Listening to the Twitter Space where Musk buddy Jason Calacanis is defending the removal of journalist accounts (to many of the journalists who were removed, who somehow can still join the space).

And he's RAGING about personal danger, and insisting this is something totally new (it's not).

Um. Also this was the same debate about Jan 6 / Trump decision. That Musk & friends mocked & insisted was unfair.

Jason saying "if you've been on the other side of this" (meaning stalked) "your position will change immediately."

How is he then NOT CONNECTING THIS to how trust & safety has worked at Twitter going back years?

For what it's worth, I get kicked out of the Twitter Space every 2 minutes or so and have to rejoin.
Oh great. Elon's in the Space now too. This will be fun.
Elon claims that linking to ElonJet is "ban evasion." Which is... quite a ridiculous interpretation of "ban evasion."
Sorry, it's tough for me to follow this because I get dropped from the Space every 2 minutes or so. And it looks like Elon also just got dropped.

So... I kept getting removed from the Space, and after Elon left it was just reporters discussing and not much to report... but now the Space is dead... even though people were still talking...

So now we have to wonder, did Elon just pull the plug on the space?

@mmasnick I was there and wondered what happened…
@mmasnick never attribute to malice, etc
@mmasnick same, disconnected about 5x, and right when overlord was about to speak.
@mmasnick He had to redo the space. Too many options.
@mmasnick Do bears shit in the woods?
@mmasnick I think he was telling them that Ban Evasion was a ban able offense and the ElonJet account (and the other banned journos) WAS in the space so he's going to fall back to that as his excuse. Amazing. just amazing.
@mmasnick after having an exchange with a banned journalist (Drew), it probably bugged him that the banned person was still participating on Twitter
@mmasnick Yeah, I bet finding out all the people he banned from his club house was a real suprise to the super smart real good code evaluator guy and he had to find someone left in the cavernous offices to nuke it.
@mmasnick
You can see/hear the spaces conversation here. His ban evasion argument wasn’t cutting it so he left when pressed.

“Holy Shit. Elon Musk just popped into a Twitter Spaces chat with a bunch of journalists. He was called out by journalist Drew Harrell, who he banned, for lying about posting links to his private information, then leaves almost immediately after being pressed. Here is the exchange”

Twitter

@dhaimes @mmasnick My connection was fine, and I thought they were all having such a good conversation, even while Elon spoke. I was not listening when he left but came back to hear a continuing conversation with Elonjet articulating his concerns in light of the changing landscape and what Elon said, and then poof it all cut off.

TBH by then there was a bit of rehashing of previous statements going on by then, but I think a lot of the basic concepts and concerns were spelled out pretty clearly.

“Sorry it appears the Space cut out, screen went suddenly blank on my end and everyone got booted.”

Twitter
@mmasnick given that the links to it are showing up as "Details not available" now instead of just "this Space has ended", I'm assuming he did
Brennan Murphy on Twitter

“Here is Elon’s full appearance in @katienotopoulos’ spaces with banned journalists tonight”

Twitter
@mmasnick I couldn’t help cut wonder how the results to his personal “polls” would be used also

@mmasnick
The person who started it (Katie) said something about wrapping up and everyone agreed, but then asked #ElonJet if they had any insight into #Musk's motivations from his responses during his brief time in the Space. I hopped off then in disgust (Musk's motivations are now, and have always been, clear).

Sounds like it ended a few minutes later, so it ending of their own accord or being ended by Elon are both equally plausible.

@mmasnick
Unclear whether it's incompetence (Twitter hiccup because no maintenance) or being intentionally killed. Not sure how much Hanlon's Razor applies here.

Darn it!
I’m trying valiantly not to click links to there.
This is one I did.

What a … tool.

@mmasnick ...if only the people who built Twitter Spaces weren't fired. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@mmasnick

Well, at least you know it's nothing personal. :)

@mmasnick I'm listening in too, I think he just said his piece and left honestly.

@r00tdenied @mmasnick Yes, "end of story" then a disconnect according to this:

Ernie Smith (@[email protected])

LOL, Elon went into the Twitter Space, was asked a tough question, said “end of story” and left. What a baby!

@mmasnick I'm sure he'll head down to that team's floor to see if there are any of them left to fire—or sell their desks out of spite.
@mmasnick I've been recording for an hour
@jsit @mmasnick Be sure to share. Intersting
@jsit do you have the jason part? saw you posed the elon bit...
@mmasnick He stormed off more than dropped, explaining that any news about a website that has information on it that he doesn't approve of is disallowed on his site.
@mmasnick You did get a shoutout about how this is yet another example of a speedrun through content moderation.
@mmasnick What's also interesting is that after kicking a fit in the space, where he was clearly upset, he's back to "lol 🤣" responses to his supporters, trying to dunk on AOC, reposting polls because what he wanted it to result in didn't happen, etc.
@rjgnyc wait, by who?
@mmasnick I think Drew? The context was how Elon is [poorly] grasping the fact that content moderation can't be just "is it illegal"
@mmasnick I doubt he got dropped. He showed no interest in directly answering any questions and left after a timid effort to control the narrative.
@mmasnick it is still going. Elon spoke and basically repeated that doxxing will get you banned and pretty much said journalists will be treated just like citizens. In short I think the analysis here is Elon is simply looking for Elon. He said his stuff and then left.
@mmasnick
all of the muskrat mooks are weak tea.
@mmasnick An infinitely more modest version of going to Mars, ain't it
@mmasnick waiting for him to ban everyone in the space
@mmasnick I've been stalked. Jason is wrong.
@mmasnick Jason used to do tech podcasts I’d listen to and he always rubbed me the wrong way. Only popped back on my radar lately and I didn’t miss him.
@mmasnick
Calacanis never fails to live down to his reputation.
@kims @mmasnick you can’t deal with bad faith
@mmasnick I've met top dollar clowns who've been fortunate. Jason is up there.
@mmasnick I'm disappointed that none of the speakers are calling out the phony and disingenuous premise to his line of questioning
@ekozie @mmasnick
I think there were a couple attempts at the start, but imo they let him go on too long and gave up control. Once he declared he was changing the topic of the space from “journalists being banned” to “what kind of world do we want to create” and no one cut him off, I couldn’t take it anymore and stopped listening.
