Mastodon culture seems pretty anxious about infectious disease and pretty relaxed about where AI is going.

I’m the inverse so that makes me a Mastodon contrarian. (Actually I’m not that relaxed about ID, just used to it.)

It's kinda wild that the causal chain to where AI is today was *already* strongly dependent on John Carmack, 3 decades before he started intentionally working on AI.

If the humans in Terminator wanted to go back in time to prevent skynet, they'd try to make Quake a commercial failure.

never quite understood why “WE are all in a simulation” seemed parsimonious to anyone. if the rest of reality is simulated, why would the other people in it be any different? WYSIWYG and full solipsism both make a lot more sense

An actual instance of voter fraud! It shows how dumb voter fraud is as a crime too. Even 23 votes, which is pretty prolific for this type of crime, is very rarely going to make a difference, especially in right-wing Woodbury county.

It's hard to make enough fraudulent votes to matter in an election. Systematic disenfranchisement though...

Wife of Iowa Republican accused of casting 23 fraudulent votes

She was charged with 26 counts of providing false information in registering and voting, three of fraudulent registration, and 23 of fraudulent voting.

The protection of U.S. psyops is a real story; some of the COVID stuff is a real story. But it’s so buried in horseshit—some that seems misleading by dint of ignorance, some so calculated it has to be deliberately dishonest—that what IS newsworthy has ended up getting lost.
we kind of knew all along, but it’s still kind of amazing how well 2 1/2 fricken years ago works as a period for a period piece
