I wanna see “50 over 50” awards. Who are the older folks who were dealt a shitty hand in life and persevered in the long run against tall odds? Let’s talk about them. Let’s celebrate them.
@charlotteclymer I see such people in my AA meetings every day
@charlotteclymer I don't consider myself older, 50 is the new something or another, right? Did have a not so great start to life, but what are you going to do? Cry? Nah! 🙂
@charlotteclymer 63 here. I’ve seen some shit, some of my own making, some not so much. I try to remember it’s the journey and am happy to still be here.
@charlotteclymer And 60 over 60, 70 over 70, etc.
@jeffmcneill @charlotteclymer if I can live to 120 i might just make it!

@jeffmcneill @charlotteclymer

Lol, this becomes increasingly difficult: 100 over 100, as there are fewer and fewer of them

@jeffmcneill @charlotteclymer Agreed! I was even thinking about running again and doing races, very small field in the over 70
@charlotteclymer What a great idea! Give people the feeling that they are significant for their whole lives, not just a few short years.
@charlotteclymer I’m over 50 yet another click over 50 will pass in a couple of weeks. I still feel young at heart thanks to my teens
@charlotteclymer Wednesday child is full of woe. That’ll be me too. But if one is open for help and and have some grit, anything is possible. And a loving partner.

@charlotteclymer my personal favorite is Henri Rousseau, who struggled in poverty and was mocked by much of the critical art world until he was found by his 'tribe' (Picasso and company) late in life.

He didn't begin painting full time until he was forty nine. Michelle Markel wrote a children's book about him called The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau - it was a struggle not to happy cry reading it to my kids the first time.

@valsombra @charlotteclymer I cried when I wrote that book. A pleasure to meet you on Mastodon.

@mgmarkel @charlotteclymer  thank you so much for writing it! It felt like a gift from the universe - our copy is well loved !

Impossible to describe how grateful I am - to you and Henri both <3 and how wonderful it is to have encountered you here on Mastadon!

@charlotteclymer as someone a long way from (directly) profiting from this I whole-heartedly support this. As long as it's not given to your random CEO white guy.
@charlotteclymer I nominate myself thank you very much 😬
@charlotteclymer 55 here and I successfully changed the clocks in my older car AND the microwave this week. I'll clean up a bit for the coming film crew...
@charlotteclymer 🙋 Nearly 52 and finally healthy and hitting my stride.
@charlotteclymer Yes! The wounded and weary need a little appreciation, too!

Pineapple Street Studios
@charlotteclymer I won't win it but underpaid for more than 30 years at one of the most successful broadcast companies in the country should get me an honorable mention.
@charlotteclymer
Sounds wonderful, I think women like me are as inspiring HRC, et al.
@charlotteclymer gimme another decade and it's me
@charlotteclymer Definitely love the idea. There’s so much praise for the younger generations, which is fine, yet valuing experience and wisdom gained should benefit all. 57 here and love to share some of my insights when asked.
@charlotteclymer - or like awards for just getting out of bed each day.

@charlotteclymer

If it was up to Time Magazine, the top five would be:

- Trump
- Elon
- Putin
- Jamie Dimon

aaaand:

- Henry Kissinger

@charlotteclymer I've deleted several draft responses so I'll just say: yes. If only because I've learned that *my* learning to do things late in life has inspired others to do so.
@charlotteclymer Also I'd love to see a version of 'young [insert art form] award' for ppl who take up a new art practice in older age. Not to usurp the young stuff but as an add. I think that would be fun and I suspect more inclusive for parents who didn't have time to pursue something until their kids were grown.
@charlotteclymer Teresa Hodge, formerly incarcerated entrepreneur and visionary, was named one of Forbes 50 Women Over 50 in 2021. She’s worth doing some Googling about her. She is definitely worth celebrating and amplifying. https://www.forbes.com/50over50/2021/
@charlotteclymer I’ve wondered the same. What about people who did the restart and made it work? Or just reached a milestone of persistent effort at something worthy?
@charlotteclymer hmmm.... white, tall, good looking, bright, middle class, parents celebrated 50th wedding anniversary, good neighbourhood, university paid for, 67 and father is still sending me money. Guess it's not me.
Why Kamala Harris is already among the most consequential vice presidents in history

If history is any guide, Harris stands a strong chance of casting at least six more tie-breaking votes and setting the record during her current term of office,

@charlotteclymer Been through some stuff 😳 Made it to the other side.
@charlotteclymer #60over60. I'm 64 & have not only survived, but continue to thrive after childhood abuse, abusive spouse & partners, raising 3 great adult children -one of whom was severely physically disabled and continuing to cope with #autoimmune diseases. As my grandmother taught me: "bloom where you land"
@charlotteclymer Life has been a struggle since I turned 50. I'm hanging in there, but it's not easy. Never take your health for granted. #fuckcancer
@charlotteclymer I haven't revolutionized an industry, made a scientific or engineering breakthrough, or written something of note. Yet having come from poverty to a comfortable retirement, I feel successful.
@charlotteclymer When on the journey of reaching the unreachable star, with 50 you are just warmed up 💪👣 🌟
@charlotteclymer Maybe 50 over 50 whose parents combined made under $50k per annum?
@charlotteclymer Yes to this! So many at every age who deserve recognition, whether it’s for something spectacular or “just” getting through the day with kindness and generosity. There aren’t enough awards, so I guess we need to honor each other.
@charlotteclymer this. Give me your bitter divorcees starting fresh and achieving great things. Your lifelong waitresses who finally scraped together enough money to start their own business. All your "fresh start at 40 and now hitting success" stories.
@charlotteclymer I'm 55 and only recently feel like I've achieved "grown-up" status. 🙂
@charlotteclymer I'd nominate my wife @Bakkerswuuf, but then I'll get smacked because she's only 49.
@charlotteclymer Definitely over 50 here. 75 and living with stage 4 cancer. Never particularly long odds against me, but just missed the mark so many times throughout my life. Divorced. Widowed. Somehow managed to learn and grow from each experience. Not famous. Certainly not rich. But a wonderful family and the best friend ever. I’m happy and I’m good with that.
@charlotteclymer Me, I am one of those people. I’m 62. The 5th of 12. Poor AF. Went back to school at 27. Finished my Ph.D at 51. Taught secondary full-time while completing 2 advanced degrees and commuting 150 miles round trip (took 13 years). Unlike JD Vance, I actually had nothing. Still don’t have a lot since I’m in academia. 🙂
@charlotteclymer does being 51 and 6 months and locked in a room with your younger sister's bio dad and her 2 dogs in a tiny house in a shitty suburb outside of god-awful Houston TX with no income and no friends and no way to escape but hey you're still alive count? asking for a frie... uh... for research... yeah... that's it... asking for research
@charlotteclymer yesssss
Let’s give the youth some hope. Lives don’t just straighten *themselves* out like paperclips pulled by a random magnet.

@charlotteclymer I like it (though I may be biased 🤓)...

There's so much that celebrates short-term performance (which often proves tramsitory).

So here's to all those that are doing good in their daily lives at whatever scale. M
