BookWyrm is a Fediverse alternative to Amazon's GoodReads.

It lets you keep track of what you're reading, see what friends are reading, discover books and write reviews.

You can import your data from GoodReads, LibraryThing etc.

People on Mastodon can follow BookWyrm accounts.

@feditips @bookwyrm New here... So ActivityPub is what drives #mastodon and #bookWyrm, right? So just because both aps use it they can federate?
@denebeim @feditips @bookwyrm yes, because they both use ActivityPub they can federate. Though it might not be seamless, because of differences between Mastodon and BookWyrm.
@denebeim @feditips @bookwyrm
Exactly.
With your account on mastodon you could follow accounts on bookwyrm.
@feditips @denebeim @bookwyrm yes, ActivityPub is a set of rules that Mastodon and BookWyrm decided to follow, so that the can be “federated”. Pixelfed (and many other apps) also do that. It’s truly magical 😍
@denebeim yes. People on Mastodon can follow BookWyrm accounts or viceversa.
@feditips @bookwyrm Can you guys import some of my data from goodreads or would I need to re-enter? This would be lovely.
@bookwyrm @feditips @galinash Bookwyrm allows importing data from Goodreads, including ratings and shelves. Worked well for the vast majority of my books.

@galinash
@feditips @bookwyrm

It takes a day or two but you can get a copy of your Goodreads data from them and import it into Bookwyrm. There's a few tutorials out there, and I used one I found on a web search to do just that.

@feditips @galinash @bookwyrm you can import form goodreads with a csv. Needs some editing afterward.

Wyrms has a slightly different concept. There is a public list of all books known in the fediverse. Your list on wyrms consists of references to that list.

@Mathpaul @feditips @bookwyrm Great to hear anyway. Been meaning to move off goodreads ever since they got acquired by Amazon and that's almost a decade ago 😅 . And I see bookwyrm can also import from LibraryThing 👏
@galinash @feditips @bookwyrm yes, you can export your data from #Goodreads and import that into #Bookwyrm . I just did mine, took about 15 minutes, and only 10 books not found.
@kevinrutherford @galinash @feditips @bookwyrm as a newbie…is there a post or link somewhere explaining the process for how to do this?

@feditips @bookwyrm I joined. And of course I didn't join bookwyrm.social.

I had a choice. It was very difficult. bookrastinating.com made my choice for me by being down at the time, so I chose books.theunseen.city. So that's where you'll find me.

@feditips @bookwyrm #newbie here: so if I join a bookwyrm does that mean I leave my current server? Or am I just part of 2 servers
@feditips
@bookwyrm

Time to revive my reading club and mount a #Bookwyrm server at home
@feditips @bookwyrm One problem I have with this is that there is no "exploring" per se, only searching by keywords.
@feditips @bookwyrm I made an account about a week ago but I am wondering if there are any tips or guides about adding books to Bookwyrm that I can't currently find. Should I add them to an open book database first or do I add/edit the book directly on my instance?
@feditips @bookwyrm @Karelt If my booksearch shows no results, I simply add a new book as shown in my search results.
@feditips @bookwyrm ooo right up my alley! Now to try and get the hang of it. Newbie here!
@feditips @bookwyrm Hi it’s my first post on here I today left #tweeter and am part of #tweetermigration silly question how do I post on my account 🙈
@Orangejuice @feditips @bookwyrm on the top right of the screen, next to your profile picture, is a “publish” button. press that to post. I guess it’s kind of in a weird position.
@ruleofthree @feditips @bookwyrm I’m slowly getting used to fediverse, I’m mostly using official app, switched to Safari today and discovered tons of notifications. Guys would Toot! Be better than browser? Thanks again for your patience 😊
@feditips @bookwyrm is there any SSO capabilities with the fediverse, or do I have to create a separate uid/pwd for each fediverse app? #Newbie
@geoff_horsey AFAIK you would need distinct accounts in each Mastodon server.
@feditips @bookwyrm
I'm open to migrating, but replicating my massive Goodreads TBR list seems a chore. Anyone know of an export/import method (i.e. csv etc?)
@TheSeege @feditips @bookwyrm yes there is import from multiple platforms including goodreads
@TheSeege @feditips @bookwyrm yes, CSV export/import works, and #Bookwyrm gives clear instructions
@TheSeege @feditips @bookwyrm This might help [former?] users of GoodReads to transfer their books: https://fedi.tips/the-fediverse-beyond-mastodon/#ImportingYourDataIntoBookWyrm

@feditips @bookwyrm is there a mastodon server for soccer fans??
@IcicestTg @feditips @bookwyrm
Probably you should make a new toot for your question, since only people (like me) scrolling through the answers can see your toot.
@feditips @bookwyrm just when I thought I understood all this newfangled stuff. so they’re both part of the wider fediverse, but they’re also two different platforms. so I guess they can interact, right? how does that work? does having an account here give me access to that, too? or do I have to have an account for each platform and they can integrate at the same level as, like, a slack app or something?
@feditips @bookwyrm I am excited about leaving Goodreads. I will have to look into exporting my shelves.
@feditips @bookwyrm As a book lover, I am now following this!
@feditips @bookwyrm looks like I have a new thing to set up. LOL.
How does it comparte to @thestorygraph? Except for not actually being on Mastodon?
@feditips @bookwyrm
@feditips @bookwyrm does anyone know how this compares to TheStoryGraph?
@feditips @bookwyrm I don't suppose there is anything like this for movies?
Imdb was amazing and then it was Amazon
@feditips @bookwyrm is there a similar one but for KDramas or TV in general?

@Stevemchugh

Just thought about you when I read this tip...😊
