Ok, Mastodon…let’s try this out.

I’m still gonna stick around over on Twitter until the bitter end, but I want to try to get this new world figured out in the meantime!

Any tips…?

#startrek #sevenofnine #twitterrefugee

@JeriLRyan You seem to have improperly entered HTML code into your twitter bio to point here:
"rel="me" href="https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan""

Won't work.

Best just to leave it as:
https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan

Then humans can figure it out, and sites such as fedifinder.glitch.me/ can migrate you over. Hope this helps!

@trollboy @JeriLRyan I think that HTML should go into another site that Jeri owns, then if she includes a link to that site from her bio a green tick will appear verifying her identity

@JeriLRyan You want to find people, go to the profile of someone you know who has a following list you would trust. Start there.

Search hashtag subjects and find a few people doing awesome stuff and repost (Boost) them. This will start the process of giving you an idea of the character of Mastodon and you can start to cultivate your feed.

Good luck!

@oracleclyde People doing awesome stuff? Count me in!

Mastodon

@JeriLRyan Well, I've figured out replying finally.

#'s work about the same as they did over on Twitter.

Global is the place to just see all the posts going on.

Search out specific #'s or accounts to follow in the search tab.

That's sort of my day 1 learning so far. Hopefully some veterans of the app can come and give some real tips.

@RandomSmashGuy73 @JeriLRyan Likes communicate only to the poster and do not amplify the post. If you want it to reach more people (all those who follow you), boost it.

@JeriLRyan

Welcome! Still a bit "calm" here, but we are getting there - Elon does his best 🤡

@JeriLRyan well, meet with @guinan and subscribe to hashtags of interest. The more you interact, the more you get out of it. This place will not feed you from an algorithm.

Welcome! :)

@JeriLRyan
Same here. I need tips, too. 😅🖖🏻
Fedi.Tips 🎄 (@[email protected])

If you want to see Mastodon at its best, strongly recommend these options: :android: Android - Use apps Tusky or Fedilab :apple_inc: iPhone/iPad - Use apps Metatext or Toot! 💻 Computers - Log in through your server's website Mastodon was designed for websites and third party apps. These are *still* the best ways to use Mastodon! (Official app exists because new people were only looking for an official app in app stores, and giving up when they didn't find one. You don't need to use it!)

Mastodon 🐘
@hannu_ikonen @JeriLRyan Yes, agree. I found Feditips really useful.
@JeriLRyan following #feditips and fedi.tips in web browser helped me
@JeriLRyan Use the Metatext app if you’re on an Apple device, much easier to navigate!
@JeriLRyan One thing that comes to mind.

Like over there you can block individuals.
Here, since it's comprised of many servers, you can also block entire servers. In some cases server owners allow behavior that can go a bit far and you have the option to not see those that allow that behavior.
@JeriLRyan Just post and it will come. 😂 Field of dreams reference.
@JeriLRyan You would be welcome on any platform, but glad to see you on Mastodon! However, I've found that CounterSocial is easier to use, has easily available user guide, tips, & help, more unified, more secure (curated by an IT professional with security/privacy priorities), and I find it a bit more "folksy". I don't know about #7/9, but I think you would like it … 🖖
@JeriLRyan build it and they will come. I follower you and George Takei. 🖖🏽
@JeriLRyan Edit function would be nice

@sandiegan @JeriLRyan

I see an EDIT for posts when you click the 3 dots, not sure if there is an edit for a reply as this is my first reply ever. Back in a sec.. [edit] yes, there is an edit for replies also, Nice!

@JeriLRyan
You can post longer and more nuanced posts here. It's a more thoughtful and courteous environment.

Not as tabloidy.

Good luck.

@JeriLRyan You’re off to a good start! Main tips that come to mind:

-If you’re using an iPhone, use MetaText instead of the official Mastodon app. It’s a more twitter-like interface, and has all three timelines available.

-Timelines: Personal is people you directly follow regardless of server, local is everyone on your server, and federated is everyone on every server that is federated together.

Welcome to the Fediverse! 🖖

@JeriLRyan Just as confused as you are. I’m hoping more Trek nerds come over here though!

@JeriLRyan I’m so happy you’re here! Please convince your fellow actors to join you. 🥰
@JeriLRyan I wrote a blog on my efforts to find and setup a mastodon account that has some references that you might find useful. https://bit.ly/3NN9XhW

I joined Twitter in 2010 and use it pretty regularly. The people I follow, my network, has taught me so much over the last 12 years. I've very sad to see go and want to thank all the people I...

@JeriLRyan so far I've found that replying to "toots" is actually encouraged here and it makes me want to cry because Twitter was so judgey about that. Label with hashtags & boost posts.

It's honestly do much more friendly. I'm glad to see you here! ❤️🖖😁

@JeriLRyan ditch the mastodon app if you downloaded on iPhone.

Download and log in using the app Metatext.

It’s faster, and more familiar.

@JeriLRyan check out @feditips! They’ve got lots of useful info for getting started. And follow @Gargron who created Mastodon, he often shares useful stuff too!
@JeriLRyan welcome! I'm still figuring it out myself 😅

@JeriLRyan These seems like good tips: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/109371989796293922

Might be an idea to follow @feditips ?

@JeriLRyan Given your profile, I can imagine you might get a lot of unwanted messages directed at you. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/ might be helpful.

@JeriLRyan seems pretty straight forward and the vibe is so much friendlier.
The official mastodon app isn’t great. Metatext is very twitter like

I’m excited to have a fresh start away from the bird app. Glad to have you here!

@JeriLRyan
P.S. A very busy site with a huge influx of users including #TwitterRefugee -s. Plenty of #StarTrek fans there and a very large numbers of folks that follow the same #Politics as you do. And very supportive for new users. You can check it out here: https://counter.social/index.html

@JeriLRyan Remember to follow hashtags just like you would people. That way, you will receive posts from people you don't normally follow, but are still relevant to your interests. Welcome to the #Fediverse! 🙂 👍
@JeriLRyan so far Mastodon seems a nicer, less bot filled space. Hope that won't change. Welcome 🖖 Peace and long life
@JeriLRyan I've only just signed up, and I'm so confused!
@foreveranensign @JeriLRyan Don’t worry it took a little while to get the hang of it.
@JeriLRyan Great to see you here 🖖🏼 I just try to digger out how to delete my twitter account.
@JeriLRyan Good to see you here Jeri!
@JeriLRyan we’re all doing the same. But the more Musk messes up Twitter, the more we’ll spend time here.
@toliro @JeriLRyan
@JeriLRyan Anyone else having issues viewing pics and gifs? I have set always show media and autoplay gifs, but still only some seem to show.
@JeriLRyan I guess I'd say be patient as the sites upgrade their capacities to handle the influx of new users.
@JeriLRyan
No particular tips, but I have faith that, as a fellow GenX, you'll figure it out.
@JeriLRyan I moved here over because of you. I have been a fan for a long time as you present yourself as a woman of substance. Take Care.
@JeriLRyan use hashtags in your messages. The mastodon wide search works good with #hashtags. And welcome here 👍
@JeriLRyan all images here usually contain “alt-text,” or at least that is the expectation. Doing it is a good way of showing care to the community here.
@JeriLRyan None so far (this is my first Mast? Todon?) but nice to see you.
@JeriLRyan welcome over here Jeri! 🖖🏼😘
@JeriLRyan follow and boost and see my pinned toots for tips 👌😊😍🤸‍♂️
@JeriLRyan great to see you here, my other half and I have been fans for years.
@JeriLRyan Followed you here from Twitter
