Update: I was fired. I loved working at ORNL's Climate Change Science Institute and am devastated, but am also more determined and hopeful than ever. We have incredible power to affect change together.🌱

I still plan to continue with both research & activism, to the extent possible.

To my wonderful colleagues: My temporary affiliation is LSCE. Please use my personal rather than my work email, which I no longer have access to. Thank you for all of the support so far ♥️

@ultracricket Really sorry to hear that, and hope that you are able to find an employer that supports all aspects of your work.
@ckoven Thank you Charlie. I'm cautiously optimistic.
@ultracricket so sorry to hear that. Thank you for everything you’re doing. 💚
@ultracricket so sorry to hear rose. I know you will be needed elsewhere. Best of luck to you.

@ultracricket

Shameful that they fired you. I'm so sorry!

A big hug from New Hampshire!

Would you be comfortable sharing the text of this outside of NYT? I can't read it past their subscription popup prompt.

@FluffyCowBird @ultracricket I suggest using lynx or a similar no-script browser. Worked well, minus the tracking annoyances.

@mierk @ultracricket
Thank you, Mierk! This is a sad but inspiring example.

And thank you, Rose, for your efforts, and for writing so eloquently about how your work itself led you to this point. I wish you the very best as you move forward.

On the bright side, your and Peter's courageous act has brought a lot of attention to this disconnect between the findings of scientists and the utter lack of a corresponding policy response which any rational person would expect as a result. I know I don't need to tell you this, but keep on fighting the good fight! You are not alone!

@FluffyCowBird @ultracricket If you click the 'reader view' button on that page as soon as it appears you can read it all, and without all the other distractions NYT adds ;)
@ultracricket So sorry to hear this!! Thanks for your bravery and your work.

@ultracricket

Hard to leave and be forced to decide career and ethics. But wherever you are, if those around you aren't supporting you, then time for the shackles to come off.

I hope in uncertain times ahead you can find the grounding to take stock, refocus and move forward in good heart with your worthwhile endeavours.

@ultracricket Wow, that's really terrible!

DOE should really have a #ScientificIntegrity policy that clearly allows scientists to speak their minds on issues of importance (so long as they make it clear they are not representing the agency...)

@ultracricket

FWIW "Covered personnel are free to share personal views and opinions on scientific or technical related policy matters, provided they do not attribute these views to the U.S. Government. This includes scientific or a public forums, communications with the media, and publishing research finding."

@ultracricket I just read your letter this morning. I am sorry you were fired. I'm wishing your power and passion.

@ultracricket Ooof, that final graph also resonates for me. My social and professional life is forever changed in the wake of my personal MeToo blog post.

"I did not make the decision to become an activist lightly; I recognized that my actions would have consequences, and I knew that I could face retaliation. But inaction during this critical time will have far greater consequences."

Thank you for your service to the larger good, and I'm sorry. The personal aftereffects can suck. 😥

@ultracricket This gross injustice is a sign of the power of your voice.
Sadly not surprised that the AGU is trying to censure you.

@ultracricket @climatebrad if I see an Exxon, Chevron or other fossil fuel corporate branding at next #AGU, I’m throwing soup. Political speech can not be a matter of pay to play in the #AGU.
@nathanpboston @ultracricket AGU has quietly divested its holdings from the fossil-fuel industry - unclear what its current policy on sponsorships is. http://www.hillheat.com/articles/2023/01/11/agu-quietly-began-divesting-from-fossil-fuel-industry-in-2021
Hill Heat : AGU Quietly Began Divesting From Fossil-Fuel Industry in 2021

After years of protests from its climate-scientist members for its ties to climate polluters, the American Geophysical Union quietly divested its $100-million-plus investment portfolio from the fossil-fuel industry. In November 2021, AGU leadership posted

@climatebrad @ultracricket thanks for the update. Last I heard, Exxon, not AGU, made the decision to stop buying the student breakfast. Your new research here shows more progress but that we need to keep an eye on them.
@nathanpboston @ultracricket yes my piece goes into the breakfast and how Chevron was a Fall Meeting sponsor for a few more years

@ultracricket I’m so sorry this happened.

Some of my favorite scientists are at LSCE. In my sub specialty anyhow they’ve been stacked with awesome women scientists my whole career.

Best wishes to you there.

@ultracricket

That truly sucks.

I'm sure that you'll continue to stand by your beliefs.

There are other more welcoming avenues out there.

Just a shame that those who fired you couldn't appreciate you.

@ultracricket The AGU has a major conflict of interest here, with a large and powerful subset of their membership working directly in, or indirectly supporting, extractive and polluting industries.
@ultracricket I hope you find a better place soon. Solidarity.
@ultracricket all the #scifi movies and books where the world bands together to take on an existential threat and SAVE HUMANITY ring hollow these days.
@ultracricket It is absolutely outrageous that you were fired! So disappointed in ORNL. Thank you for all the work that you're doing.

@ultracricket
Sending all my support as a fellow scientist and whole person. Timid or captured admins thought they could silence you but platformed you instead.

As an #AGU member, I’m planning to go in person next year and escalate peaceful political speech, in solidarity with your brave and principled action.

@ultracricket
This is a shocking story. I can't believe ORNL fired you for peacefully voicing your opinion! I assume that US labs are as quick at hiring as they are at firing, but it is still incomprehensible to me how this can happen. Good luck and I look forward to reading your next papers under an affiliation that is more deserving.

@ultracricket

:-(

I'm an #agu member - how can I help people in your position?

@ultracricket You’re an inspiration. And your ex-employers should be ashamed of themselves.

💕

@ultracricket My upmost support and solidarity. Your protest was right and courageous, and it is deeply shocking and wrong that you lost your job for it. It was no doubt done to send a strong signal - but what a signal. And so sorry that you are having to personally suffer for jt. Are there any ways you can legally challenge your dismissal? If you won that would be hugely important signal and victory too. So many battles to fight
@pvonhellermannn @ultracricket I just wish to echo what Pauline said. Sorry to see this and thank you for what you're doing!

@ultracricket

You are a scientist in a society increasingly populated by science deniers and other similar idiots. You are, by definition, an activist in that you put thought into actions.

I was an activist in the seventies, thinking green and living it. Now I'm just trying to keep my health and understand love. My daughter strives to make sense of the biomass and maintain herself as a human being and a medical professional.

@ultracricket hoping this is not where you just got fired from, I came across this recently on my timeline:

@ultracricket saw your action in videos, am impressed by your strength, and disgusted by ORNL. all the best in the coming times!
@ultracricket
So sorry to hear that, for loosing your job and about the attitude of the institution you used work.
I can not understand why nowadays still this resistance against the facts related with the very bad situation of our environment and what could be even worst, punish people that tries to alert others about this truth.

@ultracricket I’m so sorry. Getting fired can be devestating. To have it happen because you spoke truths must make this particularly difficult.

Keep up the fight.

@ultracricket Thank you for your work and activism. ❤️ You are a light in this world, keep shining!
