Another great game of my childhood is finally running in a decent resolution and at a playable framerate within the Win95 VM. "Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II" was the first shooter I played intensively online through a 33.6K modem. It also had an awesome single player campaign!

for almost thirty years i've thought about the early pre-alpha screenshots of Ultima IX

there is something incredibly charming about the combination of 3/4 perspective, 640x480 res, 256 colour palette, zero alpha blending or mipmapping or filtering, and global lighting.

by the time these screenshots were shown in magazines in 1995, they were already outmoded by advancing 3d standards for lighting and textures.

by 1998, the team would toss the software rendering engine and start over, producing a much softer looking, smoothly textured world.

i think personally that it lost a lot visually in that transition. despite the final game looking more "realistic" and impressive, it lost the handcrafted and friendly, almost shareware, look that the alpha had. this is as close to a wabi-sabi style as 3d rendering ever had.

Alright! I just uploaded my current 86Box v5.0 config and installation of Windows 95 to the Internet Archive. I included both English and German versions, as well as all of the disk images and setup files I used.

It's not a high-end configuration by any measure, running a Pentium MMX 233MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and Matrox Millennium II GPU. There are also no applications or games included. But, maybe it's still helpful to get into Win95 emulation for some.

I finally found a good 86Box hardware configuration and BIOS setting to run Windows 95 without any device manager question marks or resource conflicts straight out of the box using the RTM version 4.00.950.

Tried a few times to install #Win95 on the Libretto today, with moderate success. I need to find a 95(B) image to try, I forgot (C) included all of the Active Desktop crap and it definitely slogs on the 16MB. I also ran into an issue where enabling PCMCIA would somehow stop the PCMCIA floppy drive from working. Oh, and one time it went full blue screen on startup after installing sound drivers. In better news, I won a bid on a "parts only" 70ct on eBay that shows it has the extra memory module, but less than half the cost of the module on its own, so maybe after upgrading to 32MB I can just go to 98SE.

Time to have fun! Windows 95 PLUS! adds some much needed colours to Windows 95. And "3D Pinball - Space Cadet" and "Microsoft Hover!" provide a bit of leisure time. Oh, well... it's something. 😜

I have to do some polishing on yesterday's installation of Windows 95. First things first. I need the basic Y2K updates. A perfect time to make use of that official Y2K update CD I got a few weeks ago. Apparently, this also updates Microsoft Word 95 to version 7.0c. Nice!
