It's the beginning of 2023 and I'm absolutely determined to get a job. Please help me with this however you can! I'm doing what I can on my end, but recommendations/referrals do help a lot and I'm really trying to make a big push to snag *something* since we really need it over here. (found family of four in a two bedroom apartment)

- Comp sci degree
- 1.5 years as a software test engineer
- Python and NodeJS are my relevant languages, but I'm a fast learner and know a few others as well
- Same field, web dev, or sysadmin stuff is right up my alley
- Looking for remote, but can commute (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, USA)
- I'm a trans woman, so clear acceptance/queer coworkers are a huge plus

Entry level would be best, I don't have enough work experience for most places to look at me mid-level. DM for a resume or any questions, take a look at my site for some examples of things I do!

Alice Werefox

A 29 year old dragon with she/it pronounsComp. sci. grad in Minneapolis, MN. I mostly do full-stack and dev-ops related stuff, mainly with Python, Rust, and JavaScript. E-mail or DM me for a full resume if needed. Otherwise, please check out the stuff I do!

It's been a few days and I've gotten some really good suggestions and referrals so far. Thank y'all so so much for doing what you can, even if that's just boosting it really does help. I've noticed quite a few of y'all have also sent in follow requests and I deeply appreciate that as well! I hope those of you that I accept stay with me for a while on this journey in my little corner of the Internet.

I'll try to make future replies here about any updates regarding this, but since it's only been a few days I haven't heard anything back just yet. I just thought I'd show my gratitude for now.

@werefox which area are you in? Country-level is enough
@littlefox "twin cities" area is Minnesota, USA
@werefox I sadly don't think we hire there, being a mostly Austria and Germany company - we have locations in US, but probably just have ops people there, not devs :/
@littlefox That's okay, thank you for doing what you can!

@werefox

#HachyJobs for anyone following the tag

@werefox Just a comment suggesting you note your location (country, at the very least!)... there's nothing in your bio. No need to write back to me with this info (as often happens when I suggest a location is needed, sigh)... it needs to be in your bio, or in the actual toot, to be useful to you. Good luck.

@sister_ratched "twin cities" is fairly universal in the states to mean Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. I do reference that in the post.

Regardless, it's a good point and the second time someone has asked where I'm at so I'll just give the post an edit to be more clear.

@werefox 'twin cities' is meaningless to anyone outside the USA. It would help those elsewhere if they could narrow it down a bit! Just a simple courtesy. 🙏 😃
@sister_ratched Ye ye, no worries, I got ya. Went ahead and edited the post.
@werefox
Alice, do you have any certifications from PMI or Scaled Agile? Not cheap, but definitely sets you apart from the crowd.
@HandgunYoga Unfortunately, no. However, we did use scaled agile framework on one of the projects I was the most involved in at my previous employment, so I am familiar with it.
@werefox Try Indeed. Seeking help here is probably not going to get you anywhere.
@scifier2 it's gotten me a few interviews so far. I wouldn't be so quick to doubt what folks on fedi are capable of.
@werefox send me a resume. What’s your background with Kubernetes and Docker?
@werefox If my current employer used Python and NodeJS I'd say come work for us, but I think the main stuff we work with is coded in a C variant and we need more SQL experts than anything else.
@callielaren that's fair, thank you for considering it! Even the boosts help tbh. Wish I were more of a SQL expert, but I'd call myself more of an amateur at best.
@werefox I was just getting comfortable with SQL when I quit the job where I used it most, trying to get a refresher on it for this job. Best of luck with the search, if I can find a remote job with my horrible luck, you'll definitely do even better!

@callielaren thank you so much!

I'm super hopeful still! Something will definitely pop up eventually, I've already had a few interviews and I'm kinda waiting to see how a couple ones shake out, but yeah. I'm sure I'll get something, just gotta keep at it.

@werefox If you want something small while searching this person looks like they have a little but on-going project that fits your skills (if I'm reading the skills right, I am in no way, shape, or form a programmer): https://twipped.social/@twipped/109617787477596429

BOOSTS REQUESTED. I need folks who can help maintain the Gender Dysphoria Bible. There are a number of maintenance tasks that are long over due, including integrating the spanish translation and upgrading the site builder to run in Node 16/18. Month after month I cannot find the executive function to tackle them, and I feel like I’m letting down my Patreon supporters. If there’s anyone with the needed nodejs experience who can help, I’ll pay you out of my funding. #transgender #trans #gdb

@SRLevine I did notice that post! It's a bit more complex than I'd be used to, but I did consider it's something I could probably tackle if I put a bunch of spoons into it. Don't think it would be paid, though. Regardless, I have had it one my mind.
@werefox The person did mention that some money would come out of the patreon for the programmer, but that's the sort of situation that can get dicey I guess.
Good luck (sorry I can't be more help, if you magically turn into a bio-informatics person who knows R and/or someone who knows image analysis software I know of at least one opening).
@SRLevine gotcha! Hahaha, no worries! Boosting helps a lot! Getting more eyes is more than enough.

@werefox Alice are you willing to learn Go? Are you comfortable doing server / systems engineering?

Things I couldn't easily find on your website: what country are you in? List of projects or things that demonstrate what you can do or your own interests/ drive, i.e examples of code you've written to solve your own problems.

@werefox I've gone and used my personal profile, but if you're interested DM me and I'll share the professional one. Happy to give tips if you wish, i.e resume review. I am a hiring manager in tech and I do have open roles.
@werefox @ljwrites
Would suggest the grad schemes at big banks. They have excellent inclusivity policies and they pay well, even at the grass level.
@werefox Fingers crossed that the right people see this and snap you up into the best fitting job situation.

Ever consider a large insurer like BCBS, UHC, etc? They are IT driven and constantly evolving AI.
@werefox Check with your college alumni association for any career supports (networking events, job fairs, resume writing, etc). Your local Workforce Development Center can be a good resource, too. I second looking at major insurance companies for tech jobs. Also consider hotel chains and banks (many are more LGBTQ+ friendly than in the past). Wishing you all best!
@SuprmomcatCathy thank you, I'll try taking a look there. Unfortunately for me my alma mater is in Texas, quite a plane ride away, and I have doubts they'd be very receptive to me these days. (I will do it, but I still have yet to confirm whether they actually even changed my name in their records) That's not a bad suggestion, though, otherwise. I know they do host regular job and career fairs and they're typically one of the bigger ones around.
@werefox You’re very welcome! They may offer some remote services/events? Or if they’re big enough have events in other states? And it sucks to have to double check they updated your records. Good luck!
@werefox If you're open to working in VFX/Entertainment software development, Technicolor occasionally has junior positions open up and I would keep an eye on our LI page (https://www.linkedin.com/company/technicolorcreativestudios/). If you're on LinkedIn, feel free to connect w/ me (link in profile) and let me know if you apply to anything with us
@werefox Boosted. Good luck with your search, Alice 🙂
@werefox send me resume. I have some contacts [email protected]
@kristophr gotcha, I'm a little hesitant to blindly send my resume to folks just due to privacy and safety concerns. Regardless, I will send something out shortly, I've been kinda going through these replies in batches as I have time so today's one of those days.
@werefox I just landed a gig myself. Best of luck landing gig.
@werefox @isaiah Alice, we are always looking for talented folks. We may, or may not, have remote gigs right now but I always encourage folks to give us a look. https://willowtreeapps.com/careers

@werefox My company is still hiring despite the tech downturn! R&D: Grafana is probably closer to your skills but also check out Cloud: https://boards.greenhouse.io/grafanalabs/jobs/4589290004
Software Engineer, Cloud Database(Americas Remote)

United States (Remote)

@huxley oh! This is actually pretty doable to me, honestly. I've not used Grafana too much in the past, but did use it some. I think this is actually a decent one to reflect a lot of my skills from just personal projects and such, aside from the Python experience.
@werefox I hadn't used it at all and they hired me, so...
@huxley hahaha, fair enough! Yeah I used it for a personal project a while back when I was trying to find a way to monitor a few pis and different systems. I haven't used kubernetes because I don't really have enough machines for that to be worth it for what I do personally, but distributed microservices and containers and systems engineering? That's not super new to me haha

@werefox I had also never used kubernetes. (I was coming from Google so my experience was orthogonal). Like any decently-sized tech company there is an understanding that you'll spend ~6mo being useless and just ramping up.

If you want to apply I can drop a referral in the system. That gets you more in the door and gets me a fat bonus if we hire you
