1. There are a lot of Twitter alternatives out there, and I've been experimenting with many of them

But let me put in a word for @[email protected]

I've been impressed

Mastodon

@[email protected] 2. The primary gripe with Mastodon is that it is confusing.

But it really isn't.

It's a decentralized system, like email.

So you pick a server, just like you pick Gmail or Yahoo

But then you can communicate with anyone

You just need their address and you are good to go

3. And there are tools to identify which of your Twitter followers are on Mastodon.

And easy ways to import spreadsheets of many users you can follow at once

Here is a big one with hundreds of journalists: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13No4yxY-oFrN8PigC2jBWXreFCHWwVRTftwP6HcREtA/edit#gid=1320898902

So it's relatively easy to get started

4. Mastodon also has its own app (which is pretty good) and a bunch of other 3rd party apps

There are also tools that will cross-post your Mastodon posts (toots) to Twitter (or visa-versa)

This makes it easy to build an audience on one network while hedging your bets

5. The key part is Mastodon is part of an open protocol and not a corporation seeking to extract money from you by mining your network

Tumblr says it is going to adopt the same protocol so people on Tumblr can follow Mastodon accounts

It makes social networking more like email

6. Would email be "easier" if everyone used the same centralized provider? Probably.

But I think we've seen again & again that spending time building an audience on a network controlled by one corp is not ideal

Some of the other alternatives follow that centralized approach

7. I've been on Twitter since 2008 (before Musk joined), and I like it here. I hope it survives and thrives. I hope Musk makes it better. (So far, that hasn't been the case.)

Ultimately, I will go to where people are. I want people to see my work.

8. So as someone who relies on Twitter and has spent time looking at the alternatives, I thought I would share my thoughts, which could change.

Let me know what you think.

9. I have active accounts for my reporting on

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/popular.info/

And TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@popular.info

I also have a http://Post.news account but haven't started posting yet: https://post.news/juddlegum

@juddlegum It's so depressing Twitter is deteriorating, all these alternatives are tougher to navigate and interact.
@MrFix3 Mr. Fix it, hi. The way to make this place spectacular is to scroll, boost and follow what interests u. As u boost content, this will resonate with people who are interested.This connects u across the #fediverse   and soon magic is in your feed. Have fun, enjoy. You can easily mute or unfollow accounts that are not interesting u. # what you want to see. It can be great here.
@cpep @MrFix3
I like the feature that you can just hide what an account boosts without unfollowing them.
@cpep @MrFix3 This. Building your circles of sources you trust to introduce you to the additional sources you want is key. It was key on Twitter too but we all forgot how it was before we did that 6-10 years ago.
@juddlegum I'm liking Mastodon too and I hope you'll keep posting here regularly.
@juddlegum I just listened to Bot Sentinel creator Chris B. on Twitter spaces about his possible new social media creation. Immediately after listening, Twitter suspended my little ( less than 500 follower) account. So, that was suspicious.
@juddlegum I am concerned about post.news's model.
@juddlegum I have applied for a Post account, but haven't been accepted yet (waitlisted forever, methinks). I'm glad I found you here, follow you on Twitter, and will follow you on whatever platform you migrate to.
@juddlegum Glad you're here and hope you stay!
@juddlegum Started following you on Instagram. Enjoy your tweets and toots.
@juddlegum use # for people to follow when #tooting
@JDCrazyJ @juddlegum this is cross posted from twitter
@andysternberg @JDCrazyJ @juddlegum This summarizes one of several problems with crossposting from there to here -- the post or thread here doesn't show hashtags since it's coming from Twitter. This makes it harder for everyone on this end; it's less likely people will see it, and it's difficult to search for it since one needs hashtags for an effective search.
@JDCrazyJ @juddlegum I agree. Hashtags are crucial to being discovered on #Mastodon.
@juddlegum
I think it’s good that you’re seeing the potential benefits of decentralizing social media. No one man should be able to control the sociopolitical narrative. That’s dangerous. And you, as a journalist, have a moral obligation to help maintain that fourth estate for the sake of a healthy democracy.
Just my two cents.

@juddlegum

I was on the bird site since Jan 2017 when America went full time crazy

Built up 2-3 accounts to several thousand followers each. Had 1 acct suspended permanently in 2019. LOL.

Twitter was getting repetitive, old, stale & boring

It was definitely time for something new & different

Technology changes, evolves, slowly but inevitably

@juddlegum I’m old enough to have watched many platforms dry up and become worthless. I like this one, as you mentioned earlier, because it is adaptable and expandable without being reliant on one entity to keep it going. I’m tired of jumping from place to place and trying to rebuild networks.
@juddlegum Love that you’re here. I’ve always appreciated your level-headed approach to all the madness. Thank you for this thread as well.
@juddlegum I have basically been going around claiming my name. Mastadon is okay. I do have to say that the lack of a central sever makes me a little uncomfortable. When I first joined, it was on the ".social" server. Then I found out that I couldn't log into my account on that server using any of the apps, so I started over. I am on CounterSocial, which I like, and I've applied for Post because I like long-form content.
@juddlegum I just joined Mastadon. I still have my Twitter acct that took me forever to get over 6k😂 Twitter just gets nastier every day but I’m not quite ready to let it go.
@juddlegum
I have checked a few. I agree that mastadon looks like the one that will succeed. It just needs a few improvements to the user experience, which will no doubt happen as a result of the rapidly growing user base. The open source nature of it is the thing that makes it different, as it won't be vulnerable to another red-pilled billionaire buying it out if it is successful.
@juddlegum
I’m wondering if you’ve tried Metatext. It’s an open source Mastodon app that I find useful and somehow easier to use.

I am glad you are here on Mastodon. I have no interest in Instagram or TikTok as those two have sketchy ownership: FB/Meta and China. I also subscribe to Popular Info. Please stay here, you shine a bright light in the darkness.
@juddlegum Your work is so important. I hope I continue to see it here. You have opened my eyes to so many issues. Thank you.
@juddlegum but are you willing to share space with white supremacists and hate peddlers just so people see your work? #twitter #elon
@juddlegum @harrisjody this is where I’m torn with Judd. I enjoy his newsletters and have a paid subscription. But I really wish he’d hold himself to the same standards as he holds the corporations he reports on.At some point you have to take a stand. IMO staying on bird site means you are normalizing the hate that #ElonManChild is allowing to circulate. I understand it means relinquishing influence and power for Judd, and that is hard. It’s not an easy step.
@fcv @juddlegum It’s worse than normalizing. It’s legitimizing and monetizing. I don’t envy those whose livelihoods depend on social media, but it’s the mechanics of change that are difficult, not the decision. Elon is an objectively bad person who is doing something, I think, with malicious intent and with potentially devastating consequences. I don’t have the power to change anything, but I can do my part. Those who can affect change need to do so now.
@juddlegum
Judd: My question is what KIND of Twitter do you want to survive and thrive?
I want social media platforms that have TOS defining what's allowed or not allowed. What actions do they take to enforce them?
What is allowed on Twitter & who makes that decision?
Right now on Musk is The Decider. He's overruled the TOS developed over the last 10 years. His definitions of what "free speech" live in his head.
He can choose to enforce, or not enforce, violations of his definition.
@juddlegum
why not post on a variety of sites? twitter, mastodon, post, tribel? why is it necessary to choose just one?
@juddlegum the problem with this "where the people are" stance is that Twitter is the 14th platform with the most users. There are others like Facebook and YouTube that are far away more relevant by their huge amount of users. Twitter is making itself unusable
@juddlegum Makes it better by heiling Hitler????
@juddlegum Followed you in birdland, will boost you here. No worries.
@juddlegum That’s understandable but sometimes you have to be patient & let things evolve organically. I have only been on the Mastodon network for a week & a half & I find the creative energy palpable.
@juddlegum Hoping Musk makes it better is like hoping Trump would make a good teacher at an all girls school. Neither of those leopards can change their spots.
@juddlegum I would agree but I do not want to support Musk at all due to his racism, sexism, etc. which have turned twitter into parler/truth social lite. I hope Musk fails & has to sell twitter to someone with ethics or that another platform takes its place.
@juddlegum What happens if Elon Musk kills Twitter? I'm troubled by reality that he was able to purchase Twitter at $44bn vs its true value at about $25bn with financing of $13bn when interest rates are rising. He's lost 1/2 of his advertisers. Twitter in its best days struggled to earn profits with mostly advertising revenues. If he turns Twitter around to where it's not losing monies, he's Houdini. This won't happen with his cost cutting, not paying his bills, making employees work 24/7, etc.
@juddlegum I joined in 2009 to discuss healthy behaviors and mindfulness. Ego Must and his ilk helped me disembark in 2022. Twitter is now worse than a hornets nest for $8. I'll keep searching for a place that fits me.
@juddlegum You hope Elon Musk makes Twitter better? Is that a joke or what? That's like the dinosaurs hoping that comet makes their world better. And why would you want Twitter to survive? I don't. No one in their right mind should.
