Dear Microsoft: nobody -- absolutely nobody -- wants to use Edge to open pdfs. Stop. Just stop.
@Popehat Nobody wants Edge to even start. I'm planning to write a little script to kill msedge.exe every time it starts.
@Ciantic @Popehat Mostly yes, but I have found sites that I need to use that only work on Edge, much to my chagrin.
@Popehat
I use Chrome to look at PDFs but I think you could have stopped at "Edge"
@Popehat To be fair, I don’t think anybody wants to use Acrobat Reader to do it either.
@johncarneyau @Popehat t
True. That thing has more bugs than the test lab at a pest control facility.
@johncarneyau @Popehat What do you use instead? I use foxit.
@ChrispyCritter @Popehat I’m on macOS, so mostly I use the Preview app
@johncarneyau @Popehat Foxit PDF just as goid and cheaper.

@Popehat My 'Other' likes Edge PDF because you can edit/draw in it without needing to pay for some other tool. Great for grading and annotations.

I like it so I don't have to install some Reader that doesn't patch PDF security issues fast enough.

There should be option to turn off Edge auto-opening PDF, when preferred.

#pdf #edge

@ShrikeTron @Popehat you can draw in it? Does that include filling out forms? Huh. That could actually be useful.

@ShrikeTron @Popehat Came here to say exactly this. The best free PDF reader and editor with rapid security patches, and multiple layers of heavy sandboxing.

Edge hijacking PDF viewing actually decreases headaches for everyone. Users and security teams alike.

@Popehat the real question is why do you want to use Microsoft Windows? There are so many open source alternatives today! Many different Linux flavours available out there, today so easy to install.
With a large selection of browsers.
And with Open/Libre/Star-Office to edit your PDF's! @ShrikeTron
@Popehat Absolutely. That's what Chrome is for.
@Popehat that's not true, Adobe does. So that you are reminded to buy Acrobat Pro
@Popehat @tehjessica I use Chrome, and last time I got a PDF it saved the file and let me open it in my preferred default app in Windows.
@kev @Popehat I use Opera GX. The only time PDFs try to open in anything but Adobe is when Windows glitches out on me and changes the default to Edge. It's annoying!
@tehjessica @Popehat Yeah and sometimes certain apps change the default type without asking when they're installed.
@Popehat
The absolute weirdest thing about it is that when you open a PDF in Edge (from the File Explorer), Edge *doesn't* become the active window. The PDF is open, you can read it ... but first you have to make the effort to switch to Edge. Nothing else works that way, any other time you open a file you will be switched to the program that opened the file.
When it comes down to it, I don't want to use Edge for anything.

@Popehat OMG, I just encountered this setting up a new Windows laptop for my godmother today. Yes, please open in Adobe Reader.

TBH I think this comes from Google Chrome, which wants to be the only app used on my Macs and would love to be used to view PDFs.

@Popehat I don't care whether it's Edge or Chrome or what, but anything that saves me from having to download an Adobe product is ok in my book, frankly.
@Popehat Or for anything. I'd just remove it, if they let me

@Popehat I pay for Acrobat Pro, so I'm always thrilled when Chrome and Edge take over and render my monthly payment almost useless. And I'm positively bubbling over with glee when I need to correct the PDF associations on my coworker's computers with every single major Windows update.

I stay cheerful by sticking another pushpin in one of the tech CEO voodoo dolls I keep in my desk.

@Popehat that sentence was three words too long
@Popehat TBF I meet a lot of people who do not understand how much they don't want that. (See also 'Safari to open PDFs.')
@Popehat meh, Edge is totally fine, certainly better for read-only use than the free Adobe Reader. Chrome is a bit better, sure. but Edge doesn’t suck like it did the first few years. and Adobe Reader isn’t lightweight and pleasant like it was 15+ years ago
@Popehat I work at a hospital and we all use adobe professional (20 of us in my team) and I am constantly changing their settings in "open as" to open in the right program instead of Edge- really annoying.
@Popehat Nobody wants to use Edge period
@spangborn I use it when streaming sites don't like FireFox, and even then, grudgingly. I hate Edge.
@Popehat You had me at 'nobody want to use Edge'
@Popehat I would argue that the period could have gone after the word edge. Delete the next 3 words. Everything else looks fine.
@Popehat I can do nothing with PDFs in edge. If I want to convert images from the USPTO to text I have to save the file and open it in Acrobat to do the conversion so I can copy the text out.
@Popehat Does anyone want to use Edge to do anything?
@Popehat Dear Microsoft: nobody -- absolutely nobody -- wants to use Edge. Stop. Just stop.
@Popehat idk I think it's a much better pdf viewer than adobe or (sadly) firefox
@Popehat You should've stopped after Edge. 'to open pdfs' is irrelevant.
@Popehat Don't mind me, just choosing violence.
@Popehat What do you use to open PDFs on Windows? I use Preview on my Mac but refuse to install Adobe software on any platform after their security debacles on the Mac version. I don't trust the company to know what's right or wrong any more.
@Popehat
I do frequently for a quick peek and a light edit. For anything more in depth I'd fire up Acrobat Pro.
@Popehat I don't know, man. I Bing'd it the other day...
@Popehat actually, edge does a pretty good job with their PDF viewer, runs lighter than acrobat and has quick and easy editing. Literally the only reason why I haven't uninstalled edge tbh
@Popehat That operating system is best which interrupts the least.
@Popehat That’s right, we want to use Chrome!
@Popehat I used to have to fix this on all my colleagues’ work computers because no one understood how to stop it
@Popehat also to microsoft (and google) commas in filenames are not a security issue
@Popehat easy solution. Use Mac.
@Popehat well actually I do. On my work machine where it is a choice between edge and adobe, are you seriously telling me you’d choose adobe?

@Popehat

This would have also worked:

"Dear Microsoft: nobody -- absolutely nobody -- wants to use Edge."

@Popehat
I do. It offers more functionality than Chrome does and I have no desire to install Adobe Reader.

If it annoys you that much, simply change the default app for PDFs, it takes seconds to do.
