#UnboxingProductivity

Hello friends! For convoluted and slightly boring reasons I received a bunch of non-valuable 1990s Star Trek action figures in their boxes semi-recently and they've been sitting waiting for a good use. And now I have one!

1/

#UnboxingProductivity

See, my brain is weird and not well-attuned to long term rewards, which is why I'm drawn to researching and writing detailed Reddit comments about law for 6 upvotes instead of doing the exact same thing for, well, money.

Because upvotes are now and "tangible" while money is later and abstract.

But you know what else is now and tangible and produces neurochemical rewards? Opening a box with a toy in it!

#UnboxingProductivity

Every day I complete a personal goal I'm going to open one of these dudes, and I want to bring you along with the magic of LiveTooting.

With a cute hashtag for your muting or following needs!

But I'm going to start by YesterdayTooting our first escapee, Generations Dr. Beverley Crusher.

First out of the box: kind of slick looking poster, though I will tell you I have never felt flimsier paper.

Here she is fully equipped with a medical tricorder, medkit, a phaser demonstrating her truly, truly terrible fire discipline and....

Is that a thermos?

No, it has to be, like, a "away team thermal regulated sample kit, right?"

4/

Lol nope it's just a Thermos. Like, with the TM and everything (does that imply that in the future with no property they still have...intellectual property? How do you meet the "use in commerce requirement" in a world without commerce! #IP #Jokes #IPJokes)

Ok it's a Starfleet Thermos. Used on away missions to hold liquid refreshments.

I would have liked a reference to Space Soup but overall thumbs up.

#UnboxingProductivity

Ok I'm going to risk overloading the dopamine receptors by cracking tonight's well-earned little plastic buddy.

Not going to lie, this is pretty close to the bottom of the barrel in terms of characters I'm psyched to own an action figure of. I can think of at least two other Malcolm McDowell characters I'd prefer action figures of.

#UnboxingProductivity

OOH but in Generations Evil Malcolm McDowell But Not The Cool OneAnd Also Not The Other Cool One has a speech about how time is a predator waiting to strike

Then Picard has a speech at the end about how time is a good friend that eventually comes to join us

I honestly think an important message our society is missing is "death is inevitable and denying that is a sickness"

So maybe Generations is Good Actually?

Anyway lol they gave him a watch because fuck him.

#UnboxingProductivity

As the box says "Hailing All Collectors! individually numbered figures."

Anyone got Dr. Soren nos. 037509 or 037507? We can be friends!

Also I feel like that 6th digit there was pretty optimistic on the part of the Playmates company re: the demand for this stubly old dude.

/8

#UnboxingProductivity

Oh, but wait, what was that thing in his hand? Looks like a legally-distinct sonic screwdriver?

/9

#UnboxingProductivity

I'm sorry, "multi range light source?"

So this random rod bullshit gets a space-y ass name for a *flashlight* even though it it no way resembles a flashlight. Is it like a light bulb on a stick?

At least the pocketwatch is just pocketwatch.

10/

#UnboxingProductivity

Anyway thank you for joining me on this Journey Into The Nexus...of FUN!

I'll return to this thread tomorrow...or never, depending on how the whole meeting-goals thing goes!

Also, I want to say it made me very happy to see that when I #MalcolmMcDowell it said "1 per week" meaning I'm not the only one in this corner of the #Fediverse tooting about our pal McDowell.

11/

#UnboxingProductivity

I met goals again today so guess what we get to do!

Meet Data's dad! AKA one of Bret Spiner's contractually-obligated non-robot performances.

Another kind of bottom of the pile figure (I should say, the ones I'm most excited about are not main chars either--I have a very idiosyncratic set of faves. I'm working up to the exciting ones.)

12/

#StarTrek #toys #ScienceFiction #BrettSpiner

#UnboxingProductivity

Any #DS9 trivia buffs know if anyone actually won an appearance on the show from this and if so, what episode(s)? That would be fun to know.

Also: if the #TNG figure wasn't enough to date this to the early mid 90s, it comes with a motherfuckin *POG*

13/

#UnboxingProductivity

I find it hilarious that they bother to give him articulated knees and a rigid jacket that gives him this range of motion

14/

#UnboxingProductivity

And his accessories include...a smaller, cheaper action figure!

We are told it is a "Human Motion Simulacrum" which is ironic because it it notable for *not* moving, even as much as Dr. Soong himself can.

I'm not going to make you guess what they called his Science Hooka or his water pick, because the answers are boring (Crystalline Test Tube--sort of insensitive given the Crystalline Entity that destroyed his home or whatever--and Sub-Processor Surgical Tool)

15/

#UnboxingProductivity

Honestly, together these two look ready for some Shakespeare or something, honesty as Brett Spiner and Malcolm McDowell Do An Off-Broadway Play action figures I'm even more into them.

That's about it for tonight! I hope you also productively earned your dopamine today.

If you enjoy these threads you are welcome to play along at home and *only* look at them if you meet some measurable goal in the day!

16/

#UnboxingProductivity

Are you excited? Are you waiting to see if I met goals today?

Well...I DID! Not sure the last time that happened 4 days straight but it's been a minute, so this thing seems to be working.

And here's a fun one.

DEEP SPACE NINE RIKER

#StarTrek #toys #DS9 #TNG #Riker

17/

#UnboxingProductivity

"But wait!" Say people who are very nerdy but not quite nerdy enough. "Riker never showed up on Deep Space Nine!"

And those people are sorta right. Commander *Will* Riker never showed up on Deep Space Nine.

But Lieutenant *Thomas* Riker did!

18/

#UnboxingProductivity

As a character study in meeting ones prior self or whatever there was an TNG episode where they found out Riker had beamed back from an away mission once. And also Riker had gotten stuck on the planet. Oops! Two Rikers!

Eventually the character stuff was resolved and Lt. Riker took their shared middle name Thomas and went off to be a productive Starfleet member.

UNTIL HE WASN'T

Because who better to show up on DS9 (SPOILER) as a MAQUIS INSURGENT than ol' Tom

19/

#UnboxingProductivity

I'm really missing the Space Thermos because this stuff is kinda boring space nonsense that he can't even hold--even the phaser. Other than the Deep Space Nine Monitor which I can only assume is a tv that only plays DS9 aka the perfect TV.

#StarTrek #DS9

/20

#UnboxingProductivity

That's about all to share pictures-wise.

As a DS9 fan having a very minor TNG character who conveniently resembles a popular TNG character as a DS9 figure as opposed to something DS9-specific is mildly disappointing, especially since the number of DS9 figures overall is kinda limited.

But then again I get that a Riker--even Thomas is prolly both easier to make and was more likely to sell in the 90s than overloooked guys like Weyoun or Martok

And he's fun!

21/

#UnboxingProductivity

WHEW!

Well, day five in a row was a lot more of a grind but we just barely got there on goals.

And today's open is a special treat because we finally have someone who isn't human!

Friends, we have a KLINGON

#StarTrek #TNG #Klingons #toys #nostalgia

22/

#UnboxingProductivity

Well, a half-Klingon!

I admit I had to look at the STARFLEET PERSONEL RECORD DATA BASE PRINTOUT to remind myself exactly who she was, but I somewhat remembered this is Worf's, uh, co-parent?

(That's being kinda generous to Worf's level of parental care/responsibility for Alexander)

I kinda remember one episode with her but as you may have guessed from yesterday, my on command DS9 knowledge is a lot better than my TNG.

23/

#UnboxingProductivity

The figure RULES, though.

Turns out the Klingons are a little better for fun toy accessories than the Federation.

It's an ACTION figure, not a science/exploration/diplomacy figure.

The mask makes her look like Jason I guess but that's still cool. The sword was hard to get in her hand but once there sticks. The Klingon symbol base was also hard to connect but looks great.

Real happy with this one.

24/

#UnboxingProductivity

The back of her trading card does mention she had a Klingon father and Human mother.

Klingon/Human romance is a real potential fertile ground for fiction. Notably Lois McMaster Bujold's long and wonderful Vorkosigan series started as a bit of an idea about such a romance, which shows in the early part of Shards of Honor.

Contrary to rumor it was apparently never written as a fanfic but the influence is still there.

Woo hit goal! Barely, again, due to a very slow Monday getting moving.

For that reason I'm going to very quickly share this *excellent* Borg figure in max picture minimum toot.

Switchable arms!

This guy is not just going to sit on my desk, he's coming home to fight a Klingon diplomat.

Probably won't have any unboxing tomorrow due to errands that will keep me below goal but let's see how Weds goes!

@ConnorMoran I can't believe it took me this long to discover this thread. I wish you much productivity and look forward to more unboxings!
