I don't think I am going to mind much if birdsite dies and I am not artificially pseudo-famous anymore. It might make it harder for me to make my side income, but I will deal somehow.

It's just really surreal to find out that people who are actually real-life famous and also had a massive impact on my life are following my shitposts - and sometimes I have had so much traffic in the feed I did not even notice it.

I feel like I would have said something smarter, or more meaningful, or posted less hamster photos. Even though people like them!

@hacks4pancakes
Less hamster photos? Why would you post less glee inducing fur balls?
@hacks4pancakes We’re bringing back the spirit of the 90s: popular people are lame.

@hacks4pancakes o.O

There was side income possible from Twitter?

h.f.s. that site was even worse than I realized.

I'll spare you any personal attacks.

This just relit a fire under something I was needing to write (but not wanting to) that I guess I need to redouble my efforts on *deeply pained sigh*.

@byterhymer Yeah, so... I go to a lot of community cons, volunteer, run clinics and stuff. I run a virtual one. It ends up costing a lot of money, so I usually try to make that back doing paid speaking engagements for companies and for-profit organizations. It is how I afford to do that stuff. So Twitter was an important marketing tool for me.

@hacks4pancakes I don't know where my 2006 REcon.cx staff badge ended up.

So, you're not unique in the having contributed to meaningful events (without getting into exhaustive lists) but twitter and marketing smdh.

Do you remember why dot-bomb happened?

Do you remember why Google was basically THE ONLY search engine which survived it?

Hint: it wasn't because they had AdSense/AdWords/Analytics.

Reinventing the flat tire is how most lose out, repeating mistakes learned the hard way, again.

@byterhymer I certainly did not claim to be unique in volunteering at conferences. It's just simple finances. Money in, money out. I have to make a living. I would not get the gigs I get without having an active, well-designed presence across a multitude of social sites. I didn't make the game, I just am forced to play it.

@hacks4pancakes "Don't hate the game, hate the game developers"?

I haven't seen that dead horse beaten in an awfully long time, congrats.

Please, good luck in catching up, but I can't follow you.

@hacks4pancakes I didn't follow on the birdsite, I didn't follow many big names... it felt, more detached.

here people feel more... human, real. And even these smalls interactions feel more... authentic, genuine.

engagement doesn't feel like a thing here... connections are a thing, actually taking an interest in someone and talking with them.

I've still gone and created a 2nd account for the bigger shitpost shenanigans... but you know what, even that is better. Apps like Husky make it effortless to switch between profiles

@dee is overwhelming for me too, honestly.

@hacks4pancakes I cannot even imagine.

this place is fab though, if I'd known... if I'd tried it seriously... I would've made this jump a long long time ago.

I only jumped just over a week ago, before the surge in migration really happened... and it's only got better (even though some of the smaller instances are really struggling to keep up)

@dee @hacks4pancakes I’ve felt more comfortable engaging in conversations here than birdsite, and have replied to things before realizing who the people on the other end were — I would’ve been too intimidated otherwise.

This feels very “small web” and reminds me of the days of communities built around small IRC servers—far less detached and bringing lots of warm nostalgia.

@hacks4pancakes hmm since ppl will remember the good hamstershots, you've probably qualified into famedome since one lives on by that memory, as long as ones doings makes ripples n waves one lives on 🤙

@hacks4pancakes had to check wtf i did remember that from 😆🤣
Sir Terry Pratchet, said by The Reaper:
No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.

Didnt wanna steal it without proper note 😊

@C0redump that ending had me in tears.
@hacks4pancakes have a thing for that guys writing 🥺 so sad he's gone
@hacks4pancakes @C0redump Terry Pratchett has that effect ... some of his observations are achingly accurate.
@grumpy4n6 @C0redump we were also reading it with the knowledge he was gone and that was the end :(
@hacks4pancakes @C0redump I listen to his audio books and they never fail to make me smile :)
@grumpy4n6 @hacks4pancakes have a bunch of books (discworld) laying in a storageroom.
Maybe should look em up n reread again 😊
@C0redump @grumpy4n6 I did this awesome talk with @munin a long time ago on Discworld and Security which we need to redo post haste, because we are both presenting as our correct genders now.
@hacks4pancakes @C0redump @grumpy4n6 oh gods yes. And -I- get to wear the witch hat this time.
@munin @hacks4pancakes @C0redump @grumpy4n6 do you have a particular witch in mind? You always did strike me as having a bit of a Wetherwax mindset, I hope you can accept that as the compliment it's meant to be 🙂
@hacks4pancakes @grumpy4n6 n us knowing that, actually makes "him" live on in a way. The ripples from him still wobbles the world through us 🥺😊
@C0redump @hacks4pancakes Imagine all of those who have yet to discover him and picks up the Colour of Magic.... May he continue to delight for centuries :)
@hacks4pancakes posting less hamster photos is never a solution! 🐹 I bet an opportunity to restore the side income will present itself with this app soon, it keeps getting popular.
@hacks4pancakes there is value in authenticity. ❤️
@hacks4pancakes Were you relying mainly on twitter for professional exposure? or you have presence in other places but didn't pay attention to other social media because twitter was working out nicely up until now?
@warlock I have no idea how my social media blew up. I really don't. I just post stuff.
@hacks4pancakes I know these feels so hard. It's nice to see people just coming together to .. be people.
@hacks4pancakes It's not "artificially pseudo-famous", though. You built your following by being real, helpful, positive, supportive, and a bunch of other adjectives that are often in short supply in social media. Plus you kick ass, both professionally and literally.
@DavidJBianco I mean, at least compared to people famous outside Twitter.
@hacks4pancakes please, there should always be more hamster photos. Always.

@hacks4pancakes NEVER STOP THE HAMSTERS

or any of the other fun stuff, really.

@hacks4pancakes You'll always have my eternal gratitude for your GCIH indexing method. Saved my life with that one :D
@hacks4pancakes mmm, I think parry gripp helped show us the power of internet hamsters. I wouldn't let regret take that part away
@hacks4pancakes you'll always be semi-famous to us...
@hacks4pancakes Always more hamsters, please!
@hacks4pancakes I feel like the movement trajectory, in the infosec vertical at least, will make instances like infosec.exchange, and to some related degree the general fediverse, required reading for anyone that wants to track that pulse and participate in those conversations. Twitter had a huge audience pool but the signal level here is already so high, I'm uncharacteristically hopeful.
@hacks4pancakes you’ve said many meaningful things, Pancakes. You’re just too humble to recognize them as such.
@hacks4pancakes I mean, yeah Taylor Swift being mutuals is kind of out there but you still post plenty of thoughtful insights.
I’m glad that you’ve shown what facets you’ve chosen to, and hope to see you be your whole self or closer to it.
@hacks4pancakes There can never be too many hamster photos...

@hacks4pancakes ... see, now I can't even remember how I started following you on the bird site... always been worth it though!

(Every famous person is famous somehow from something...)

@cpgorski thanks, glad you made it here okay!
@hacks4pancakes how do you think I feel? I’m a nobody and yet I have a few famous people (yourself included) who actually follow me. I’m not special, just another white guy who doesn’t have that much unique to say, yet people follow me. It’s a weird thing to think about.
@waynedixon social media may ultimately be our society's downfall, but it was certainly an equalizer in a lot of ways.
@hacks4pancakes it definitely is an equalizer, and it has been a great way for many to connect, and re-connect (like us), but also, quite problematic in so many ways.
@waynedixon I am pretty sure every time I have talked to one of my idols, I said something idiotic, though.
@hacks4pancakes well, yeah, I’m sure if I ever met any of my idols I would do the same. I wouldn’t be worried about saying something idiotic in front of you, because you knew me when I was a teen, and well yeah, I’m sure I said a ton of idiotic things back then.
