You know what actually feels unsafe right now? Musk on Twitter.
@baroquepawel @kkeller @georgetakei
Using a bitly link is a great idea. Simple, but these people are so lacking in imagination even that goes past their limited ability.
@kkeller @Franterest26 @FionaDobson @baroquepawel @georgetakei I just put mine in with spaces and said ignore the spaces.
@Ar1zonaKim @ mastodon . world
(spaces intentional so I can tweet it.)
@kkeller @Franterest26 @FionaDobson @baroquepawel @georgetakei
This is a new url shortner:
https://spacekaren.sucks/
Free speech really should be free. To bypass the new censorship regime at twitter, use this URL shortener to link to Mastodon or other censored destinations. Considering recent policy decisions on twitter, please be aware that use of links generated from this site may constitute a violation of their policy.

And it works well: https://spacekaren.sucks/ld173
Clean up your twitter: unfollow, unlike posts, delete your tweets - GitHub - bpawel-bclub/twitter-unlike-unfollow-cleanup: Clean up your twitter: unfollow, unlike posts, delete your tweets
@baroquepawel @kkeller @georgetakei
Tx for that.
I am thinking of downloading my tweets first. They span from the #ArabSprings to #UcraineInvasion...
Over 77k of them.
Will that break my laptop?
yes but the thing to do is to lock your account, not delete it - because after 30 days that username becomes available again, enabling trolls to move in and impersonate you.
@inclusiveWicca @kkeller @georgetakei
Yes...very good point...wise words.
@inclusiveWicca @georgetakei there are many ways to go about reducing one's footprint at Twitter.
I have almost no footprint on Twitter, and don't expect anyone to impersonate me, so I just left it dormant (after they suspended me after I removed my phone number from my profile). Someone like Mr. Takei may want to take the steps you suggested.
...but simply locking the account may also not be sufficient, since there are rumors that Twitter will deactivate dormant accounts. So Mr. Takei may want to have a bot post to his Twit account periodically to keep it "active".
The main point is to leave Twitter as one's primary microblogging tool. How someone does that is up to them.
Good to know, thanks! Yeah I have a Zapier thing set up to post my blogposts and YouTube videos to Twitter, and then a crossposting tool to post them to Mastodon, so that will also prevent my account being considered dormant.
@inclusiveWicca @kkeller @georgetakei
I've been using a crossposter, but I recently set it so it only posts one way, from mastodon to the bird site but not the other way around.
@inclusiveWicca @kkeller @georgetakei
That bird site is swan diving so fast that I don't think it's going to matter soon who is being impersonated or not. Let people impersonate, they already are and it's part of what has Twitter loosing credibility.
Is anyone here concerned with who might be impersonating them on Truth Social, or some other clown site?
But I'm just a nobody without a Twitter account. So what do I know?
@inclusiveWicca @kkeller @georgetakei
W/ both sadness & relief, I deleted my account. But I hear you. Protecting one's name & reputation does matter. #ElonMusk supports fascism & is openly ANTI-SOCIAL, so supporting the platform at all is ethically worse than a risk that someone might use a handle that you once used.
Twitter's institutional knowledge & structures are now utterly broken & won't likely recover. IMO putting one's hopes in a future rebirth is just holding onto a lost cause.
@batyalee @kkeller @georgetakei
Agreed, it's a difficult situation. I am not hanging on because I think there's a chance Twitter will recover, but because it seemed the best option for now.
@kkeller @georgetakei I agree completely~
Pretty soon having a Twitter account is going to be no different than having an account on Truth Social, or Frank Speech, or Gittr, or any other right-wing social media site
Yes, but also no, private companies can't have full control, they have to obey fundamental laws, also there is regulatory laws like the antitrust ones. Bottom line companies do follow laws too.
@ferrisoxide I agree completely that people like He Who Shall Not Be Named are lacking in scruples, and their decisions regarding the operation of a social media network can seem biased, callous, and self serving.
That being said, if Faux News can remain on the air for decades while repeatedly and deliberately broadcasting objective lies in order to foment hatred, violence, and rebellion, then Birdsite's suggestion that its competitors are dangerous ain't shit.
