Ok, Mastodon…let’s try this out.
I’m still gonna stick around over on Twitter until the bitter end, but I want to try to get this new world figured out in the meantime!
Any tips…?

@JeriLRyan You seem to have improperly entered HTML code into your twitter bio to point here:
"rel="me" href="https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan""
Won't work.
Best just to leave it as:
https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan
Then humans can figure it out, and sites such as fedifinder.glitch.me/ can migrate you over. Hope this helps!
Yep!That's the trick.
@JeriLRyan You want to find people, go to the profile of someone you know who has a following list you would trust. Start there.
Search hashtag subjects and find a few people doing awesome stuff and repost (Boost) them. This will start the process of giving you an idea of the character of Mastodon and you can start to cultivate your feed.
Good luck!

@JeriLRyan Well, I've figured out replying finally.
#'s work about the same as they did over on Twitter.
Global is the place to just see all the posts going on.
Search out specific #'s or accounts to follow in the search tab.
That's sort of my day 1 learning so far. Hopefully some veterans of the app can come and give some real tips.
Welcome! Still a bit "calm" here, but we are getting there - Elon does his best 🤡
@JeriLRyan well, meet with @guinan and subscribe to hashtags of interest. The more you interact, the more you get out of it. This place will not feed you from an algorithm.
Welcome! :)
@JeriLRyan another helpful App post:
If you want to see Mastodon at its best, strongly recommend these options: :android: Android - Use apps Tusky or Fedilab :apple_inc: iPhone/iPad - Use apps Metatext or Toot! 💻 Computers - Log in through your server's website Mastodon was designed for websites and third party apps. These are *still* the best ways to use Mastodon! (Official app exists because new people were only looking for an official app in app stores, and giving up when they didn't find one. You don't need to use it!)
I see an EDIT for posts when you click the 3 dots, not sure if there is an edit for a reply as this is my first reply ever. Back in a sec.. [edit] yes, there is an edit for replies also, Nice!
@JeriLRyan
You can post longer and more nuanced posts here. It's a more thoughtful and courteous environment.
Not as tabloidy.
Good luck.
@JeriLRyan You’re off to a good start! Main tips that come to mind:
-If you’re using an iPhone, use MetaText instead of the official Mastodon app. It’s a more twitter-like interface, and has all three timelines available.
-Timelines: Personal is people you directly follow regardless of server, local is everyone on your server, and federated is everyone on every server that is federated together.
Welcome to the Fediverse! 🖖

Hello , I'm new here too, a part of the great #TwitterMigration to #Mastodon
I was finding basic navigation a little disorienting at first, but then found a great resource to help

bookmark the link, so that it's at your fingertips when you need to look something up
I found more great resources by following & reading some of the great articles for new people put together by https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon
I suggest following them & over time checking out some of the awesome articles & other resources to be found there
bookmark them too!
There are so many great things happening here & most of it is about the people!
Welcome 🙂
I joined Twitter in 2010 and use it pretty regularly. The people I follow, my network, has taught me so much over the last 12 years. I've very sad to see go and want to thank all the people I...
@JeriLRyan so far I've found that replying to "toots" is actually encouraged here and it makes me want to cry because Twitter was so judgey about that. Label with hashtags & boost posts.
It's honestly do much more friendly. I'm glad to see you here! ❤️🖖😁
@JeriLRyan ditch the mastodon app if you downloaded on iPhone.
Download and log in using the app Metatext.
It’s faster, and more familiar.
@JeriLRyan These seems like good tips: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/109371989796293922
Might be an idea to follow @feditips ?

@JeriLRyan seems pretty straight forward and the vibe is so much friendlier.
The official mastodon app isn’t great. Metatext is very twitter like
I’m excited to have a fresh start away from the bird app. Glad to have you here!
