Am I alone in thinking that it would be confusing and unnecessary to have a "save for later" feature in the form of "favourite" as well as "save for later" in the form of "bookmark" side by side?
@Gargron yes because i dont use favorite to mean "save for later"
@dankwraith @Gargron yeah glitchsoc (which i don't use on this server fwiw) has a bookmark feature and i really like it. i bookmark very few posts; i _like_ a vast majority of the posts i see
@er1n @Gargron yep i use glitchsoc bookmarks for extra special posts and i love it, i like that only i can see them too.
@dankwraith @er1n @Gargron +1 to that ( when i'm on h.t and have glitch. over here i just... don't save for later )

@dankwraith @Gargron I also do not use favourite to mean "save for later."

Another instance I used to be active on actually forked the original code to add a "save for later" function, which:

a) acted more like a bookmark function

b) didn't send a notification to the person whose toot you were saving

I used it sparingly because I was using it for toots I truly wanted to save for later, rather than "favourite," which I mostly use as a sort of "thumbs up" acknowledgement of a good post.

@Gargron That's what I thought at first but there's a point somewhere.

Favourites are often used as "likes" or "loves" instead of saving for later I think

@Gargron favourites aren't really a "save for later" though, those get sent to someone
@Gargron I'm firmly in the camp of those who would like the two separated. I'd like to be able to give people affirmation by favouriting (or better, liking, because favourite is too extreme) their posts and I'd like to separately save some things to read for later.
@Gargron The first one, liking, is by nature public. Saving or bookmarking for later reading is I think something one can do privately.

@Gargron „save for later“ will be a nice Feature, if it‘s used to save a draft of a toot.

And nothing else.

@Gargron yeah just bookmark will do I really find them useful to not lose / miss something I am following (like news) and I am collecting sources to write what I think of afterward
@Gargron I think that a crucial difference in implementation is that a bookmark should not be visible for anyone else. Other than that, the name suggests different functions; newcomers might not consider the possibility of using favorite to save something, because they think it is just a "rank".
Not saying having both (or either) is necessary. There are plenty of solutions for bookmarking general internet links.
@Gargron bookmarks helps us, it helps us save news articles we want to read later
@Gargron favorite is for long term reference. Bookmark is for short term. And bookmarking a toot won't show up in notifications, while favouriting it would.
@Gargron Used the favourite icon to bookmark on Twitter for many years until Twitter prostituted the platform with “like”.
@Gargron
I think it would be a good distinction, like to like, bookmark for future reference.
@Gargron I use "favorite" as favorite and bookmark. A bookmark without notification would great.
@Gargron some of us are habituated to positively reacting to posts by favouriting them. We bookmark the stuff we want for future references.
It's not redundant. Please add. 🌺
@Gargron I also use favorites as likes, we're humans, we like to show appreciation, and would be nice to have a like button and a bookmark button as separate functions.
@Gargron I'd use the hell out of a bookmark button. Right now my save-for-later's get lost among my I-appreciate-your-worthwhile-post's
@Gargron They're both important. We often like posts for various reasons. But having an equally easily accessible feature for bookmarks will help in bookmarking important things.
@Gargron what would be the difference though. Isnt both the same like for future reference 🤔

@Gargron I use the favourite button as
1. a form of "I like your toot"
2. acknowledge that I have read the toot

bookmarks I would use to save for later

@Gargron

I already bookmark threads I really like, the old-time way. But if people want an in-house version of it, why not?

(I'm super-vain, so I hope it'll allow me to fave my own ramblings, too. :D)

@Gargron my preferred system is Likes to acknowledge to the poster your feelings and Bookmarks to save things for yourself
@Gargron for me it would make total sense
@Gargron i definitely would like to be able to separate likes/favourites from bookmarked toots. it's hard to find articles I'd like to read later when they're buried in starred favourites, but I'd like to validate posts by giving them a star!

@Gargron I don't favourite things to come back to them, I favourite them because I like them.

I use bookmarks on twitter for stuff that looks interesting, but I don't have time to look at in detail yet, or stuff that I definitely don't like at all, but still want to be able to refer to later for some reason.

@Gargron In addition to bookmark feature please add end to end encrypted DMs.

@Gargron
Favorite is acknowledgement
BM is saving for later use.

All fav are definitely not BMs.

@Gargron Given that after three readings of that toot I'm not quite getting the different features, I would say you are not alone.

Are these "🌟 fave" vs. "📝 note for later"?

@Gargron it would be useful as easier to transit from twitter to here.
@Gargron Bookmark would be a really good idea.
Today I bookmark using a bookmark group that I share with my wife on WhatsApp
@Gargron
I'd suggest putting the bookmark/save for later option in the [...]-menu, and not just next to the star.
It is presumably less often you want to (perhaps temporarily) save a toot to:
- read a long thread / big linked document
- respond properly later
- follow a debate you're undecided about
- look at when you have a big display / headphones / privacy
@Gargron
This also keeps the more immediate and positive type of interaction the norm. This isn't a forum where people are expected to dig up three year old threads to answer their questions, after all.
@Gargron personally favourites are not something I have ever or would ever use for saving content, not sure I would use a bookmarks feature but would see this as kinda separate

@tobypinder @Gargron I think favorite (star) is more commonly used as a replacement for "liking" a thing, and ensuring the author gets the feedback.

I'm not sure how many people use favorite to get back to say a link they found useful and but wanted to look at later...

@seven @Gargron I think at this point "favourite" is indistinguishable from "like" yeah
@Gargron right now I use favorite as save for later and sometimes just to notify that I read the response (when reply is not required)
@Gargron I'm confused listening to this. Sorry 😄
@Gargron instead of bookmark save for offline is Nother good way to view the content offline when in need. If they r web pages switch on the data or network and continue
@Gargron On the contrary, I think Bookmarking is a good idea
@Gargron instead of side-by-side, why not build tools to manage your favorites? I've always wanted a feature where anything I save gets pushed into a queue and then I have to either archive and label it, or take some sort of action, to remove it from the queue.
@Gargron if there's one thing i learned in web dev over the years, it's that people want to have at least 3 different ways of 'save for later' / 'bookmarking' in their web apps.
@lain @Gargron I feel bad because I use stuff exactly like this.

Favorites for friends, bookmarks for interesting stuff, whatever the third option is for "Respond to this at some point when you have more energy to do it."
@Gargron yes so many people have asked me about this feature. its immensely popular. there is a ton of times I see a link or a post and I want to get back to it but don’t necessarily want them to think I liked it.
@liaizon @Gargron fwiw, glitch-soc already implemented that feature: https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/features/bookmarks/
