The #LevantCrisis began on #ThisDayInHistory in 1945. #Syria & #Lebanon had been seized from #VichyFrance by #FreeFrench & #British action, on condition that France relinquish its colonies. It tried to renege at #WWII's end, and both Syrian nationalists & Britain threatened war.

#WWII The Boeing B-17D "The Swoose" is currently undergoing restoration. The Army Air Corps accepted this aircraft and assigned it to the 19th Bombardment Group at March Field, Calif., in April 1941. In May it participated in the first mass aircraft flight from the mainland US to Hawaii. In September, the aircraft flew from Hawaii to the Philippines in the longest mass flight to date. Within hours of the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941, Ole Betsy flew on the first U.S. combat mission.

May 15, 1941 #WWII NYT Twenty-one flying fortresses of the latest type joined the powerful garrison at Hawaii today after a secret mass flight from California last night. The bombers took off from Hamilton Field, near San Francisco, at 9:29 P. M., Eastern standard time, last night. The last one in the for- mation landed at Hickman Field, on the island of Oahu, at 11:28 A. M.The planes were the latest model fortresses, technically des- ignated as the B-17-D.
