🧵I had managed to avoid #SpaceKaren ā€˜s wrecking of #Twitter by using #Twitterrific. No ads, no algorithm, sorted the way I want…it was a pleasant experience that I had enjoyed for 12+ years. It synced beautifully between my Mac and #ios devices and was just a joy to use and was happy to pay for. Quite honestly it was the reason I still used Twitter at all even though I love #Mastodon more and more every day. But now that they purposely killed the API for 3rd party apps, all that joy is gone

Maybe this is a feeling that others went through at first when they left the official Twitter app but I’m feeling seriously disconnected (in good and bad ways) from the web without it. I’ve tried to replicate it through a friends recommendation of using #rss to read my feed via #netnewswire, but it’s just not the same. And it really pisses me off that someone, on a stupid whim, could just wreck something I really enjoyed 2/
I fully understand how little all this matters in the world with so much going on, but I guess I just feel really hurt. For myself, yeah, but also for all those like me and especially the devs who worked SO HARD and built their lives and companies around these apps. It’s just so stupidly not fair. Would I pay Twitter for access to these apps again? Probably, and I doubt I’m alone in that too. ā€œUse other apps - $5 a monthā€ . Sign. Me. Up. 3/

So many things from Twitter came from 3rd party apps - the term ā€œtweetā€, quote replies, a decent UI…funding these devs development helped make Twitter better for everyone and fostered innovation. #tweetbot , #Twitterrific and others improved the experience. Did it cost Twitter money? Yeah but it also brought in and kept users like me who appreciate those things like a good UI.

Maybe that’s the stupidest part of those whole thing. There was no attempt at a middle ground

If #SpaceKaren hadn’t rushed to break things and just took a breath, users like me might have stuck around. And maybe he will at some point.

But I’ll be long gone by then, happily giving my money and time to support devs like those behind #toot and #ivory (and hopefully a #Mastodon client by Icon FactoryšŸ¤ž) because at least then I’ll know that my support of a good app on a good system like the #fediverse is going to good use.

@hotsauce A great thread. Feel pretty much the same. It was my go to social media several times a day. As much as i’m enjoying mastodon, there are still sites i follow on twitter that haven’t migrated over to here.
As you say, not first world problems but after using it and getting enjoyment out of it for many years, it is pretty sad how it’s gone to shit so fast!
@hotsauce absolutely everything you just said. 100%.
@hotsauce It really does feel like we are all casualties in the midst of a billionaire funded culture war where there really isn't any middle ground.
@hotsauce A toll system to access freedom doesn’t seems fair for me. They had a system that worked for years and reduce loose at any cost, Is a bad idea. Humans are moved by the experience, the sentiment or feeling after something happens. You kill the experience and people will quit. Even something that was addictive (brain response when feed with information).
@hotsauce ā€œyou captured the way I’ve been feeling.ā€ haha, Mastodon doesn’t fix typos.

@hotsauce your posts really hit home with me. I am so angry that he just came in and quickly ripped apart what I loved about Twitter, most especially now that Twitterrific is broken. ā˜¹ļø

As for feeling disconnected, a little bit that has helped me is following Twitter handles here on Mastodon using BirdsiteLive. Just find a server here: https://fedidb.org/software/birdsitelive, click Join, type in a Twitter handle, and you can get their read-only tweets in your Mastodon timeline! Hope that helps a little 😊

@hotsauce Yes. Yes. And more yes. Exactly all of this including the weird disconnected feeling.
@hotsauce Yeah, this news upset me too as a long term 3rd party app user. It’s so awful.
@hotsauce At least Space Karen isn't using hashtags.
@hotsauce I share exactly the same feeling! On my side, I was using #tweetbot. Initially, I was open to paying #Twitter to have access to the TwitterAPI. But over the recent #SpaceKaren development, this interest faded very quickly. Happy user of #Ivory, and I’m looking forward to paying for it. Of cause, I’m a Patreon member of #Mastodon to help them and participate in my instance.
@hotsauce I loved Twitterrific so much
