Looking for a good Mastodon client - Apple Silicon native would be best so I can run on iOS/iPadOS/macOS - happy to hear suggestions.
Finally got Ivory and sorted out my login.
@Drwave Long time listener, first time caller. First impressions?
@darrien just starting to pay attention…
@Drwave @ivory though only iOS right now and hard to get a TestFlight spot.

@Drwave
Some clients have been updated since this post but it’s still not a bad reference.

https://docs.vmst.io/post/2022/11/ios-clients/

FYI, every time I try to run an iOS Mastodon app on my M1 Mac they all seem to prevent idle system sleep. Even when an app looks like it’s been quit, it keeps running in the background. (And my monitors will not turn off on their own)

iOS Client Options

What client should I use on iOS?

@marcoshuerta @Drwave omg it's the iOS apps doing this??? I was wondering what was causing it recently, looks like I now know!

@donmacdonald In the terminal:

pmset -g assertions

Can help diagnose sleep woes. I noticed the official Mastodon for iOS app causing problems, and I believe others do as well.

@marcoshuerta Thanks for the tip! I had filed it in the “huh that’s interesting, see if it persists after a restart” file, but then kept forgetting
@Drwave @bigzaphod it’s Ivory but it’s in beta. If you. Any get ivory get mammoth which is also in beta if you want an App Store option honestly I’d stick with mastodon official for now.
@Drwave You’ll probably just want to wait for @ivory.
@Drwave definitely Mammoth by @JPEGuin. First rate iOS client with a passable macOS experience.
@Drwave Mastoot by @libei is great for multi device use as it supports timeline syncing
@Drwave I’d hang tight for @ivory. Tapbots makes solid apps. They’re working on both iOS and macOS versions.
@Drwave The released client I’d recommend most right now is Mastoot. Ivory and others looks very promising.
@dgoldsmith why do you recommend it?

@orsvarn Of the released clients, it has the timeline-fetching model I like most (like e.g. Tweetbot), it’s reasonably up-to-date with the latest Mastodon 4.0 features, it syncs your current timeline position across devices using the Mastodon API, and it’s been stable.

Word of warning: if you go to your instance’s web site logged in, Mastodon resets your timeline position to “latest,” which is very annoying. I had to log myself out of the web site, which isn’t really practical long term.

@dgoldsmith thanks for the explanation! 😁

Sounds pretty compelling. I might try that one next! So far I like Tooot better than Metatext better than the official client.

Metatext was too laggy. Tooot is really smooth, but jumps around a bit when refreshing which is also annoying.

@Drwave Mastoot is the only one I’ve found that keeps your timeline position in sync across devices. And has editing of posts built in. Pretty decent client overall.

‎Mastoot

‎Mastoot is a simple client app for Mastodon. Features: • Home • Notifications • Explore • Search • Local timeline • Federated timeline • Messages • Favorites • Bookmarks

App Store
@Drwave @dgoldsmith so glad to see you here! @ivory on TestFlight has been amazing, but very much still a work in progress. They've committed to releasing a native macOS version, hopefully soon-ish 🤞🏼
@Drwave I switch between the official client, Mastoot, Mammoth, and the Ivory beta. Each has benefits and drawbacks and is being actively developed. Very exciting to see it happen in real-time and participate.
@Drwave Using Metatext until Tapbots brings out a Mastodon client.
@Drwave been happy with @metabolist’s @MetaText, which is mostly a workalike for the iOS Twitter client, bud sadly it’s EOL so actively looking for alternatives. Have also been liking @tapbots’s @ivory which is in alpha and a Tweetbot workalike if that’s your jam.
@Drwave welcome welcome! I’ve been using metatext and I like the ability to switch timelines (federated ftw) and good alt text/image preview features but I think I’ll switch to ivory when it’s available for laypeople
@Drwave interested you’re not just going to stick with the main one for easy discovery since the most folks are there. My only beef with this whole situation is how hard it is to find everyone
@jessicahische @Drwave the app is independent from the server. You can run any 3rd party app and it’s still just loading the same data as the official Masto client. Finding people is a bit of a drag anywhere but the movetodon-style apps from twitter make it easier. I think this will be improved in the future. Feeling like we’re in twitter 2008. Optimistic etc.
@303 @Drwave if they would just open it so you could see who people are following on other servers it would be soooo much easier. In early twitter that’s how I’d find everyone! Just go through friend’s follow lists
@jessicahische @Drwave yes it’s so stupid. You have to click through to their pages on other servers. There’s a shortcut to make it easier from @justin
Justin Velgos (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image Here's another Mastodon iOS Shortcut. This one lets you view someone's Following list (even if they’re on a different instance) and open one or more of those Profiles in browser tabs to see their posts, so you can figure out who to follow with less friction (and then use my other Shortcut to follow them without the copy/paste steps). https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/829d0e0f292842d8a6753cd999e77896 Once added to your Shortcuts app, just share a Profile to the Shortcut to use it. #iOS #Shortcuts #Projects

@jessicahische @Drwave One of the best tools to find folks on here that you know from Twitter is https://movetodon.org/
Movetodon: Finds your Twitter Friends on Mastodon

@jessicahische the main one?
I’m talking about iOS client app, not the mastodon instance. I don’t think there is a “main” client out there. Seems like there’s a new one every week!
Using Ivory for now.
