#WritingWonders Day 10: how would my main character’s best friend describe him? Over to you, Greenie …

“What, Wilf? Yeah, he’s all right. A bit quiet. Funny though. If you’ve got people who see the glass as half full and people who see the glass as half empty, he’d probably say he hasn’t even got a glass. He wrote a song for our band at school that sounded like the Wombles theme tune, and sulked when we laughed at it. His other ones were better though. He likes the same music as me, bands that no-one else has ever heard of, so that makes him all right too.”

Quite articulate for a mid teen there, Greenie. Well done.

Who does your main character trust and why, asks the #WritingWonders prompt for day 9.

Parents aside, for Wilf it would be Elsie, his sister. She is eight years older than him, and has moved out of home. However, their bond has always been strong, and it would be to her he would turn first in any challenge. She would know how best to handle the situation with his parents without sending mam into anxious overdrive.

Musically, he trusts his best friend Greenie implicitly. If Greenie says a band is worth a listen, Wilf will listen, and never be disappointed. He also shares Wilf’s dry, deadpan humour. It’s not for nothing they are nicknamed ‘the happy brothers’ by their friends from the girls’ school…

For today’s #WritingWonders question, I have to think about how my main character Wilf deals with stress in my #WIP.

Stressful situations differ in the responses they bring. A bereavement saw him withdraw into his box room with his guitar for comfort. Being stood up led him into a world of paranoia. Having his money stolen saw him dig in his heels and be even more determined to carry out what he has been saving for. Being in a situation that involved possible crimes with potentially murderous outcomes, he gave himself time to think, check he wasn’t making five from two twos and seek advice.

Horses for courses.

Todays #WritingWonders question involves the greatest fear of the antagonist in my #WIP.

There are a couple in ‘How Green Are Your Eyes’. The one closest to Wilf fears him coming between her and his cousins, as they and her brother provide the only stability in her turbulent world.
The other is her father, and his fear is losing control despite the fact that he approaches this fear by acting in a way that diminishes his control.

🎉 I’ve finally finished the first draft of my second teen/YA novel, ‘How Green Are Your Eyes’ 🎉

There’s been times when I’ve wondered if I would get to the end… So many of my fiction projects in the past have been left unfinished. But hooray!

Now to leave it, mull, edit, redraft, and then put out to query and rejection 😂

Meanwhile, with a quiet house (Mrs Nocash at her sister’s, Nocash Jrs both catching Zeds in their beds) I made some good progress with my #WIP, provisionally entitled ‘How Green Are Your Eyes’. There’s a faint chance I might even finish it before the start of the new year…
