@nixCraft So many 16+!!???
@lanius @nixCraft apparently there's a community of people who park domains as a form of investment. Buy domains people might want and sell it back at a higher price.
@nixCraft @lanius @wolfkin or, perhaps, because we aspire to do things that we don't end up having the time to manage, thus facing the annual choice of "$12 and maybe I'll do it next year?"
@purp @nixCraft @lanius nah bro, those people are fine. People who buy domains and just own them and they aren't thinking about what to do with them or maybe they are thinking about to do with them. That's an entirely different atmosphere. But I'm saying is there is a real community of people who buy domains explicitly for the purpose of reselling them at a higher value when people determine that they want the name.
@wolfkin @purp @nixCraft @lanius domain name investing is just another way to earn a living. Despite what you may have heard, there is a code of ethics for domainers. It’s frowned upon for investors to buy up a name of an established business or person. Not all domainers do that!
@wolfkin @lanius @nixCraft There are also people who buy a lot of domains with the plan of actually doing something with it some day, but never get around to that. I won't go into how I know that.
@captainchaos @wolfkin @nixCraft well, been there, done that… Now I only have two domains, and none parked / waiting for the right moment.
@nixCraft Last I checked, I had over 90. I’ve actually been letting some drop since as I review my list I can’t even remember why I bought the domain to begin with πŸ˜…
@nixCraft I was the first. I do have several that are attached to existing projects, where they have lost their real use. Some of them I do plan to cancel, others I will reuse. I have at least 6 domains that I have used for 3 or even more totally different projects :) (I do probably own between 35 and 40 domains now, which are 60% professional and 40% private projects).
@nixCraft Somewhere around 18, but most of them are misspellings of the main domain, and are forwarding everything to the main site. So I’m not sure that counts?
@nixCraft One day I will do something useful with https://scrotum.rodeo
scrotum rodeo

@guffo @nixCraft Photoshop contests? All (winning,,) entries get randomly displayed on the landing page... All ,(losing) entries spend eternity stuck in your head.

@nixCraft

The web portion is parked because I don't have a website, but I use MX and other records.

@nixCraft Dammit. My kid broke my glasses and I mis-tapped.

None. Ever. I've never bought a domain. They're a vanity exercise.

@nixCraft I was feeling really called out by this, but then I went and checked to accurately tally my shame, and it turns out I've actually culled a lot and attached a site to most of the others.
@nixCraft I used to work at a domain registrar... No comment! πŸ˜† 😹
@nixCraft I think I crossed over from 5 to 6 just a couple days ago when I registered a domain one late night and abandoned the idea by morning.
@nixCraft Looks like 6 at the moment. Probably will let 2-3 expire in the next few months, but I may get to the others eventually…
@nixCraft where are the poll options that go into the 100s 😬
@nixCraft @timbray this is why allthegooddomainnamesweretaken.com ← any good ideas for this are welcome
@aglet perhaps you could build a random domain name generator?
@aglet @nixCraft @timbray inform about sedo and comnercial domain parking. Every time I'm looking for new domains, I come across sedo. I can't stand them.
@nixCraft It's the nerds version of being a supporting member of a gym
@nixCraft I’m still paying for my old php/MySQL host for no reason other than I can’t say goodbye to my old 3 Wordpress sites πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜…
@yuletide i can recommend turning them into static pages. Then you’re off the hook for maintenance and can even host them then for free at a variety of places.
@brainsik interesting!!
@yuletide thanks! If you go down that road I can give you some tips. I migrated a lot of blogs years ago and recently (reluctantly) shutdown my wikis as well. Now I only have statically hosted pages.
@brainsik that sounds great where do I start??
@nixCraft i have 1-5, but soon it's gonna be 0, because we're rolling the projects out.
@nixCraft technically none of mine are parked. I have an idea for a project for each of them and for some I’ve actually installed some software in the hope of adding content someday. Others redirect to an active project. I did not count projects that were launched but now lay fallow but I did count those where the site is no longer there but I still have the domain.
@nixCraft Define "parked". I've got a couple of domains that might have been for something separate but ended up being redirects to existing adjacent sites.
@nixCraft
I have one, that use solely for more serious emails but that does not have any A or AA records
@ij
@nixCraft Does ENS count? πŸ˜‡
@nixCraft @azabaro I feel simultaneously called out and comforted. πŸ˜‚
@nixCraft 0.5 here.
I have 1 unused domain that I have cancelled the automatic renewal for but it hasn't expired yet
@nixCraft well, among others i'm the proud owner of data.porn
@nixCraft Probably like 10+ now. It is a struggle not to get more. So many ideas, so little time.
@nixCraft can you un-vote on Mastodon? I voted 1-5, then started counting and found more 😳

@nixCraft One of my clients, whose registrar account I have access to, must have over 200 domains registered. We use three.

EDIT: I voted 6-15, but I didn't include variations of active domains that I've bought so others can't. They are not in use, but I wouldn't consider them dormant.

@nixCraft Embarrassed to say I've still got a dozen after paring them down! I need professional help. πŸ˜…
@rdp @nixCraft LOL... I trimmed earlier this year or I would have had to move up a tier from 1–5
@nixCraft 0 only because I finally gave up and let a couple expire last year, and the last domain I registered I actually managed to get all the way done and published before my brain lost focus on it (a true Winter Solstice miracle)
@nixCraft I'm with the 4%ers (16+). I feel like such a deadbeat.
@nixCraft does a parking page referencing a TV show count?
@nixCraft had a couple for years and finally decided I wasn't going to do anything so let them go.
@nixCraft none, I don’t understand the whole domain thing
@nixCraft Dunno, my one domain is only for email, the other for DHCP (named after the SSID) … but I wouldn’t consider those projects
@nixCraft I only have a few domains and all of them have at least one DNS record pointing somewhere.
@nixCraft why are there no three-digit choices? πŸ˜…
@nixCraft @onepict tell me this is a nerd community without telling me this is a nerd community.
@nixCraft i'll boost if you promise to add alt texts to your posts :)
@nixCraft It's an alarming number.
@nixCraft Trying to cut down but probably still in the 6–10 region. Hopefully will be 1–3 in 2023.
@nixCraft
I feel like the scale on this poll is wrong
