Hello, #histodons 👋
I just joined #Mastodon so I am briefly introducing myself.
I am currently a #PostdoctoralFellow at #UniversityCollegeDublin where I am researching a project entitled “Making Fun of the Fascists: Humor Against the Leader Cult in Italy, France, and Germany, 1922–1945.” This is a study of how #humor was used as an instrument of political resistance against dictators in Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and Vichy France.
I earned my #PhD in #History from #CornellUniversity (2021). My #dissertation / current #bookmanuscript in progress—“Lives Under Cover: A Comparative History of Fascist and Nazi Spies, 1927-1945”—is a transnational history of totalitarian #surveillance extending from the creation of the Fascist secret police to the end of World War II.
I’m slowly learning how to use this platform, so I am looking forward to engaging more with all of you!
@benedettacarnaghi This sounds fascinating. Humour can be such a powerful weapon.
@benedettacarnaghi Sounds wonderful! #Anthropologists also talk about #humour, mocking, & #creativity as weapons against regimes (it's partly why the bird site was so great, for a while). I hope you will share your papers, and examples of #antifascist humour here! 🙏 #academic #research #knowledgemobilisation #knowledgemobilization
@HyL thank you so much! Yes, I’ll definitely share as I move forward with the project 😉
@benedettacarnaghi Such a cool topic. I watched The Great Dictator for the first time a couple of years ago and it blew my mind. I also graduated from #CornellUniversity, but in 2003. I miss Ithaca!
@anythingwithanm I show “The Great Dictator” to my students 😁 so much fun! Glad to connect with a fellow Cornell grad 👩‍🎓
@benedettacarnaghi Yes! Laughter is the best medicine. My survival proves this. And we're all living in must-laugh-to-keep-from-crying times. Look forward to following you.
@Sandyknauer thank you so much! Looking forward to following you too 😁
