My suggestion if you want the Fediverse to work, follow and favorite and boost the absolute hell out of people. It’s not about dopamine or clout chasing, it’s about letting people know they’re not just typing into a void.
I appear to be getting a lot of follows as a result of this, this was not my aim and you should follow me at your own risk because I’m boring as hell.
@jsit challenge accepted. You may not be as boring as you think you are. Or maybe you will become less boring. The future is not written yet!
@jsit πŸ˜‚ no worries I wait for your occasional #Geistesblitz πŸ˜„πŸ€ž
@jsit when you're right you're right. Truth is not always exciting
@jsit A person with such a profile picture can't be boring.
@jsit
I don't find you boring and yes, I'm following you. My account offers #USpol as well as many other interests. Yet, I would consider myself boring. πŸ˜€

@jsit

I'm just following you so your posts land in my instance, it's nothing personal πŸ˜†

@jsit No problem πŸ‘ I followed you because of your ridiculous profile photo 😏
@jsit That's fair enough, I'm pretty boring myself.
@jsit interesting people often feel like they’re boring.πŸ˜‰
@jsit I guess I’m a risk taker 😬
@jsit Boring is a little bit of a refreshing break after what was going on over at that other place :P
@jsit cuz we don't know what we're doing yet. Onward!
@jsit Haha, having a lot of followers always sounded stressful to me. Good luck
@jsit I haven’t followed you yet.
@jsit It’s surprising how many people don’t get this. There’s no algorithm. It’s not about chasing likes etc. It’s about actually having to… well, be social on social media. Who’d have thought.
@Howard Personally I think it’s ok if people chase likes or apps build algorithms. I was just saying you have to let people know their posts are reaching people so that they stick around and continue to post.
@jsit This. πŸ’―
@donmelton @jsit Don just so you know I have voted you Mastodon’s MVP for 2022🀘
@stephen @jsit Thank you! πŸ‘ I think. πŸ˜‚
@jsit thank you. I have been feeling the absence of interaction here.
@jsit Yes I have been doing this but have wondered if I was over boosting vs writing posts. I see many great posts on the Federated timeline and love to share them if interesting, unusual or fresh. Can one over boost?
@GraceIsPizt @jsit
Personally I fave a lot and boost a little, and aim to have my profile timeline no more than half boosts. I want my boosts to be *special*, but I'm happy to giving credit and thanks and high-5s all day long :)
@xian @jsit
Thanks Helmingstay. Good target for profile mix!
@jsit my experience on here, from the very start, has been so much more positive than Twinter is Coming
@jsit My understanding was that only boosting increased visibility, not favorites. But I'm a newbie, I could be wrong.
@Redshift42 That’s correct, but favoriting lets people know somebody liked something they posted
@jsit You are not typing into a void, Jay. It is a series of tubes ...
@jsit Yeah I see so many posts without even a star. I feel bad for them so usually favorite them myself
@Cynthia @jsit
Maybe depends on local instance, but as a long-time #twitter user who started migrating just a few weeks ago, I've seen *way* more engagement with my original content toots here than at twitter over past year (ie leaving aside replies). FWIW, I find myself speaking to a smaller but more specific audience here.
@jsit also, follow basically everyone who looks even vaguely interesting, you can always unfollow them, and the more follows you have, the more boosted posts on your timeline to find new people to follow, then the cycle continues
@jsit I'm thinking those of us who still have accounts at the birdsite need to tell all our followers how to migrate to the Fediverse. Especially the journos, lawyers and subject matter experts we know...
@jsit what about meaningful replies to people's posts?
@jsit
Yes, that it the big difference I see with Twitter. Someone hears you over there for better or for worse…
@jsit and for allowing others to find more interesting people to follow
@jsit Yabut I’m trying to find the people I followed over at the other place, however either they haven’t migrated over or they have created an account & don’t post.
It’d be easier if I hadn’t been blocked months ago for posting about Madison Cawthorne, that pathological liar. I’d still have a list of people I enjoyed following & chatting with
#MastodonProblems
@jsit I'm fairly new on here. How do you Follow- I cannot see a link.
@Troels If you're using the web interface, just click/tap their name to go to their profile page and there's a follow button. I don't think you can do it direct from the post.
@timtfj Thank you Tim - I did in fact find a site that tells me a lot about using Mastodon. Once again thanks for responding

@jsit
Follow and boost people of similar interests, and who show good will and good faith, sure.
Just make sure to avoid boosting for its own sake. I'm here, for instance, for science, pedagogy, rationalist philosophy, and education topics.

#philosophy #education #teaching #science #AI #pedagogy

@jsit πŸ™ you get it. TY
@jsit I could do that if more than the same two accounts show in my timeline. How I can see more people’s post? Finding difficult to figure out how this works.
Post section is the same post for hours if not days. News are the same plus I have seen two-years old news πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
@jsit I type into the void.
@chris_mahan And some people see you there πŸ™‚
@chris_mahan @jsit Been there, done that. But I see you. πŸ™‚
@jsit Dear #TwitterMigration and #Twitter lurkers listen to the nice person and follow the fuck out of their #advice.
@jsit Pardon my ignorance but what is Fediverse, What are federated posts?
Thx
@jsit
I very much agree with your point of view. As a newcomer I am still basically illiterate within the Fediverse and the nglymany instances. The first time someone favorited my comment I was thrilled. Ridiculous I know but I was very unsure at that point and suddenly I felt emboldened that maybe this would work. Especially those of us coming from the very vocal Twitter with hundreds of followers if not thousands. Which increasingly became bots and trolls and a right pain. So say hello
@jsit I would like to add to this, that if you have the means, then financially supporting those that run whatever server you are one, would also be a great idea. I'd sooner give the guy that runs Mastadon €8 a month than some fashy git.
@jsit While people certainly need to know they are not posting in a void, I see a danger in overly boosting toots. When I follow 50 people, and 30 of them boost the same post it won't be interesting for me anymore. Also if people make interesting toots, engagement will follow in comments. Maybe not in the numbers we're used to on Twitter, but with the switch to mastodon there needs to be a shift in mindset about the amount of engagement.
@jsit It turns out, social networks work well when you're social with them! O:
@jsit Typing into a void is how I felt on Twitter. I probably get more reactions on Mastadon.
