Four days ago: huh this place is empty. Ooh I can follow three parked accounts

Yersterday morning: maybe 10% or so of the people I follow regularly on the bird site are here

Now: huh think it's fully half or more are here

It's a flood peeps. Never thought I'd see anything like it

@Pwnallthethings I hope the momentum keeps up! I'd be interested to see the activity in a month or so.
@thewrightmatt @Pwnallthethings I had the same thought but I could see it having this initial burst of enthusiasm followed by a lot of people dropping out when they can't figure it out, followed by another burst of enthusiasm as the word spreads about how to get the most out of it.
@tom4okstate @thewrightmatt I initially thought so too, but then the bird site is going through a car crash, and it'll not stop car crashing for a while I suspect. By the time it firesales off, suspect a lot of the key folks in networks there will have settled elsewhere
@Pwnallthethings @thewrightmatt one thing appears certain at this point, Musk isn't going to stop giving people ample reason to leave or stay gone if they've already left.
@Pwnallthethings same though mine is about 30% , tech Twitter is clearly portable at this rate of change

@Pwnallthethings A LOT of prominent verified users on twitter are setting their names to Elon Musk knowing they're going to get suspended, advertisers have already started abandoning the platform, Elon is begging for some of the employees he fired to come back - so it's obvious Twitter is not going to last into 2023

I very much expect to lock my twitter account by end of year and just use this instead

@Pwnallthethings
https://pruvisto.org/debirdify is also showing a constant influx of accounts I really would have missed. If sustainable, it will be quite remaining.
Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@Pwnallthethings This is so much fun. I thought starting over at a new site would make me feel old and tired but itโ€™s oddly invigorating.
@Pwnallthethings This hit me scrolling this site this morning. Other than the Sports-centric accounts I follow not being here, my Mastodon feed is now almost indistinguishable from my twitter feed.
@Pwnallthethings agree and that includes you since I just realized you're here and I followed you back on the bird site!!
@Pwnallthethings Feels like this morning my feed was basically you and @popehat and now it's actually doing a lot. Moving fast!
@Pwnallthethings I think the threat of losing access to unbiased information is driving the shift, especially in the infosec realm. The bonus is we're no longer a product.
@Pwnallthethings Such a great start, here's hoping it's still as alive (or more) a couple of months from now
@danny I was skeptical before. But it seems to have enough folks to be self-sustaining, especially with a few cosmetic fixes that the devs seem to be already considering
@Pwnallthethings @danny I need to see a little less of this ๐Ÿ˜‚ but in terms of function and size itโ€™s feeling like early bird app
@lilstevie @Pwnallthethings @danny Iโ€™m glad to see itโ€™s not just my instance.
@Pwnallthethings @danny We (the collective we that care about things like the platforms we use) always knew that the future would be an open and decentralized platform. The problem was also getting the network efforts going. The recent exodus was the black swan moment we needed. Reminds me of various social migrations like Slashdot -> Fark -> Digg -> Reddit or MySpace->FB.
@eclipxe @Pwnallthethings @danny TBH this mass migration should be freaking out Meta. If this could happen to Twitter, why wouldn't it happen to FB/Insta. The number of ads on those services is SO HIGH that all it'd take is a spark IMO
@Pwnallthethings we have a decentralized social network if we can keep it
@Pwnallthethings My experience improved significantly since more people like you that I follow Twitter started to pop up here. Familiar timeline is everything.
@ygalanter @Pwnallthethings I know.. I feel better about it today๐Ÿ˜
@Pwnallthethings Pretty remarkable! Never felt the bird site had the room for little old me. Seems here itโ€™s more small-d democratic.
@Pwnallthethings timing the takeover with Musk and his allies parroting of Putin talking points and spreading tabloid political misinformation makes going elsewhere an easy call.
@Pwnallthethings direct network effects developing organically in real-time. Simply remarkable to witness
@DataDrivenMD @Pwnallthethings there'll come a point - soon? - when we haven't got time, in our allotted time for social media, to go and check up on the birdsite.
@StrangeNoises @DataDrivenMD @Pwnallthethings Yup - the personal attention crunch is real. I made this exact comment yesterday. I've noticed I'm spending waaaay less time on the hellsite because I'm enjoying Masto so much.
@kurtsh @StrangeNoises @DataDrivenMD @Pwnallthethings Same--spending my time here instead, mostly making new friends who all seem truly nice. Like for real. It's downright uplifting!
@DataDrivenMD @Pwnallthethings did you do the blue check on your own?
@heikospecht
Try adding  (with the colons) to the end or your display name.
@heikospecht @Pwnallthethings i can verify that i am who i say i am, yes. It's exactly as valid as Elon's version, but free
@DataDrivenMD @Pwnallthethings sometimes the cow paths pave themselves
@Pwnallthethings old enough to remember the, mostly bed, of MySpace, and of course Friendster. This is how it is starting to feel
@Nadinabbott @Pwnallthethings I used Google+ in the early days, and the only way it feels similar to that is the visibility control options(kinda like circles)
@Nadinabbott @Pwnallthethings Twitter is going down MUCH MUCH faster than either of those networks ever did. Also the news on Meta's layoffs LOL. seems like there's a revolt against these techbro billionaires underway now.

@antonioserrata @Pwnallthethings I think so

Am still on meta, but itโ€™s not the primary network. Itโ€™s for family, a few friends. Itโ€™s a useless place for oh OSINT, for example. It still has its use for local wildfires

@Pwnallthethings itโ€™s the great bird migration of 2022!
@Pwnallthethings just goes to show that the mood for change was there and I can only speak for myself but I was sick of seeing the usual hateful crap being spewed by the usual bad faith actors I've come to expect it from, hopefully mastodon will be a fresh start

@Pwnallthethings

๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฅฐ critical mass is a thing. It feels so good
