Someone reminded me that I shouldn't find "people to follow" here. Instead, I should find people to *have conversations with.*

Unlearning 14 years of Twitter terminology and mindset isn't an overnight thing. But it's important to shift how I look at this space.

Because this space is special.

@killyourfm
I’ve found most of the folk who get weirdly angry about it are really just suffering from having been pushed into some unhealthy habits from Twitter and other places.

It’s fantastic to come here not have that β€œoh no what now” dread when I see the notification bell light up!

@wiredfire Thanks for pointing out yet another unhealthy side-effect of using Twitter: the anxiety! It adds up, and it absolutely screws with our mental health.

@killyourfm
It’s alarming how easily it all invaded our thinkmeats and eroded our calm without us realising until we were doomscrolling for the next aggression.

I’m thrilled the whole debacle is starting to get some more people thinking about the mental health impacts of it all too.

@killyourfm Agreed with that sentiment and then went & followed you. πŸ˜‚ Old habits...
@killyourfm great to see you here!
@beyond9thousand Thanks! Do I know you by another name on birdsite?
@killyourfm hahaha, sorry for the confusion. Just been following your activity since I started using Linux. But yes, the username is the same
@killyourfm I'm really loving browsing the Local timeline for this very reason: you suddenly find a random post that tickles you, you answer, and a conversation can indeed happen with someone new. That's something I never saw happening on Twitter
@lminiero @killyourfm The more I’m reading and leaning about this platform, the more I attribute this to the absence of quote tweeting here, and how that mandates conversation (talking directly to someone), versus talking around/above/away from/or even at someone.

@killyourfm I opened a Twitter account in 2009 and shut it down in 2020 for a mental health "reset". It felt good to purge it all.

I then reopened it in August last year, and decided to use it in "read only" mode. I just follow accounts for news of topics that interest me, but without attracting the engagement of the bots and angry mob.

With Mastodon though I'm going to join in and hope it's a more positive experience, the kind of thing I originally thought Twitter would be.

@killyourfm It’s come a bit full circle for me. I originally joined Twitter in 2007 and used it primarily for conversations for years. Something shifted along the way (either in the service, me, or both) and it became more of a way to consume rather than converse. I’m quite happy to be back to conversations here!
@emilydash I have a hunch your experience is very common, and has something to do with algorithms...
@killyourfm I've never really used Twitter, and I'm also new in Fediverse. It's really special here and I'm still getting familiar with this place. I'll try to have more conversations!
@killyourfm I always lurk on social media and never post. Gonna try to engage more, thanks for the post!
@xonic38 I hope engaging pays off for you. It's a little more time-consuming, but it really does feel like the early web to me, and that's a great feeling.
@killyourfm ooh. You had me at vinyl obsessions. 😍 instant follow! I collect film soundtracks, mostly on vinyl.

@killyourfm I find that attitude exhausting. It's possible to follow, without interaction, and still not be like Twitter.

Someone might post interesting links I want to see, without me needing to have a *conversation* about them every time. Or someone posts art I like, maybe even buy, but I don't need to always *say* something.

It can be different without being exhausting. Keeping *conversation* as a hard norm risks excluding some of us who aren't always very verbal. Just saying.

@herzleid Totally valid viewpoint and approach! Please note that I intentionally used "I" instead of "we" for this very reason.

I'm thinking outloud here, not pressuring everyone to adopt my mentality.

@herzleid
As introvert who has ADHD, I totally agree
@killyourfm
@killyourfm this is a super excellent point. I just had like this paradigm shift when I read your post. Whooosh. It’s so right. Thank you for sharing that. Cheers and sending you hopes for endless fulfilling conversations.
@killyourfm
Yes, indeed.
To be extended perhaps that there are people that hold a conversation in just emoji, reactions, or very delayed responses. Which may
look like they are just "following" but are engaging as best they can and when they can.
It's not that ableism doesn't exist on the fediverse , but it's less common and what make this a nicer space than places where it's the default.
Let's be careful not to lose that

@coth Well said. Value on the Fediverse isn't attributed to lengths of replies, or replies at all.

It's just my personal mission to have more meaningful conversations when I do choose to engage.

@killyourfm
Absolutely.
Zero criticism implied.
Hope you make those worthwhile connections

@killyourfm
I didn't like it on twitter, however now I realize that I'm used to unhealthy habits after all. It's difficult, like giving up any other addiction, like smoking

@ltinuviel As an ex-smoker (who still thinks about it every other day) I feel this.

Maybe it's because, like smoking, doing stuff like doomscrolling involves these repeatable and physical gestures.

I think half the addiction of smoking is the physical action of it. You know?

@killyourfm
I've read somewhere that scrolling releases dopamine
@ltinuviel IIRC it's the "hit" of the likes, retweets, and various fake validations that resemble a sort of social currency.
@killyourfm there are so many characters and I feel incredibly curious about the app instead of reactive about the content. I forgot the joy of learning a new app/technology.
@killyourfm so true and I think that's what I'm loving. Instagram used to have a really lovely community vibe where you could properly connect and have conversations but lost that around the time Meta bought it. It's nice to be on a platform that feels like a place for conversation again

@killyourfm I quickly found myself weirdly obsessed with # I follow vs # following me then thought "What ARE YOU DOING?!?!"

Took a deep breath and let go of that dreck. Time to explore. :)

@killyourfm , we're all unlearning bad habits together. How wonderful!!
