@jentaub
I'm getting the idea that political speech is just too upsetting for the people on this site. My whole purpose on social media is to engage with political speech.

@Stmorecowbell

Think of it this way. A content warning label serves two purposes. It protects people who don’t want their feed cluttered or upsetting and a service as a little preview of something exciting that might be hidden behind the curtain. Kind of like the quote tweet did

Also keep in mind that out of courtesy many will not boost any political tweet that doesn’t have a warning. So actually, respecting others will help get your message across and create the kind of community we want.

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell I'm hoping the liberal use of CWs will keep toxicity down...we all were a bit loud on the bird site
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell let's be honest, I've also ignored the CW and clicked through and now I can't unsee a few things...

@Eumenes @jentaub @Stmorecowbell when I first arrived, I thought "I don't need CWs, I've seen it all on Twitter", and toggled the setting to have all them open by default.

Terrible idea. I might have had it that way for two days, tops.

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell Plus it makes my feed neat and tidy so I can find the topics I am looking for quickly! Like re: lines in my inbox.
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell Agree. When I first came over to #Mastodon, I was unclear of the purpose for CW’s. But as pointed out, “boosting” is the vehicle to expand reach, and experienced users will not “boost” political, or controversial posts without a content warning.

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell I am fine with mastodon communities collaborating to establish norms but it's more important to welcome and encourage people for now, the content warning stuff is off putting to me.

This is a brand new community!

@CartyBoston @Stmorecowbell

Interesting choice of words, Carty.

This is neither a new community nor a “brand” new one. People have lived on here for years. We are the newcomers. I’m not interested in being a colonizer. We are not tourists. Space here, and yes our presence will be transferring it out, but you don’t need to shout and leave litter everywhere

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell

I used "communities" once in the toot, that's the better word.

I am encouraging people to be patient and I will be patient myself, I love that you are posting here, thank you

@CartyBoston @Stmorecowbell

I hear you! We will all adapt and grow

@jentaub @CartyBoston @Stmorecowbell wouldn't we, the Twitter disapora, have wanted to curtail the worst of the toxic interlopers back there?

@capemaydave @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

of course! but in general dictating how others post is less effective than simply following people with similar perspective on what's appropriate.

@CartyBoston @capemaydave @Stmorecowbell

keep in mind that no one is dictating what we do.

@CartyBoston @capemaydave @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

We came to THEIR house.

You can complain all you want about how silly you think it is, but if they want you to take your shoes off and leave them by the door, then it's a good idea to do it.

And if you REALLY hate it, then make your own instance, with your own rules, and don't complain about lack of reach.

@damianaswan @capemaydave @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

Done! it's https://mastodon.roundpond.net y'all are welcome.

I don't care about reach.

mastodon.roundpond.net

This is a lovingly run mastodon server. High performance, high love, low bro, no hate, no ads, $0/mo. "a happy cat using their phone for social media, cartoon style with vivid colors”

Mastodon hosted on mastodon.roundpond.net
@damianaswan @CartyBoston @jentaub @Stmorecowbell there are things I said and heard in the locker room and on the bench during the game before this picture was taken that I would not say or want to hear while this picture was taken - public posts are the widest of audiences
@jentaub @CartyBoston @Stmorecowbell I was initially dubious about content wraps but now see the benefit massively, for well-being, mental health and actually could be an effective dissemination tool for journalism and politics. Give them a go!
@jentaub @CartyBoston @Stmorecowbell - it’s going to be interesting to see how federation enables new patterns of community formation, and resolves fears about digital scarcity and potential for cultural conflict. There is enormous capacity for peaceful expansion and diversity here, with equality between servers ensured by technology.
@CartyBoston @jentaub @Stmorecowbell I found tht thinking of them as a subject line really helped. Makes scrolling quick and easy, and will be a useful Metadata tool we didn't have on that other site.

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell
I also think that the background toxicity of the corporate social media apps have given a different meaning to "content warning" than what the norms are here.

I find the *use* of CWs here to be more consistent with content *wrappers*, not necessarily *warnings*.

People wrap content for many reasons - to avoid screen clutter, consideration for other users, avoid drama/attention, hide NSFW, etc.

That changed my perspective, though YMMV.

@buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell content warning ≠ pejorative connotation
@buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell The Content Wrapper actually makes a quick and handy metadata label and is highly useful from that standpoint alone.

@ElleFormidable @buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

But it's a metadata label that's not searchable in any way, correct?

@mara @buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell No idea. I use hashtags but I don’t know.

@ElleFormidable @buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

I tried to do some research on that yesterday, and I found that hashtags in the visible part of the CW were not searchable, but they are in the hidden part.

@mara @ElleFormidable @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

Seems like a great way to have a conversation without attracting a ton of unwanted attention ;)

Hashtags in content warnings don't work · Issue #699 · mastodon/mastodon

Currently, hashtags in the content warning field just behave like plain text. Here's an example. This is inconvenient if, for example, a user wants to hide their #introductions post behind a co...

GitHub

@ElleFormidable @buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell

I saw that, too; yes, very unclear.

But it's pretty easy to test. I made a post with a hashtag in the visible part, and found it didn't get searched. Then made a post with a hashtag in the hidden part, and found it did get searched.

(I also found the best way to search hashtags was not with the search box, but just using an URL in my browser that ended with /tags/desiredhashtag)

#hashtags

@mara @buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell If you repeat the hashtag in the body of the post which is hidden it’s searchable. At least the test I just did seemed to indicate that.
@buddhabound This must be the case because I saw someone with a Food CW and the post under was literally "I love nachos." I get that there are people with eating disorders, but I find it hard to believe that bland statements like "I love nachos" warrant a real content warning.
@buddhabound @jentaub @Stmorecowbell A science communicator had responded to a tweet about a journalist recommending that other journalist utilize the CW feature for their stories with one word - "yikes".
I asked, "Why yikes?: and they responded with "He's literally asking everybody to censor their own stories."
My response: "That may be what it sounds like but that's not what it is."
She blocked me.
So, there is clearly a messaging problem

@JayAdan @jentaub @Stmorecowbell
Sounds like a receiving problem, since you tried to clarify the messaging and the person blocked you. Weird.

But, that interaction also seems pretty consistent with the toxicity on commercialized social media that we've all been convinced is "the way". And, honestly, those people won't last here, because they're going to silo themselves off and hate it.

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell 95% of my tweets on Twitter were political. That is obviously my primary interest.

@PBall @jentaub @Stmorecowbell So therefore you don't need content wrappers? People see your toots when they're boosted, whether they follow you or not. People will be more willing to boost your toots if you put content wrappers on it.

Why do you dislike them, is the real question? What's the downside?

@Stmorecowbell @jentaub Yes, I’ve refrained from boosting things I thought should have more attention, because they didn’t have a CW. “Content Heading” might be a better description of something that covers sports scores, movie spoilers, political conflict, climate catastrophe, and horrors of war.
There are those, who might say this is “too precious,” who may want to recreate the “outrage economy” from Twitter, over here (knowingly or not). Outrage sells, and is addictive.
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell I enjoy political discussions. I have no problem with CW. As @jentaub pointed out, it is a signal to me that it is something to take a look at. I am enjoying reading things here. I was angry all the time at the bird site. Staying there and feeling that way is on me.
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell However, as soon as 10% or more of your feed is cloaked it becomes an irritant rather than anything like a feature. To survive it should be reserved for things other than politics (the precise thing, at certain points, that 95% of the people will be here to talk about)—like grisly tank-explosion videos. For those it can be genuinely useful.
@peterquince @Stmorecowbell @jentaub But you can check the box in your personal app’s settings that shows all content by default. Then nothing is cloaked and you can see everything, everywhere, all at once. 😀
@mosugerman nice reference to the best #movie of the year until I see #WakandaForever

@mosugerman @Stmorecowbell @jentaub That sounds like a box I would like to check! I’m on the web. Do I count as having a personal app with settings?

(And to muse upon, mildly: it very definitely the Best of All Possible Worlds that the default is not the other way around, or that it is not a setup choice instead of a default?)

@mosugerman @peterquince @Stmorecowbell @jentaub I am on the Mastadon app on the iPhone and have checked the box to expand CW posts via the preferences section via the web interface. I still see the CWs so wondering if the app is not recognizing the web setting.

@mosugerman @Stmorecowbell @jentaub I think this only refers to the Content Warning. I would love to be less sheltered from users on other servers, and also to have an easier time going through the act of following them.

It seems inevitable that someone will make a Mastodon app that puts all of that in the background, and that everyone who is not superhardcore will use that app.

@peterquince you can change the settings on your feed so that CW are automatically expanded, to save your irritation. Also - 95% of people here to talk about politics - which politics? US, UK, EU, Uganda…

@touchingfreedom I don’t think my assertion that Mastodon is being flooded with ex-Twitter users eager to discuss the U.S. midterms is insensitive or insufficiently broad-minded. I’m pretty sure it’s straightforwardly factual.

And, of course, like me, many of those users have a lot of other interests, too. I listen solely to non-U.S. news podcasts, for instance—and, dang it all, U.S. politics do seem pretty worth discussing right now :)

@jentaub @Stmorecowbell A consideration here should (imo) be the nature of this platform - it's federated, which in theory shld mean common general rules but variations in some areas. Example: my instance (15k+ users) has 8 clear rules. The rule on CW states that it should be used for content that is explicit and disturbing. Other instances require CW for pretty much everything politics, religion, social issues, etc. Many users openly post politics on my instance but it's always respectful.
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell wow. I'm so glad to stumble on posts like this. It's nice to get the tips before making rude mistakes.
@jentaub @Stmorecowbell This exactly and even now that I know I can copy the link to the un protected toot and put it in my toot with a CW I still wish more would be considerate.
