Today is my 1 month anniversary of signing up for Mastodon. A few observations—after spending 13+ years on Twitter:

•The Mastodon community is kinder & more focused on lifting one another up than tearing down.

•Mastodon is learning from Twitter's mistakes by including accessibility options, incorporating an edit button, & not centralizing everything

•Engagement is not dependent on clickbait or outrage, but genuine positive content.

None of the above are absolutes, but overall, glad I'm here.

@QasimRashid It's decentralized by design which is a model adopted by several other social media applications. It also means that it's really difficult for an external party to block it.
@QasimRashid Agree with all this. I’ve had to consciously dial down my reactivity here and be more like, hey, these people I’m meeting are behaving like they’re guests in my living room. It’s so odd (and welcome) after the mob-in-the-town-square place.

@QasimRashid to be fair, the community on "the fediverse" is comparatively young.

That being said, it's not without issues. People "at the top" in the project could let fame go to their heads if they're not careful.

@root @QasimRashid There's no such group though. There's just each server owner. A very disparate group. And if you don't like them for some reason you can start your own instance of mastodon and federate with all the others you want to.

Every public interest organization could have its own server. Your neighborhood could. A knitting circle in the next town could. The Senate could. The ACLU. It doesn't need ads. It will never be owned by one billionaire

@SusanKraemer @QasimRashid I didn't mean "admins at the top" - I'm very much aware of per-instance management.

I'm talking about the developers and project owner for the Mastodon *code*.

@root @QasimRashid even that seems to be just one and the same guy.
Mastodon: a partial history (DRAFT)

I'm flashing!

The Nexus Of Privacy

@ccradle @root @QasimRashid Corey, you are right - a bit more than one guy!

But now you can mute, block or report any poster by clicking on the 3 dots bottom right of their post, also can choose who to follow, accept or reject a follower

@SusanKraemer
Yep...looks like community is moving things in the right direction. More work to do(especially around welcoming Black Twitter) but there's hope.

@root @QasimRashid

@QasimRashid as a small account, I've really noticed both the first and last points. I get more engagement here and replies are always nice, which wasn't really the case on Twitter.
@QasimRashid and we’re glad you’re here!

@QasimRashid Thanks! I've been on for nearly two weeks and would agree with these.

I want to switch my professional Twitter account over at some point, and am paying a lot of attention to which industries are on here. Journalists, techies, academics, and healthcare/medical professionals appear to be taking off. In my industry of FinTech startups, not so much ... but I know things are changing quickly and am watching.

@QasimRashid
Posted this morning.
@PDFlynn @QasimRashid It’s one of many foundational shifts we’ve experienced, Covid, politics, financial and global…I’ve said (more than I’d care to admit) how I’m tired of living in history.
@PDFlynn
Now it's just to hope that Twitter will finally serve as a warning example for people not to rely on centralized platforms. The purposes of Facebook, Instagram, Github, Reddit, Stackoverflow and the like may differ, the fundamental problems however are the same. Hopefully the next great migrations take place before forcefully initiated by a platform meltdown.
@QasimRashid
@QasimRashid
I'm finding it hard to log in, and find people, but hopefully that will improve.
@Singlepayer1978 It will. Was a bit awkward and clunky at first but now that I have the hang of it it's much smoother.

@QasimRashid @Singlepayer1978

Your client software should take care of the logins. What r U using? I have used Tusky (on Android) for at least 5 yrs and have never had a problem.

@Singlepayer1978 @QasimRashid

The best thing for getting some new voices into your timeline is to follow some hashtags for some things that you are interested in. It puts posts from people using those hashtags into your timeline. Then you can can interact with and follow people posting about those topics. It has really helped me with connecting to people here.

Click on a hashtag, and then when you get page for it, click on the icon in the top right corner of the page.

@dorkland @Singlepayer1978 @QasimRashid

Also when you read something interesting tap the poster's thumbnail photo. That takes you to that person's home page, where U can subscribe to that person and get his/her posts in your home feed.

@Singlepayer1978 @QasimRashid requires a Twitter login but it helps locate your followers who are here https://www.movetodon.org/
Movetodon: Finds your Twitter Friends on Mastodon

@QasimRashid I've been here 2 weeks, and so far my experience matches yours. I've found many, though not all, of the people I followed on Twitter here, so I'm not missing much "good stuff" from Twitter. And thanks to the "Local," "Explore," and "Federated" buttons, I'm finding new people to follow.
@QasimRashid - glad we’re all here - we deserve some peace.
@QasimRashid welcome! I just joined today as well. Hope we see more content here grow
@QasimRashid
Same for me; I really don't miss Twitter at all and I feel like my cortisol levels have dropped.
@VixieGirl57 @QasimRashid Agree to the lowered cortisol levels. Feels better.
@pammurtaugh
Yeah and I like a lot of the content on here. It's interesting without being inflammatory.
@QasimRashid I agree on these counts, and I'm very glad to see you here.
@QasimRashid
Debirdify (https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/) and Fedifinder (https://fedifinder.glitch.me/) can be used to find back old Twitter friends.
Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@QasimRashid Every day it feels more like home here. Today I came here instead of Twitter for news in the morning and then I switched the place of the icons of my screen. Feels right!
@QasimRashid
Glad you’re here! I’m personally over the moon satisfied being here. I always come across interesting people, and even the occasional disagreement has a degree of civility the other place completely lacked. Didn’t even know what I was missing till now.
@QasimRashid I’m new here too and I kind of like it. Love your work.
@QasimRashid
Resonated with me a lot. Twitter has been a lifeline for me, but the ugliness has worn this old woman down. Your observations have encouraged me. I am glad you're here also!
@QasimRashid - I like the way that Home, #Explore, Local and Federated work - I feel like I'm seeing what is of interest to me rather than being fed what the platform wants to feed me - but that's just my gut feel.
@QasimRashid so far, mastodon has been boring, but in such a great way if that makes sense. I haven’t had to wade through a sea of trolls.
@QasimRashid Joined recently (part of joke twitter w/occasional dips into political) and I love how relaxed it feels. No algorithm blocking people for whatever random reason. Get a chance to interact with more people. I like scrolling the federated TL to see what others have to say. Overall, very positive experience.

@QasimRashid Very few of my former Twitter community is here, but I hope they will join. It’s a nice community.

I’m on Post.news too, and it seems to be the shiny coin for the moment. But maybe they should have worked out their moderation and bugs before they let everyone (including me) in. I much prefer Mastodon right now.

@anjy @QasimRashid yes, post seems like it's making the same mistakes as twitter - monetizing communication. So it can't avoid growing into the same tempting dish for the next elon.

@SusanKraemer @QasimRashid I find the tipping system distasteful too. And of course, the only people who will be tipped are the influencers and popular… (privileged) people.

I won’t use a single coin.

@QasimRashid Ditto! I’m quite pleased with this instance too. It’s refreshing :)
@QasimRashid I agree with all of this and really like it too. There are critiques though. It feels lonely comparatively. And there are things about the servers I do not understand (maybe from being mobile-exclusive). Like where are all the people I know?
@harvey1966 @QasimRashid That's just because it is still small. Twitter was small too in 2009 when I joined it.
@SusanKraemer @QasimRashid maybe so, fingers crossed. but a lot of people I know are *here*, yet there is still a feeling of disconnect and unease because of the added layer of complexity. “can I see their feed, even if they are on a different server,” and so on.
@SusanKraemer gods. you made me look up my twitter date (2007). seems a lifetime ago. it’s been part of the discourse for a decade and a half, which is wild.
@QasimRashid I can honestly say I go to bed a lot less angry since ditching the Twit and finding this community.

@QasimRashid This seems mostly true. I have had a good experience, but I'm a white guy who mainly posts photos of my hikes.

There are some people with large followings who offended the trolls on Twitter who find that the trolls have followed them here and harass them here with racist/misogynist attacks, and since the attacks are only in replies that stuff doesn't show up on the timeline and overstressed moderators aren't keeping up. I hope ways can be found to deal with that.

@QasimRashid plus - the 500 character limit is far more conducive to having a real conversation than a couple grunts and an emoji.

I think this multiple decentralized containers (servers/instances) to contain multitudes of us holds real promise for how to grow sustainably

After all twitter had 5,000 employees. That's going to always cost one billionaire. Better to have multiple sites, but federate them together to chitchat

Also, if you hate black backgrounds you can change it to light mode.

@QasimRashid I agree. I only fear the feeling of old days' bulletin boards will start to wear off with more people coming in. There is a social theory that any community that grows above a certain level is doomed to fall apart.

I just enjoy mastodon until then and am happy the masses are not yet here 😅

@QasimRashid Agree completely. Also, I feel SEEN!
