How Reading Regularly Improves Your Writing Skills

Regular reading is one of the most effective and accessible ways to strengthen your writing craft. This article explores how reading improves writing skills on a foundational level, explaining the cognitive and creative mechanisms behind the advice most writers receive but rarely fully understand. From developing an instinctive feel for sentence rhythm and structure to building an internal library of language patterns, consistent reading trains the writing brain in ways that formal instruction often cannot. The piece also examines why this practice is particularly valuable for neurodivergent and disabled writers, offering a flexible, self-directed path to skill development that can be adapted to individual needs and preferences.

"Ghostwriting: The Business of Writing for Other Authors" by Rayne Hall and Mariana Sabino.

As a ghostwriter, you write, but someone else – perhaps a celebrity, a bestselling author or a subject authority – gets the credit. For this service, you get paid, often handsomely.

Build demand in your readers' minds so they crave a character's backstory, and then deliver it a drip at a time within the context of a scene. #writingcommunity #writingtip

The MC of the book I just read cusses *all* the time. Now, I don't mind swearies as such, but if your character swears in every other sentence, then you've got nowhere to go when you want to indicate the character is *really* up to high doh. It's called an 'F-bomb' for a reason. Let it off sparingly.
