Mississippi is America’s Blackest state. It’s mostly white MAGA Govt annually rejects $1B in Federal $ for Medicaid. Now the last hospital in a rural part of MS is about to close—devastating Black & low income people.

MAGA racism & cruelty on full display. Like the old saying goes. Republicans claim government doesn’t work—then they get elected and prove it.

A Mississippi Delta hospital anchors its community. Now it may close.

If Greenwood Leflore Hospital closes, residents in the Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest regions in the U.S., will have to travel farther for health care.

NBC News
@QasimRashid I know from experience this is true
@QasimRashid So sad. These folks vote against their own self interests to own the Libs.
@smilingoutloud @QasimRashid Mississippi has some of the worst voter suppression in the the United States. It is rarely as simple as “voting against one’s own interests.”
@WeShall @QasimRashid Very sad because Mississippi is such a poor state and rank some where around 43 in education.
@smilingoutloud @QasimRashid Poverty and lack of education are methods of suppressing the vote. Many of our Republican elected leaders seem to actively hate their constituents. Never mind the fact that there is no organized Democratic Party in the state.
@QasimRashid thank you for bringing attention to this situation. This will be a devastating blow to an already dire situation.
@QasimRashid They should do a gofundme. People from all round the world would donate to keep it going, to stick it to the racists.
@punctilious They have a website, and the "Ways to Give" links are all pretty much broken.
@QasimRashid wow, killing your citizens to own the libs
@rifter @QasimRashid For them it's a feature not a bug - these are white supremacists.
@QasimRashid Unbelievable. Brett Favre was given $70 million from the public assistance fund. The poorest state in the country. The state refused Medicaid expansion.
@QasimRashid This country, I'm sorry to say, is an abomination.
@QasimRashid their calculative cruelty and racism never stops.
@QasimRashid not sure why you are emphasizing race so much in this. Take the racial lens off. Government subsidies of a hospital that does not have the financial support from county tax base is not a long term solution

@gunnard @QasimRashid racism is the focus, because if they were in white areas, they'd still be open.

This isn't hard to understand.

@NosirrahSec @QasimRashid that is a mighty racially based accusation. I wonder if there is anything yall cannot bring down to a purly racial issue. amazing.

@gunnard @QasimRashid when the issue affects, at a vastly higher proportion primarily minorities, it is a racism issue by definition.

I'm sorry that you don't understand this, but it doesn't change the fact.

@NosirrahSec @QasimRashid so then, any issue that is decided upon in mississippi is racist via racism... because as @QasimRashid stated, mississippi is majority black (minority) .. right.. makes sense.. regardless - monitary issues are not primarily based off of people skin color. THAT is racist.

@gunnard @QasimRashid

I'm too tired to explain how white politicians, enacting policies that primarily affect minorities, monetarily or otherwise, is racist.

It's quite literally textbook.

@QasimRashid Mississippi has been among the poorest, least educated states in the nation for as long as I can remember. It has also been a red state for as long as I can remember. It all seems intentional at this point, and yet the voters reliably vote republican time and again. Clearly, the haves are being taken care of while the have-nots continue to suffer.
@jon_nelson @QasimRashid Please consider voting laws in Mississippi.
@QasimRashid seems like the UMMC had an opportunity but did not see a future in this hospital either. Are they racist too? Privileged? https://mississippitoday.org/2022/11/04/ummc-wont-save-greenwood-leflore/
‘We did not have a Plan B’: UMMC won’t save struggling Delta hospital

Without an agreement with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Greenwood Leflore Hospital could close before the end of the year.

Mississippi Today
@gunnard I don't know, were they the ones who repeatedly turned down $1B from the Federal Govt every year since 2010 to get to this point? No? Okay then. Stop conflating.
@QasimRashid Black population, white government. Reminds me of Apartheid South Africa.
@QasimRashid exactly. the wrecking crew has been at it for decades.
@QasimRashid Black people need to have a migration strategy.
@QasimRashid doesn’t this discussion belong on twitter.
@aWanderer @QasimRashid Why is Mastodon not an appropriate venue for this discussion?
@QasimRashid This really is sad; I spent the better part of 2 years doing contracted EHR deployments at GLH. It was grueling work; sleeping in a hotel with very few restaurants to dine in. But it was always worth it because the people there desperately needed quality & efficient healthcare. And they were just good damn people. This is really devastating to see.
@QasimRashid Imagine if all that money stolen by Republican Politicians and funneled to Brett Farve had actually gone to people that needed it or to Hospitals to increase services instead of slashing them. How much does the administrative team make all the while demanding more from less staff?! SMFH
@QasimRashid
Nowhere in the article did I see any of the facts you mentioned. It’s because NBC is more concerned with not offending people than fully informing them.
@QasimRashid re: “Mississippi is America’s Blackest state” — if voting rights were truly intact, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and other Southern states wouldn’t be so reliably red states.
@QasimRashid Took wife to a Urgent Care/Emergency room up here in the state of Washington. The contracted nurse from Alabama was highly surprised most everyone was insured up here. Hmmmm….
@QasimRashid as someone from the rest of the world - why? Why would they reject funding for health care? Why does the population keep voting in the rich white men who do that?
@QasimRashid this is just not right, we can not let this happen in 2022
@QasimRashid Racism and government corruption are among the many reasons I left the state. I realize in retrospect that if everyone leaves who can it won't get better, but my mental health couldn't take it anymore
@apryla @QasimRashid It feels like an uphill battle all the time.
@QasimRashid It literally is a form of genocide. Or the elected officials are imbeciles (odds are both) The Federal government covers 90% of the expansion so it is asinine to say no. Furthermore most of these states already are federal welfare states so it is baffling. Then add the dimension that COVERING low income people SAVES money. Prevention is way cheaper than getting primary care in an ER
@QasimRashid I wonder how much of this is based on the state government not wanting any "strings attached" to the funding. I'm not saying racism doesn't play a part but I imagine other factors motivate this decision as well. Perhaps they think this gives them more "freedom"?
@QasimRashid How can people reject funding for healthcare!! Or perhaps people they ain’t 🤬🤬🤬🤬
@QasimRashid reminds me of US soccer changing Iran's flag-claiming support re:women's rights/Iran. Why not speak up agst rights taken from women in US and rights to health care denied to low income populations. Delete stars on flag corresponding to no. of states that do not allow women's rights, health care. Will the US continue 2 be the pot calling the kettle black?

@QasimRashid
I don't remember who originally brought it up, nor even what she called it, but the swimming pool effect is so applicable here.

White people will close down a public swimming pool that is mostly used by white people just to deny its use by a small number of African-Americans.

@QasimRashid My Mother came to Mississippi in 1956 as a young bride from Chicago. She was bright, cultured and energetic. She soon adopted a cause, getting the local city council to fund a public library that would be easily available to everyone. They were quickly told by a prominent council member (old, white male, of course) that “Anyone who NEEDS to read can afford to buy their own books.” This is the definitive attitude.

@QasimRashid

This is deplorable..what in the hell is wrong with white America...😠😡💥🙄

@QasimRashid This is a sad example of what is happening in so many states controlled by the Republican party.
@QasimRashid, but, you know, freedom! And, uh, emails... um, and CRT. So there.
@QasimRashid The Democrats need to get out the vote in Mississippi!
@QasimRashid Yes. They do the same with public education.
@QasimRashid so why is the Federal Govt allowing disunity among the USA?
@QasimRashid The hospital is doing what Republicans intended it to do by closing. That is what the people in power intended to happen by refusing to expand Medicaid.
@QasimRashid
It’s equally a damnation of the way the Medicaid system is administered by the law passed by Democrats in 1965, no doubt to appease racist Dixiecrats.
