fuck yeah@cubeofcheese @rob Yeah, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England are all countries, which exist, to greater or lesser amounts of irritation, as part of the United Kingdom. Which is also a country.
They all have their own governments, but are also ruled centrally by Westminster. A bit like American states and the Federal government maybe? It's all a bit odd and a lot of people aren't very happy about it.
@PoliticalPuffin @rob
Just come to Scotland then and be part of the movement towards a better future. You're welcome!
BTW - if you do it now you'll beat the rush of people fleeing England when the Tories win the next UK election farce!
@rob
That is fantastic news! Just one more reason to think I should move to Scotland.
I'm not trans, btw - just wishing I lived in a country that respects human rights.
@sofiav @rob
Yes, the SNP led on this, backed by the Greens.
There are a few TERFs and bigots, most of them jumped ship to Alba and the rest who made themselves known were booted out of the party, but couldn't be removed from office so are still MPs and MSPs, but I'm confident they won't be getting reselected so will bugger off into obscurity soon.
Nicola Sturgeon has been staunchly behind Trans rights even though it cost her some support, but we are better off without the bigots. You wouldn't see that level of honourable leadership from the UK parties.
@finsterling @rob
Very.
From the mainstream media, JK Rowling and co, and of course the Tories, supported by a smattering of Transphobic politicians across the parties and the angry TERF women's bigot squads, right-wing haters and christian crusaders, but the Scottish government stood firm on the legislation and got it passed.
That they did pass the bill reflects mainstream Scotland being a place of tolerance and willingness to embrace diversity.
There are still too many haters, but we are winning, and every day they become an increasingly dwindling lunatic fringe.
@rob Congrats, Scotland and the people of Scotland. Thank Engels we can still look north and see civility and respect towards and between people.
๐ Congratulations to all concerned.
Cheers,
Dave
@rob Great news, though the antis are *still* trying to block Royal Assent (apparently).
What will be interesting to watch now is how many GRCs are actually granted in Scotland. Judging by Ireland, and by other countries with liberalised gender recognition there wonโt be a flood.
@rob
A good point. Gender identity is not a medical issue.
And, contrary to popular opinion, there are not hordes of predatory cis men about to spend 3 months identifying as women in order to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate in order to enter women's bathrooms in order to harass cis women, when they can skip all that and harass them anywhere else.
