I haven't "left Twitter." I just don't want to keep using it while it's banning links to other sites. Plus given the way things are going, it seemed like a good time to learn more about Mastodon.
@paulg I think more ppl are gonna follow suite. Seems the ban actually pushed more people here. I know it did for me
@jelanifromcartfuel it did for me. I will still need to access Twitter 'read-only' occaisionally for the time being, but I'm done contributing there. Mastodon is my new home.

@jhartshorn @jelanifromcartfuel

every scroll helps Musk. It means ads are viewed and he can tell advertisers about higher engagement.

The "twitter files" are a joke. It's showing a process probably a thousand times more deliberate and concerned with "free speech" than the one Musk has used or has any plan to use.

@paulg There's one aspect you'll like: no Quote Tweets on Mastodon
@firasd @paulg
Oh, you'd like to believe that now, would you?! ;->

@KraftTea

To be honest, there are only a very few quote tweets in the Fediverse.

And zero by non-smartalecks.

@firasd @paulg

@paulg Surprised to see Elon create such a heavy-handed policy. It makes me think he is seeing some worrying trends.
@treytitone @paulg I feel like he will see it worsen as he become more and more heavy handed.
I have not posted in Mastodon for a long while, but him banning alternative platforms was the last straw.
@treytitone @paulg Elon suspended Paul for a tweet mentioning that he even had a mastodon so I think the worrying trend is that people are leaving Twitter

@paulg elon is “smart” at pushing talented engineers and having a vision with electric cars and rockets. Socially—he is a moron.

#Twitter is a Private Organisation led by a Businessman. Everything else is noise. If you are expecting free speech it's like expecting free goods from Amazon #Mastodon #ElonMusk [ ] Yes, I Agree [ ] No, But...

mas.to

@jhannaway @paulg He's not even smart at that, just a lucky sociopath whose luck has run out.

"One former senior employee told me that the culture shift when Musk took over at Tesla was like when Voldemort's Death Eaters took over the halls of Hogwarts."

https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-business-playbook-boss-visionary-jerk-spacex-tesla-twitter-2022-12

Elon Musk was always a visionary jerk, bad boss at SpaceX, Tesla. But it won't work at Twitter.

Elon Musk has used the same playbook at all of his companies from Tesla to SpaceX. Sadly for him, his model will cause Twitter to go down in flames.

@paulg https://pinafore.social you can try this open source PWA client for mastodon. Supports multi instances (!), custom instance themes, ultra light and fast.
Home · Pinafore

An alternative web client for Mastodon, focused on speed and simplicity.

@DmytroGladkyi @paulg It's nice to try, not very feature complete, but gives a taste that clients can be better here.
@Ciantic @paulg do you use something else as a client? I find iOS masto clients a little bit simple. Official mastodon app , for example, does not load media from toots...

@DmytroGladkyi I still use web client, but pinafore is not a whole lot better, it's just simpler looking.

I did have the intention to try this: https://github.com/NicolasConstant/sengi it looks much nicer.

GitHub - NicolasConstant/sengi: Mastodon & Pleroma Multi-account Desktop Client

@Ciantic gonna try it on macOS! So far look great + focuses on multi instance usage. I have 3 accs need to feed them all hehe.
@Ciantic well, I am sold. Works great with 3(!) accounts I have. Can pick columns and rearrange as I want. Will keep using it for now. Thank you!
@DmytroGladkyi @paulg wow, didn't know about this. It's a far better UI. Thanks for the share.
@DmytroGladkyi @paulg Pinafore is by far the best looking, cleaner, leaner Mastodon client there is. It works perfectly on mobile, and on the desktop.
@paulg there will be no end to Twitter’s problems. After this “hurdle” passes, many others will come. The problem is the CEO, and absolute owner, of the platform.
@paulg same feeling. Welcome to Mastodon!
@paulg @Migueldeicaza indeed welcome, and thanks for admitting when you were wrong about someone. He is dangerously out of his depth and it is urgent for adult supervision to be instituted

@jonmasters @paulg @Migueldeicaza

i don't disrespect people who make bad judgments, we all do

i greatly respect people who publicly admit when they get it wrong, and describe how actual events changed what they believe

pg hasn't done that yet, so thanks are premature

pg will almost certainly get reinstated because he's prominent, rich, and a big supporter

let's watch what pg does when he's reinstated while others who are less prominent, less rich, and more critical remain banned

#freespeech yeah right

#twitterpurge

@ares @jonmasters @paulg @Migueldeicaza

This is the thing, it's the same 'he's just a bit eccentric' take you get from a lot of people, many who, like PG, should know better, which are actually quite harmful as they downplay the reality.

If you research his background you find that his alleged 'smartness' is not true at all.

I understand ordinary people getting this wrong, but for PG it's indefensible. They are the ones keeping the Musk myth going.

@ares @jonmasters @paulg @Migueldeicaza

Again, I firmly believe (and no offence PG, this is not an attack) that PG is a guy who has 50% highly insightful takes and 50% utterly wrong ones. It's an odd mix. This is firmly in category #2.

@ljs @jonmasters @paulg @Migueldeicaza

pg excuses his anti- #freespeech actions as a simple misunderstanding of social media

meanwhile the guy has been a genius in directing the spotlight on himself every hour of every day with social media, so he obviously he knows better than most how it works

this is willful blindness from pg because truly reckoning with what is actually happening would put much of pg's own positions in a very unflattering light

@ares @jonmasters @paulg @Migueldeicaza

I'm not sure I'd go that far. I mean I am not sure what positions you are referring to, I just think PG is wrong on the Musk thing, and I wish more tech leaders would be a little more careful promoting guys like Musk.

@paulg not to mention he’s a liar. Nobody “real time doxxed” him. The “woke mind virus” definitely isn’t a greater threat than climate change. Now he’s hanging out with Jared Kushner in Qatar and a bunch of anti-vaccine lunatics. The sooner people stop thinking this guy is an all around genius the better.

@paulg One of the first things to learn is that you can edit toots 😺

Re: https://nitter.kavin.rocks/paulg/status/22307238459

Paul Graham (@paulg)

Drat. Make that @avibryant. I wonder if it's necessary that you can't edit tweets? I.e. would Twitter have worked without that?

Nitter

@paulg,

The key thing is to preserve your right to choice i.e., #Twitter is just one of many #socialmedia spaces on the #Web where your activity levels and interests may vary 😀

Anyway, great seeing you over here, since most innovators are deemphasizing Twitter as their prime point of social-media presence.

#OpenWeb #Fediverse

@paulg very happy to find you here
@paulg welcome. Hopefully mastodon and similar will be successful to free us from that kind of disrespecting platforms forever. Joining popular content creators like you is very important to achieve this, I believe.
@murat @paulg Exactly what I think!!! I hope but it sooo much.
@paulg
Really the main difference is the people. There are more on twitter so you are more likely to find content that hits your niche interests there.
@paulg mastodon is so reminiscent of the old internet, bbs, irc, usenet etc. I mean the guy who wrote “Hackers and Painters” ought to be here.
@paulg +1 The learning curve feels steep, but it seems necessary, at this point, to explore alternatives.
@paulg I love your takes in general, but I've always felt that you had a blind spot for Musk.
@paulg great to connect with you and your network here!
@paulg for me the experience has been like using Linux for the first time. Rough around the edges but super amazed at there being a credible alternative that works well.
@paulg the internet is better when hyperlinks are allowed.
@paulg also most people don’t use the default client. Checkout other clients, they make a drastic difference in your experience
@paulg welcome! I don’t always agree with some of your viewpoints but I am happy that you are here.
@paulg If the end result of all this is Mastodon becoming a more serious mainstream alternative, maybe Elon did succeed in opening up and democratizing social media. ;)
@paulg lol this you?
@grislyeye @paulg i mean he’s not wrong in the sense that it’s not hard to run just a devops team and keep everything running
@grislyeye @paulg I’ve found PGs essays to be thoughtful and good faith over the years since I’ve been reading him. Given that, I’m sure his reflections on how #birdsite treated him between 11/16 and now will be thoughtful and humble. I’m sure he’s feeling whipsawed too and I think everyone deserves the chance to say I was wrong and receive grace.
@paulg Think you will like it here.
