"Mastodon is just like email."
Like email? So I use Microsoft Outlook?
"Use WHAT"

(Tools -> Account Settings -> RSS Feeds -> New -> https://mastodon.social/@Gargron.rss)
@zhuowei why did i not think of this
@n0toose I was planning to write my own POP3<->Mastodon proxy, but then I found that Outlook natively supports RSS...
@zhuowei @n0toose Yes. Fully featured Outlook, Office 2021 included. Sadly, this is considered a premium feature by Microsoft, so no support for this in either Outlook Express or Windows Mail.
@sazanlip @n0toose Windows Live Mail does support it, according to ABM_Prottoy: https://twitter.com/ABM_Prottoy/status/1594186824981032960

@zhuowei you still need *something* to post, right?
@elfprince13 Yes. (Although I wouldn't be surprised if someone is making a SMTP to Mastodon proxy)
@zhuowei now there's a UI I haven't seen in a long, long time
@astraleureka I installed Outlook 2007 by popular demand (https://archive.org/details/en_office_enterprise_2007_dvd_vl_x12-19574_202104). You're welcome.

@zhuowei IMAP ActivityPub connection when?
@xolagix I considered doing a POP3 to Mastodon proxy so I can use Outlook Express or even, say, the Mobile Game Boy Adapter to check Mastodon, but then I found that Microsoft Outlook 2007 supported RSS natively and it was too funny not to use

@zhuowei Ayy! that also means I can check Mastodon feed on my Samsung dumb phone as well!

It has Opera Mini and it will pull up RSS feeds fine (although images are illegible in most cases)

@zhuowei I can do you one better. I use carrier pigeons.
@zhuowei That idea puts you firmly in the "chaotic evil" box on the alignment chart.
@slothrop Microsoft Outlook is Lawful Evil
@zhuowei @slothrop is it though? Not following the standards of e-mail IMHO put it well into the chaotic camp
@hook @zhuowei @slothrop MS is "lawful" in the sense that it mostly follows the rules it makes for itself. It's "evil" because it makes those rules to its own been benefit.
@tob @zhuowei @slothrop Obeying the laws you set for _yourself_ is pretty much anarchy ;)
@hook @zhuowei @slothrop a man must have a code! I find the D&D characterizations fascinating precisely because they're ambivalent about outcomes. "Good/Evil/Neutral" and "Chaotic/Lawful" are about how the character views themselves, not how they're viewed by others.
@tob @zhuowei @slothrop
I played a few rounds of D&D, but never dived deep into it. But from what I understand “chaos” vs “lawful” according to its Wikipedia article, I’d still say MS’ position is not “lawful” in the world where SMTP, IMAP, MIME, and all the other wonderful RFCs exist :)

@hook @zhuowei @slothrop should have added this content warning to that last toot
@zhuowei weirdest RSS client out there.
@zhuowei My mind is blown and I'm going to share this tip immediately, THANKS A LOT
@zhuowei That's ... wow.
@oblomov @zhuowei We don't generally do alignment anymore for beings that aren't embodiments of this idea. It barely worked in Chainmail.
@zhuowei someone needs to make a UI shaped like Outlook 🤪
@zhuowei that's a new level of perversion. I don't like BDSM content...
@zhuowei an rss feed per user?
FediTips has moved! (@[email protected])

RSS fans! You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL. To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon. For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab: https://mstdn.social/@feditips So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address: https://mstdn.social/@feditips.rss This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed. #RSS #MastoTips #FediTips #Mastodon

@zhuowei we are full circle back to subscribing to usenet groups in Outlook, like I was in the late 90s.
@zhuowei That is a very old version of Outlook 👵🏻
In Outlook 2021, you go to File | Account Settings | RSS Feeds | New
@zhuowei ...Oh dang. Definitely giving this a try.
@zhuowei well it’s not thaaat different form RSS + Pingback 😄
@zhuowei It‘s works… not not all features are supported. Makes Outlook the worst Mastodon Client 😉
@zhuowei I've seen Mastodon in DOS, in Windows 3.11, on Commodore 64, but Outlook takes the cake.
@ygalanter @zhuowei really? I hate to ask how this works because I don’t think I’d get it - anyone want to explain it like I’m 5.
@RebeccaPRN @ygalanter Mastodon exports each account's most recent posts as an RSS feed, and Outlook supports reading RSS feeds: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/108357998963885456

@RebeccaPRN @ygalanter @zhuowei I'll give it a shot :) RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a way of sharing information in a standardized format. RSS reader software can subscribe to an RSS feed from any site that provides it. This was the best way to keep up with blogs, when that was more of a thing. Using an RSS reader feels similar to getting emails from everything you've subscribed to. In this case, Outlook's RSS reader is subscribed to the feed of Gargron's posts on Mastodon.
@RebeccaPRN @ygalanter @zhuowei I ran out of characters - should probably also add that an RSS feed is made up of "articles," or individual pieces of content. An article might be a blog post, an image, or... a toot :)
@ygalanter [email protected]
Any day now, we'll see it displayed in Doom, and that Doom will be running inside a Mastodon post.
@zhuowei No. Just… hell no. No way am I adding Outlook into this, lol😹
@zhuowei Oh my gosh, this is terrible. I love it.
@zhuowei and the circle is complete
