Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

#twittermigration

@mastodonmigration It's so fun seeing all the fresh new accounts finding out that there's actually a social network that is free from bots, algorithms, and thin-skinned billionaire owners. #twitterexodus #twittermigration
The only reason it's currently free from bots is that it's small. If it continues to grow, there will be bots.
@blherrou Hey, two out of three ain't bad. πŸ˜‰
@blherrou but each instance admin can ban bots...
@rimmon1971 yes, much like anyplace with a bot problem
@blherrou yes, but some places *welcome* bots and *thrive* by them. Some places I don't mention, but you sure can imagine πŸ˜‰
@blherrou Bots stand very little chance of being successful here, because there are no algorithms to boost and amplify their posts.
@isturiz huh, somehow it works with email πŸ€”
@dbsalk @mastodonmigration until the billionaires come here
@chumsack @dbsalk @mastodonmigration There is no mastodon company for a billionaire to buy and ruin. That can’t be said for CoSo, Post, or any of the other microblogging sites.
@dbsalk @mastodonmigration Yeah, but now time to find things I am interested in. Of course most is on more popular platforms.

@ICDURCALI @mastodonmigration Hashtags are your friend. Use them liberally and add them to your profile. You'll find your people soon enough.

Or your people will find you. πŸ˜‰

@dbsalk @ICDURCALI @mastodonmigration
One important note that I discovered the hard way...

When typing #hashtags in Mastodon, putting the pound sign before things you have already typed doesn't make it an active hashtag. You have to type the pound sign, then REtype the hashtag text.

I have that as an old habit and early on, I kept forgetting to do that.

(#newbie info.)

@AnneTheWriter @ICDURCALI @mastodonmigration I'm trying to remember if I've had issues with that. Maybe it depends on the app you're using? πŸ€”

I do know that in general, if a hashtag has more than one word, we should separate them out with caps. This helps the visually impaired who use screen readers.

Thanks for the feedback. #OxfordComma FTW!

@dbsalk @ICDURCALI @mastodonmigration

I edit my posts in Firefox (my default on my phone). Maybe that's a factor? Idk.

@AnneTheWriter @dbsalk @mastodonmigration Is it reported here already? https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues unless you are running an app like the ones on the Play Store and App Store

Easy guide to building Mastodon bots

Twitter is dead! Long live Mastodon! I've written lots of 'bots for Twitter - and been part of their developer outreach programme. Lots of us have politely requested improvements to the bot experience on Twitter, but to no avail. So, today I'm going to show you how to quickly and easily write your first Mastodon-bot. Bots In Spaaaaaaace Step 1 - you need to set up a new account for your bot. …

@mastodonmigration it will be sustained, any overflow send to opalstack.social
@d3cline @mastodonmigration Is the your Mastodon hosting managed, as in, does Opelstack take care of the Mastodon installation, upgrades, etc.?
@john @mastodonmigration For our main instance yes, for private instances we would have our support team available for any assistance if you needed it. Both are available.

@d3cline @mastodonmigration

That's a good product to have, but I think fully managed is really what's needed. I think you have a lot of people out there that probably know how to organise a community, but will be completely put-off by the tech stuff.

Heck, I can programme and still went with fully managed hosting.

Masto.host has a great product in this way, but are full!

@john @mastodonmigration Well the OS is fully managed, and we do much of the work, we have a one click installer. Really the key difference is we will help if asked on a private instance in your own account, and we just do everything for https://opalstack.social this is how we provide postgres, mariadb, ngxinx, and many other FOSS projects. So it was a natural progression to mastodon. I would suggest you check out our 14 day trial to see how the platform is. I am happy to answer any thing else.
Opalstack Social

For professionals and brands. Focus on your market, not administration.

Mastodon hosted on opalstack.social

@d3cline @mastodonmigration Hey, yeah, sorry, this isn't for me, I have a managed server I'm happy with.

I'm just imagining the people drifting around right now, who have no idea what anything you just said means, who might start their own Mastodon communities.

@john @mastodonmigration thanks for the feedback, it helps me know the market.

@d3cline @mastodonmigration Yeah, I don't mean to be telling you your business, as I don't really know how viable it is for you, obviously. But I like to see hosting companies in this space.

There are people I have had conversations with that I would have directed to masto.host, with their fully managed hosting, but I can't anymore because they're full. I did sees a couple setup before the deluge, so the market is there.

@john @mastodonmigration I appreciate it i really do, I followed you so I can keep an eye on your admin journey. And we may still be a viable option for some people, our scope of support is the most extensive in the industry. (I am willing to provide you support on another platform even) please keep us in mind.
@john @mastodonmigration so on the private stack side things like upgrade in particular we are around if you need it and can do the work, but wont unless asked so we don't mess up your project. on our fully managed instance we do everything.
@mastodonmigration this was exactly why I got together with a friend and rolled my own instance, didn't want to be part of the flood on the larger servers if I didn't have to be.
@mastodonmigration are there any recommendations for creating additional mastodon servers? Specifically hardware?

@Chaostronaut

It all depends on how large you want to become. I recommend making a plan and setting bounds for your system. Like 100, 1000, 10000 users. NOT MORE.

Think of rules and audience.
From chaos.social a very awesome instance

Her awesome advice:
https://chaos.social/@leah/109514086537833385

iirc @nova did some writeups about hachyderm. A younger and bigger instance.

Good luck and consider staying small :)

@mastodonmigration

@mastodonmigration
Wouldn't it make sense to trickle-reg-allow or temp disable hotzone servers regists ?

@mastodonmigration

If you just signed up on a big instance and it is slow, consider moving to a smaller instance.

If you have decent technical skills, you can even set up your own instance -- it is fairly easy to do so. You will be helping Mastodon cope with the influx of refugees from the fowlsite.

@charvaka @mastodonmigration Another thing to keep in mind if you're running your own is to use some Relays at the start. While there's no "officially sanctioned" ones and they're kinda hard to find, a lot of larger instances or groups have one. They will provide a firehose of content into your server making it feel like a much more federated experience until you get more naturally connected.
@mastodonmigration Truly ! #Mastodon admins are doing an amazing job handling change on a massive scale. Things may slow down for a couple of days but quickly rebound. Welcome fellow twit expats. With #TwitterExodus comes big challenges for instance admins. Things may slow down for a few hours or a day but then rebound. Relax & be patient. There is a lot to like about the place

@mastodonmigration

Edit: problem solved. The issue was operator error. 😁

I tried to log into my account on the web client and it told me my email or password was wrong. So I asked to change my password and never received an email.

I think it's fair to say Mastodon is struggling right now. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

@mastodonmigration what a cool and enlightened take! I've been here less than an hour and already the environment and vibe is 100x better than my Twitter experience. Excited to dig into and discover this new platform!

@RadDad @mastodonmigration @crazynanabernadette

Welcome. Follow who you like here, don’t worry who’s following you. Boost posts rather than favourite if you want others to see themβ€”you create your own algorithm.

And use CW-content wrapper/warning for posts that might be triggers for others. If you use media, be sure to add a text description to aid accessibility.

You’ll soon find like-minded folk.

@mastodonmigration I really am loving this social network! I hope it grows exponentially in the future
@mastodonmigration Twitter life boat...welcome aboard. It kinda like Dunkirk...but we'll rescue as many of you as we can...
@mastodonmigration I haven’t seen a mass migration like this since the demise of Digg.

@mastodonmigration if you're a progressive and want to connect and build a network here, let's connect.

I'm a Social Democrat, a nerd, musician, and total night owl. If you're any or all of the above, let's connect.

@mastodonmigration

Let’s use the name #BYEHAL to signal Twitter users to come to Mastadon

Because Elon is HAL

@mastodonmigration If there is anything a new user can do help just write us what we can do. I am sure it is in the interest of all of us that Mastodon is effectively working even in case of a big surge in new users.. I think we all can and should help

@dc29 Just enjoy it. Oh, and use hashtags!

#twittermigration

@mastodonmigration Thanks.. learning it all 😁😁😊
@mastodonmigration teething issues are bound to happen when platforms are scaling to match surge in demand

@mastodonmigration

Thanks to all who are helping make this platform work.

@mastodonmigration Some #Servers have stopped accepting new people. I guess when this dies done (If it does) than those Servers will open up again.
Plenty of space on #fediverse and everyone is welcome. Yet another instance to consider joining = https://microblog.club

@mastodonmigration I feel kinda bad now for spite-joining Mastodon tonight after I read Twitter banned Mastodon accounts. But also these emoji's are awesome
@gnatattack @mastodonmigration Love the emojis here. We've made our own called floofmojis
@mastodonmigration A shout out to all the hosts, thank you for saving our sanity
