@Sharkastic @betaburns It wasn't so much intended as a joke as a play on the similarity of how #Mastodon and #MastoDaoine sound.

Also, @shivers has pointed out that it also sounds like #MeasDoDhaoine, which roughly translates as "respect for people".

So it's got a couple of nice little rings to it that seemed to work for eh, people!

@Sharkastic 'Daoine' [dee-nee] means people or folk (duine [dinnah] is person). It's one of those words that people who've been through Irish schooling will probably still remember, even if they were awful at Irish. Mastodee-nee is is kinda cute (as cute as anything with 'masto' at the front can get!). I hope the # can bring in rather than exclude...

@betaburns @Sharkastic "Folk" is such a better warmer word than people too innit? I'm not an etymologist but I think there's a hint of "tribe" in "daoine" too, rather than it just being "people" as in a bland category term, it suggests community etc.

Well, #TootsDéDanann is a play on Tuatha Dé Danann, in Irish mythology an ancient race of gods, warriors, kings & queens, poets, healers, bards & other beings who have supernatural powers. In #MastoDaoine , 'daoine' is a common Irish word that means people (plural of 'duine'/person, but also alludes to us as folk, a tribe. Feel welcome, and vote away!

@Lilith @betaburns I learned from @lucymichael the other day that such a use of Camel case, like #MastoDaoine, is necessary for text reader software to recognize the need to pronounce them as separate words. So it’s a more accessible version too!
