If you ever get discouraged with local municipalities not building safe, pedestrian-oriented, living streets in your neighbourhood, please remember that residents tearing up pavement late at night to make it so cars have to drive slower is an option.

And was necessary.

Walkable cities should become a pleonasm. #woonerf

My council is going to put in a zebra crossing near my street. I wrote to the m last year about making my whole street a #woonerf which got shut down pretty firmly by the mayor, but now they're going to build a zebra crossing. It's a step in the right direction!

Read my take, and find the links to my suggestion to the mayor and his reply:

(There's other good bike-themed stuff, too, if you click about a bit.)

A step in the right direction

This is an area that has had some attention in recent years, getting a concrete protrusion into the street to give pedestrians a better view of the street for safer crossing. It now looks like it's going to get some more attention with a zebra crossing.

Did you know Victoria has a Woonerf? My latest article looks at the Oaklands Rise woonerf. A wonderful grassroots pedestrian space in the Oaklands neighbourhood.

Have a read and let me know your thoughts on this unique and beautiful space!

Victoria’s Own Woonerf — Sidewalking Victoria

I am not sure how it has taken me so long to write about what is definitely the most amazing pedestrian experience within a block of my house. Between Cook Street and Roseberry is Victoria’s only actively maintained woonerf. But, I am sure that many of you are immediately wondering, what the heck is

One of the most intriguing & misunderstood street design and place-making ideas in the world is the Dutch #Woonerf, or “living street.” When I studied woonerfs while working for the City of Groningen, I learned the key is street design that makes it impossible to drive faster than people can walk.
Inspired by the Dutch "living street", Łódź has translated the "woonerf" from a residential to a commercial context. Privileging pedestrians and calming traffic to 15 km/hr, the name and elements are retained—removing the curb and adding greenery, texture, seating, and lighting. #woonerf #LivingStreets
