Finished #reading "Orbital." An astonishing, compact novel written with extraordinary care. Harvey follows astronauts in the International Space Station for the course of a single day, during which they orbit the earth a number of times. There is a contrast between the carefully managed and circumscribed life inside the tube of the space station, and the roiling earth that they see below them as continents tumble in and out of view.

Ever since my PhD contract has ended last month, I have been going through my personal project backlog, including this very Mastodon account and actually making progress on my personal website.

Yesterday, I was thinking what to do about my Goodreads account when I discovered @bookwyrm and by proxy @OpenLibrary and @inventaire ! Obviously, I am now on bookwyrm.social.

Because my Goodreads shelves are a mess, many of my books can't be imported automatically, including some japanese light novels and web serials. The latter, I've never really bothered to track outside of dedicated websites (novelupdates, ao3, fanfiction.net) because of how difficult it is.

Big question for people in the know and #librarians, is there a database of web serials or am I doomed to add my books manually (or programmatically)?

Nachdem ich das getan habe: Ich persönlich halte davon nichts, aber wenn eine Person das möchte, dann los. 😃
Ich selbst trenne Werk und Autor:in lieber recht strikt und bin auch selbst lieber in einer beobachtenden Position. Sogar Ich-Erzähler:innen sind mir "zu dich dran", aber die lassen sich aktuell ja kaum vermeiden. 😅

One of the bits of mental hygiene when I moved to the #fediverse from other places was to never use apps on my phone to read an endless scroll of posts. I dabbled with some and decided that was exactly the wrong move. I occasionally post reading progress with a #Bookwyrm app but I read nothing on my phone.

It really does help avoid feeling like reading the posts is this task you have to do, and you scroll down forever. For all the "we are federated, no algorithm, no VC backing" hippie dippie shit about the fediverse, I truly feel infinite scroll social media is inherently unhealthy. Just because it isn't backed by the same awful billionaires that back every awful thing doesn't mean it is good for you. It's a tool that I use but it should not be a lifestyle.

Finished #reading Whitehead's "Sag Harbor." Last stop on working my way through the Colson Whitehead back catalog. Describes the summer of 1985 at Sag Harbor through the eyes of the teenage narrator. Each chapter tackles a different aspect of summer life (job at the ice cream shop, goofing off with BB guns, awkwardness with girls, etc.), while there is an overarching narrative about the protagonist's home life.
