#ActivityPub is to #Linux

#Fediverse network is to Linux users/community

Software which implemented ActivityPub is to Linux distros. Examples:
- Mastodon is to Ubuntu
- Pleroma is to Debian
- MissKey is to Linux Mint
- Friendica is to Pop_OS

You don't stop using a refrigerator because the brand you bought broke down immediately. You find a new brand.

It's the same with Linux and the Fediverse.

@youronlyone I have an account on one of friendica's instances (libranet.de) and their UI doesn't allow one to edit or delete posts. Is that true or does anyone know how I can do this?
@youronlyone I tried to create an account on Bookwyrm and it required email verification but I've never received the email. Is there a way to login or sign in without creating a whole different account? Like can I access via this account?

@caffeneko Probably delayed?

I don't think the BookWyrm platform supports using off-site Fediverse accounts for login. Though it federates.

I have a separate account under BookWyrm, and I 2-way follow it with my Mastodon account.

@caffeneko Probably that instance only. Or, something's going on with the instance.
@youronlyone Thank you, that's really helpful for a newbie like me.

@robriley I'm glad it helped. ^_^

Feel free to ask the community if you have questions. If we don't know the answer, we retweet/boost so more of the wider community gets to see a post. ^_^

@youronlyone thanks you, i appreciate it
@youronlyone Hello, me again! 😀 I am a self-employed English language teacher. If I want to make more people aware of my services, which part of the fediverse would be the most appropriate to use?

@robriley Good question!

I'm not aware of a service dedicated to promoting services. What I've seen so far is word-of-mouth.

Basically, interacting with other people, establishing your account/identity, and post about your services and cool stuff (achievements, promos) about it.

Your followers may boost your posts which their own followers will see (and their followers who don't follow you can also choose to boost).

You know, that's a good idea, a place or listing of services.

@youronlyone A fediverse platform, LinkedInesque, but non-corporate. Co-ops, freelancers, self-employed and small local business. Where people could search for services they were looking for more easily, rather than always going to the big corps.
@robriley Yeah! Gives more exposure to micro, small, and medium enterprises, especially the freelancers and self-employed. (Majority of which, at least from observation, are on Facebook, trying to fight their way to be seen.)
@youronlyone Exactly! I was thinking something like a cross between Fiverr & LinkedIn, I'd make the platform myself if I had such skills.
Oh i see, scammers can offer users $5 dollar jobs but they have to take the $50 "training program" to be 'considered' .  A smaller scale linkedin. :)
@youronlyone oh, now I have a lot of new services to explore in the next days. Thanks for this overview!
@iks77 You're welcome. 'Glad to have helped. ^_^
@youronlyone I continue to be upset notbody has made a Tumblr and Livejournal clone

@shlee For LiveJournal, wouldn't WriteAs / WriteFreely fit?

I've forgotten what makes LJ unique. ^_^;;

@youronlyone

Do not forget that:
#PeerTube also supports live streams
Concerning podcasts #CastoPod (@Castopod) is a way cooler and feature-packed version of #Funkwhale.

@tommi @Castopod

Ooh, thank you for sharing! I wasn't aware of that #PeerTube feature; and this is the first time I heard of #Castopod!

@youronlyone isn't "writeAs" is actually writefreely? I thought the former is a SAAS based on the latter.
Where's #friendica?

@grin Actually, yeah, it's the other way around. Hehe.

But I'll edit/add it in the list.

re: Friendica, it's the first one.

@youronlyone help me to understand! As far as I see "write.as" was/is a hosted service with no open source code or commmunity install, then they have released "#writefreely" as the server hostable by anyone, so "writeas" never have been a #communityServer (and there is ony one writeas, the #commercial one; it was/is a closed source company hosted #AP compatible service.)
That is what I have believed.
(Maybe there could be a list of commercial AP compatible #closedSource services...)

@grin Oh. AFAIK, at least when the project started, it is open source.

I think later, Write.As / WriteFreeley split, with the latter as the software and the former as the service. But, if I'm not mistaken, the Write.As code is the same as the WriteFreely code.

Think of it as WordPress. "Wordpress.com" is the hosted service, while "wordpress.org" (or simply Wordpress) is the code.

You can use Write.As for free, or one of the other servers, like https://th.hashi.icu

@youronlyone
"wordpress.org" is a website, "wordpress" is the software. 😆

th.hashi.icu uses _writefreely_ (see the bottom of the page).

And yes, I am sure write.as uses "writefreely" code plus their own internal closed-source improvements.

I hope my suggestions help to improve your list! 🙂

@youronlyone re: frioendica, oh sorry, you're right, I wanted to ask why aren't they grouped by type! 😬 😉
@youronlyone thanks for this! Checking out bookwyrm and Lemmy right now, and hoping that pixelfed’s iOS app leaves beta soon
