25 mins left to get your vote in on renaming #IrishTwitter for the fediverse! There are 3 heats currently live (hit this toot and scroll up!). We may be forced to hold a 4th heat before the final due to some very smart late entries.

Renaming #IrishTwitter Heat 1 winner is... 🥁🥁🥁

#IrishMastodon !

Simple, straightforward, conservative. Beat romantic #Hibernodon , sexy #Éiredon and my favourite, the frolicking #Paddyderm with a neck to spare. But is it strong enough to beat the Heat 2 and 3 contenders?

Renaming #IrishTwitter Heat 2 winner is hot on the heels of #IrishMastodon . The winner is 🥁🥁🥁

#TootsDéDanann !

Swirly and mystical, this is a surprise win for the prehistory fans. Unfortunately, crowd favourite #MastO'Don was never really a goer, getting bogged down with that oirish apostrophe hanging over the Don like a maga cap. #Ireladon and #Irishodon non-runners.

Result in from Heat 3 of Renaming #IrishTwitter and its a winner alright! Beating the pack at a canter, odds on favourite winner is 🥁🥁🥁

#Mastodaoine !

Easily beating #Meastodon , this may impact on the holding of a 4th wild card heat. #TootfaidhÁrLá placed respectably 2nd but sadly, always the runner-up.

#BleedinMasto subject to a stewards enquiry for unwarranted discussion of coddle.

Final poll to rename #IrishTwitter will launch tomorrow with our 3 winners:
#IrishMastodon
#TootsDéDanann and
#Mastodaoine

Let me know if you'd like a wildcard added or a 4th heat with some of the other late contenders like Meastodaoine, Packoderms, Feckoderm, MáisTúDána.

G'night!

Here it is, the final poll to rename #IrishTwitter as we seek shelter on the welcoming plains of @mastodonie . These options are the winners of our 3 previous heats. I acknowledge the later suggestions that came through - some of them weren't different enough to warrant a new heat, some were exceptionally niche, all were appreciated.

Give it a lash!

RESULT! There was never really any doubt but nearly 600 of you had your say so it looks like we can legitimately use #MastoDaoine from now on to locate the arrivals from #IrishTwitter.

Credit to @rasherst / @osslate for coining #MastoDaoine / spreading it among the masses.

I hope #TootsDéDanann ( @Sharr0w ) and #Hibernodon ( @janwwbosch ) find a worthy use, they were both 💯

I hope this ends mention of the hellsite from me.

@betaburns I'm guessing that the winner is some kind of Irish language joke? Can you explain to the baffled?

@Sharkastic @betaburns It wasn't so much intended as a joke as a play on the similarity of how #Mastodon and #MastoDaoine sound.

Also, @shivers has pointed out that it also sounds like #MeasDoDhaoine, which roughly translates as "respect for people".

So it's got a couple of nice little rings to it that seemed to work for eh, people!

@Sharkastic 'Daoine' [dee-nee] means people or folk (duine [dinnah] is person). It's one of those words that people who've been through Irish schooling will probably still remember, even if they were awful at Irish. Mastodee-nee is is kinda cute (as cute as anything with 'masto' at the front can get!). I hope the # can bring in rather than exclude...
@betaburns @Sharkastic "Folk" is such a better warmer word than people too innit? I'm not an etymologist but I think there's a hint of "tribe" in "daoine" too, rather than it just being "people" as in a bland category term, it suggests community etc.
@rasherst @betaburns @Sharkastic I am definitely completely alone in this but I absolutely hate people using folk or worst, folks. To me it comes across as gratingly twee.
@sineadredmond @rasherst @Sharkastic I use it all the time, always have! Not sure if it's a Tipp thing or a my family thing or a working in pubs thing...
@sineadredmond @rasherst @betaburns @Sharkastic guilty as charged! I use “folks” all the time 😂 “hey Daoine” may now become the vernacular. I interact with a lot of migrants so may have to add (folks/people) at the end for clarity though!
@betaburns @rasherst @osslate @Sharr0w @janwwbosch great, now can we please change the ridiculous name for posting?
Just FYI, #MastoDaoine also works in Gàidhlig.
@HighlandLawyer one more step towards the League of Independent Gaelic Nations...
