It probably says unspeakable things about about my psyche that my characters are starting The Sex Scene with a cup of #tea & a biscuit. I keep trying to type "throbbing member" but end up giggling & slinking off to research London's sewers out of sheer embarrassment.
It's all heading #VictoriaWood -wards fast
Um, I've, um, given all my characters names starting with G. Help me find a new name for minor character "Gilmour Glover" please!
It's #Year1819 #Regency; GG's a well-networked wealthy lawyer & MP for Clackmannanshire (though he'll never go there). He's monosyllablic & goes out to dinner only where he knows he'll be well fed. Random fact - he knows a lot about silver hallmarks.
Very happy to credit the best offer. Just - no names beginning with G!
This is a Concealed Shoe.
Round about 1820 someone poured her hopes, good wishes, prayers into this well-worn boot & hid it on top of a wallhead in her house. In a lovely domestic example of geomancy, she stored her good luck token for the future.
This concealed shoe wasn't hidden with any accompanying items (bottles, ribbons, bits of bone etc) though many were.
And 200 years later, I get to marvel at it.
Down the river to #Greenwich to see ships & fans, pies & pints.
A good day.
How meta is this? At the #BritishMuseum to study #GeorgeScharf and here's the British Museum by Scharf.
Having fun.
Mrs F sells her jewels—part 2
Part 1 [https://bityl.co/Fq36] looked at why I couldn’t send Mrs F across town to a jeweller & needed to find a local one.
I don’t know #London well so I didn’t use a modern map: roads get renamed, or indeed demolished [https://bityl.co/Fq3j]. I started with Matthew Sangster’s amazing compilation of area maps [https://bityl.co/Fq3j] to narrow down some #Year1819 streets close to her base in #CavendishSquare.

Attached: 1 image "You do like over-researching things, don't you?" said my #sister "Forget all the details, write the book!" I wouldn't admit it to anyone but you: she might have a point. My heroine, Mrs F, has only 5s 6d (~£20 today) & sells off #jewellery to survive. Over the next few days, I'll talk about the (amateur) #research for this tiny off-page point, & prove that, sadly, my sister is right! Here’s a thread on where Mrs F went & why. #amwriting #Year1819 @histodons @bookstodon 1/4
Firstly, #London streets in #Year1819 were unsafe on your own, particularly for women. #Cruikshank illustrates the dangers. There’s the risk of pickpockets & the streets were also uneven, insanitary & insanely busy. Mrs F hasn’t got anyone she can call on to keep her safe. So, no #walking.
Could she hire a hackney coach or the smaller hackney chariot? Yes, but at a cost of an impossible shilling a mile—all her cash. https://bityl.co/Folt So that’s out too.
Mrs F is living just north of #CavendishSquare in London. Which jewellers would she go to?
Google #Regency #jewellers & you’ll get Rundell & Bridge, 32 Ludgate Hill (2.5 miles or ¾ hour walk). (History of the company here - https://bityl.co/Fojr) R&B were the #Royal jewellers, so she’d certainly get a good price there.
BUT below are 3 excellent reasons why she wouldn’t go there.
