REMEMBER: “Elon Musk admitted to his biographer that the reason the Hyperloop was announced—even tho he had no intention of pursuing it—was to try to disrupt the California high-speed rail project to get in the way of that actually succeeding.” — @parismarx in #Gizmodo

Silicon Valley's Push Into Transportation Has Been a Miserable Failure

The titans of tech brought plenty of disruption to our broken transportation system but delivered little in the way of innovation.

@BrentToderian @parismarx crazy that they would take his word for some unproven technology over well understood high speed rail, but I guess at that time he still had his veneer of competence.
@rowdypixel @BrentToderian He didn’t succeed, luckily - California HSR is being built right now.
@stephengentle @rowdypixel @BrentToderian It has been slowed down hugely and the cost has grown greatly because of an unending wave of lawsuits.

@BrentToderian @parismarx That places him in an old tradition then, of car companies sabotaging public transit.

@guidostevens Yeah, that's instantly what came to my mind.

That and Judge Doom -- the insanely evil jurist in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

Nice discussion on NZZ LinkedInpage. Referred to Elite Projection by @humantransit

@BrentToderian @parismarx
I'm pretty sure he did the same thing with High Speed Rail in Texas too
@BrentToderian @parismarx my takeaway is that our corporate overloads don't care about people, what effects their decisions have on people's lives, and they certainly don't care about what they're doing to our environment. All that matters is aquiring more wealth. Being stupendously wealthy apparently removes empathy.

@BrentToderian @parismarx What bemuses me here is why he'd want to bother? What threat does HSR pose to anything he's doing?

CA HSR will displace more short-haul flights than inter-city drives.

@BrentToderian @parismarx

Almost like all billionaires are pathologically selfish scumbags.

“Elon Musk admitted to his biographer that the reason the Hyperloop was announced—even tho he had no intention of pursuing it—was to try to disrupt the California high-speed rail project to get in the way of that actually succeeding.”

@BrentToderian @parismarx A long article but v. useful to understand how dangerous it is to only rely on "tech" to solve our problems! Never realized b4 how damaging Uber is.
@BrentToderian @parismarx Elmo is a dangerous chaos agent. Judging by his friendships, financial backers and other questionable figures, suspect he does not wish the USA well.
@BrentToderian @parismarx heh my 11yo and i scream "LAMO" whenever we see one of these Waymo self driving cars training itself on our city streets. it's the small victories.
@pete_wright @BrentToderian @parismarx like why are you training your 11 year old to unthinkingly laugh at a hard intellectual pursuit? that seems weird and unhinged even if you wish cars weren’t a thing which I generally agree with.
@pete_wright @BrentToderian @parismarx allright I guess you are just a troll. hope the kid doesn’t catch it from ya :(
@parismarx @BrentToderian @jackmott wow lay it on thick.
I was going to say that I have no qualms with people mocking libertarian tech bros who want to privatize everything they can, at the cost of livable cities and public transit, while using the same public resources they seek to privatize. And mistaking their greed for some sort of intellectual endeavor is laughable at best.

But laughing at a stranger being ignorant is easier.

👍
@BrentToderian @parismarx I read some total crazy things happening in US today, but this is really evilness.
@BrentToderian @parismarx @quinta
And so many European Musk boys went crazy for it, ridiculising me publicly when I asked critical questions after their muscular promotional talks.
@vanderbeeken @BrentToderian @parismarx eu regulators tended to believe in good faith all fakes were fed them. now they learned
@quinta @BrentToderian @parismarx Not so sure though. The latest totem of European religious tech belief is nuclear energy, and many are the target of the same attempts at ridiculisation of critical thinking. This ought to be read by all: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/15/dismantling-sellafield-epic-task-shutting-down-decomissioned-nuclear-site
Dismantling Sellafield: the epic task of shutting down a nuclear site

The long read: Nothing is produced at Sellafield anymore. But making safe what is left behind is an almost unimaginably expensive and complex task that requires us to think not on a human timescale, but a planetary one

@BrentToderian @parismarx
He's an f'ing troll. We should revoke his citizenship & deport him.
@BrentToderian @parismarx don't worry. Not going to forget that.
that high speed rail project didnt need ANY help from him to fail
@BrentToderian @parismarx Since when do we “trust” Mr Musk…..Space X seems to be the safest product he has produced….Still waiting for safe self-drive Teslas……
@BrentToderian @parismarx I have such deep distain for that man.
@BrentToderian @parismarx He's still trying to build a hyperloop prototype - this time in Texas. Coincidentally, Texas is also trying to start a high-speed rail project of its own. Perhaps if Musk can be convinced that there is no ADS-B tracking of railroad trains, he won't try to interfere with that one...
@BrentToderian @parismarx can you point me at the specific quote? the linked article is so full of spam and popus I can’t read shit on mu phone
@BrentToderian @parismarx Musk’s Hyperloop scam is an old school trick conceived by a Microsoft engineer in 1982. Vaporware. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware His trashing of public transit is an even more vintage move from Robert Moses’ playbook https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/23/cars/elon-musk-robert-moses/index.html

@BrentToderian @parismarx
I still think that was a post-hoc justification for why we made such a crap product. Musk buys the myth of his own genius - and do geniuses screw up? No! Clearly it must've been a 4d-chess move, a secret scheme to derail the thing he didn't like.
@BrentToderian @parismarx
Shouldn't he be sued for that ?
