I chatted with a friend at work about Russell Brand photographing Katy Perry, and I said "I can't believe I'm using this word, but he tweeted a photo of her without makeup!" Ah the halcyon days. I still don't think that I'll say toot. 😬
Pedro Marques@tltroup @joshuatopolsky Good thing "toot" has been deprecated. Mastodon's founder dropped its use and it's now "Post" or "Publish" and "Boost". I still think Mastodon could use a better name... but then again Twitter caught on.

Follow lots of people for a start. Then follow people who reply to them. Once you end up with people who you genuinely want to follow, you can always prune your list.
Also, write a bit of an introduction and hashtag your interests there. Things will start popping up on your feed that way.
You can also use the search button and search a hashtag that you're interested in. Takes a while and I'm still sorting myself out
