S.F. to lay off ‘community ambassadors,’ including those assisting Marshall Elementary

All of the ambassadors still had job agreements with the city. They say they were given a month notice and no explanation for the lay offs.

This is a terrible loss to the city (and probably violates employment law, which means it may not even save money after the inevitable legal complaints).

Community ambassadors improve civic life. I'm always happy to see them out when I am walking in the city.

You can contact the Mayor's office about this, as I did using the info here: https://www.sf.gov/profile--daniel-lurie I called and immediately spoke with a human.

TIL this about astronaut Victor Glover, from a March 31 article: Every Monday, he listens to "Whitey on the Moon" on the way to work at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. I’d forgotten about this Gil Scott-Heron piece!

If you're going on a trip, have a bunch of food in your freezer, & are worried about power outages while you're gone, here's a simple trick to know if there was one.

Take a container half full of water & prop it up to freeze at an angle. Then set it flat normally.

If you come home & there's a diagonal block of ice, all is well.

If there are no frozen slopes in the water, your food defrosted & refroze & you should throw it out & fully sanitize the freezer & fridge.

Bad news for mask-wearing, covid-avoiding folks like me who are re-entering the US at SFO. Global Entry has switched to facial scanning at a distance, requiring mask removal while walking through.

I was lucky, it was only a minute or two, but it caught me by surprise. No alternate approach was offered.

Maybe using non-Global Entry lanes would give you a slower way through, and you could just lower your mask briefly (while holding your breath) for the person checking passports? Not sure.
