Twitter's hateful conduct policy as it applies to the targeted harassment of trans people has effectively been revoked.
@dell now, will the new policy be enforced?
@gwync @dell they just unrolled the policy, meaning trans people can complain about getting harassed and they won't be listened to unfortunately
@maxamaxim @dell well that's shitty, even for birdsite.

@gwync

yeah it's becoming like those other right wing trumpy sites

@maxamaxim @gwync @dell ...which, frankly, was the case 99% of the time before
@dell because the owner shares their same views. It’s disgusting.
@dell i had to go look for your post on twitter, it's not showing up on my feed
@dell is there an explicit change in policy, or is it just implied by their reinstating Babylon Bee after they were suspended for hate speech against transgender individuals?
@DaveMWilburn he vaguely declared it but the actual rules pages are still up. he basically said hate speech is allowed but they’ll demote & demonetize it. except anyone who knows anything knows that’s not actually going to happen. he doesn’t have the staff to make that commitment.
@dell @DaveMWilburn Sounds like “the free hand of the market” BS popular with annoying manchildren.
@GrittyLipids @dell @DaveMWilburn except that the market (meaning the advertisers who've always paid the bills at twitter) is actually very conscious of brand safety and doesn't generally want to be associated with hate speech. It will be interesting to see how musk will try to get some money out of his birdsite screwup.

@roccobarbi @GrittyLipids @dell 100%! Oddly enough, Disney Corp probably doesn't want their promoted tweets showing up next to someone's hate speech or calls for violence.

Cynically, I suspect the carcass of Twitter will be harvested for its user data and sold to data brokers and/or despotic regimes. Fun!

@roccobarbi @dell @DaveMWilburn That’s what I mean. The people pushing the “the market will sort this out by itself” ideology are usually rather naïve about everything and don’t understand people, so I expect/hope a lot of them aren’t going to go along with a site that says “your punishment for being a Nazi is your comment being pushed lower by the algorithm” and pull their ads/money. Musk will whine and cry about “woke corporations uninterested in free speech” because that’s what the free speech grifters always do, but the puling and whinging won’t bring the advertisers back.
@GrittyLipids @dell @DaveMWilburn precisely, because in the end corporations don't do it because they really care about ideals, but because they really care about their own bottom line.
@roccobarbi @GrittyLipids @dell and as it turns out, unless you're selling mediocre pillows or weird dietary supplements, there really isn't much money to be made from fascist platforms. Who knew?
@DaveMWilburn @roccobarbi @dell Yeah, this isn’t the second iteration of the Klan, which was a lot like Amway for racists.
@GrittyLipids @roccobarbi @dell honestly though, "Amway for racists" is such a perfect analogy for a lot that's going on with people buying Mein Pillow, Trumpy Bear, the crowd-funded border wall, whatever the heck Dinesh D'Souza, Bari Weiss, or Jordan Peterson are doing at any given moment, and all the rest of the far-right grifts out there. They just routinely overestimate how attractive all that bullshit is to anyone that isn't fully invested in their cult.

@DaveMWilburn @roccobarbi @dell At least one of those crowdfund the wall guys went to jail for defrauding the idiots, which really shows what’s going on here. Plus all you have to do is spend ten minutes paying attention to these people and you hear about grifts and merch. They’re all fascists and some of them are actual Nazis, but a lot of them are also trying to make money off of it. Thing is that that’s a limited pool of suckers with a limited market share and resource pool, so they’re all fighting with each other for that audience.

Or they whitewash it and “hide their power level” so that they can try to infect normies who don’t realize all the implications of what’s being said. Peterson does that all day every day, just to name one of the most successful.

@dell
It is shocking how quickly this hate is being normalized by certain media. People who were far left just two decades ago have zero qualms about pushing ridiculous, social contagion theories about trans & bi youth on podcasts even *here* in the queer Mecca that is the Bay Area.

As a mother, I worry for my kid’s trans & bi classmates. On one hand, things have improved where I live because more kids feel comfortable coming out in elementary school. Out of my classmates growing up only one of us felt comfortable coming out before high school graduation. On the other hand, the breathtaking pace at which hard fought gains for queer folks are being rolled back is terrifying.

I think we can expect the forces of reaction to continue escalating their hate rhetoric around trans youth’s healthcare rights because they believe it is a salient issue to mobilize their base around. We must be prepared to fight back in our communities.

@HeterodoxThis @dell

A. 1000% agree @HeterodoxThis .

B. I realize the source of my confusion. I read "hateful (conduct policy)", not "(hateful conduct) policy".

@dell The entire moderation team is gone essentially
@dell what could go awry?

@dell time to leave, I think.

Leave the hellscape to Musk and his demons

@sejhemming @dell seems he’s betting on making his money to survive only off the far right and right wing libertarian base, and going toe to toe with Truth Social for that user base. What a hellscape. Im kind of starting to fault my friends who haven’t gotten onto mastodon for expecting me to stay and take even more abuse.

@hacks4pancakes @dell you did the right thing.

There is certainly no value to you in staying, especially if you are a victim of abuse.

@dell I really felt vulnerable when those policies were in place. After the infection by that unbelievable virus-man I was too frightened to stay even crouched in the corner.
@dell can we have a feature request for a dislike button here?
@dell This is alarming, and I'm weighing up my options.
