@QasimRashid I'll never not find it crass and self-centered when people see a natural disaster causing widespread devastation and their first instinct is to jump up to make political posts taking swipes at politicians. It's crass when right-wing grifters do it and it's crass when others do it.

Karan Bass might suck but $17.5 million dollar budget cuts didn't make 100mph winds that are so fast any water dropped on the fire just disperses into a useless mist.

In whats i'm sure not be a shock to anyone, but the #fediverse is basically useless in an emergency. There was *some* slightly useful info. But the fact that search is garbage and no one has a coherent way to use hash tags makes it pretty pointless if you are trying to coordinate on a hyper-local level with normal, non tech obsessed people. its fine for other stuff, but certainly not useful when things are really chaotic and time sensitive.

bluesky is garbage too, but it did have a few useful things out there and the search was at least usable even if it was mostly just idiots spreading misinfo.

shockingly instagram seemed to provide the most useful, actionable info for me over the past several days. that and traditional media like TV.

now that the media has entered the "blame game" phase its looking like print media will be the most reliable source of info moving forward.
Just a reminder that capital doesn’t give a fuck about you. Spent this morning checking my go bag and trying to figure out likely hood of me having to evac Santa Monica, while watching internet tough guys say how easy this could have been avoided (🤦‍♂️) then I get a call from my boss say I need to get my OKRs in for his mgmt meeting today.

Like first of all fuck capatilism, but secondly fuck all you internet sleuths spreading misinformation and conjecture. Like yea I get it you’re autistic, white and have free time so of course you have a shitty take…but just sit this one out. You have no idea wtf is going on here
just put some bean soup on that'll need to cook for a few hours here in #santamonica, not sure if this will be a genius move if we loose power, or a case of me being over optimistic. fingers crossed they don't expand the evac zone into our neighborhood.

If anyone is looking for a very talented #IT engineer with a great table side manner (which is very rare IMHO) please let me know. We had to unfortunately let go a good friend of mine who would be a *major* asset to any organization. I have his CV and contact info so just DM me.

The AI bubble is the new crypto bubble: you can tell because the same people are behind it, and they're doing the same thing with AI as they did with crypto - trying desperately to find a use case to cram it into, despite the yawning indifference and outright hostility of the users:

lol - apparently Steve Guttenberg was on KTLA earlier telling people to leave their keys in their cars if they are forced to abandon them. all those Police Academy movies really paid off. 😅
holy fuck LA Fire dept has a front loader out that is pushing cars people have abandoned fleeing the Palisades fire to get them out of the way...live on the news. Hope they don't touch a tesla the wrong way and start a lithium fire 🫠

The #FreeBSD installer suggests turning off SU+J for SSDs; I suspect this is based on concerns about the quality of both SSDs and SU+J from 15+ years ago, and that the advice longer makes sense. Can anyone think of a reason to keep the advice?

Californians deserve their choice of ISPs, even if they are renters. Our friends at Media Alliance write about why #InternetChoice should be protected by law, and the fight to make it happen. https://media-alliance.org/2024/12/does-broadband-for-all-apply-to-californias-tenants-it-should/
Does “Broadband For All” Apply to California’s Tenants? It Should.
