For Release: Commitments and Actions Toward the Future of SIGCHI The recent discussion about CHI’s presence in Hawai’i, and the underlying processes and structures that led us there, have caused this community to re-examine some of the fundamental structures by which we select conference sites, ...

Despite multiple objections at multiple phases, the majority of ACM SIGCHI leadership continue to act in service of hosting the CHI 2024 conference in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Indigenous people of the islands of Hawai'i have long objected to overtourism on the islands, to which conferences such as CHI contribute. The recent Maui fires have displaced thousands and exacerbated water contamination, and now the islands lack the housing and resources to support the daily lives of its most vulnerable. Conference venues and hotels are known to intercept and restrict access to essential resources, depriving local people of their most basic needs. These problems have been ongoing, and will remain well after CHI 2024's scheduled event time.

As Josiah Hester asked, how can you be a good guest when you show up to a burning house uninvited, you take up all the beds, and you use all the water?

Those of us in the Human-Computer Interaction discipline who have signed below collectively affirm a commitment to solidarity with the oppressed and dispossessed - specifically, the people of Maui affected by the fires, and all Kānaka Maoli enduring and fighting occupation, resource theft, and ecological contamination.

I understand that many people feel conflicted, and do not know how they can take action when they feel alone. Therefore, I am organizing a list of dissenters. I have been vocal about my commitments to justice in HCI since I was a student, both online, in person, and in academic writing. The data you submit will not be released to anyone, and connections to other dissenters will not be made without the express permission of all parties. My first intent is to collect data on the numbers of dissenters, and then, if possible, to coordinate action between members of volunteer groups. I am not using Google or Microsoft products to collect or store this data, nor am I using products associated with my institutional affiliation. I release the following post regarding #CHI2024, #whyCHI, and any other academic conference planning to remain in Hawai'i in this or any other year. May this discomfort lead us to new knowledge and renewed action.

Why is CHI in Hawaiʻi

Why is CHI in Hawaiʻi

For those students and early-career faculty who are worried about the loss of networking opportunity caused by refusing to participate in #CHI2024, I will be providing networking and mentorship support for scholars interested in Technology and Disability, broadly construed.

It is my duty to model the behavior I hope to see from my peers so that we can do what is right - Refusing CHI - while continuing to support young marginalized scholars. Those who benefit most from in-person CHI are the same people who are hurt the least by opportunity loss.

Twice a month for a year, I will host 2 mentoring and networking sessions. That's 24 people who will receive focused advice on scholarship, programs, contacts, and resources that will benefit their career goals and project aspirations. I absolutely do not help 24 ppl at CHI.

So if you are worried about networking opportunities without #CHI2024, or you are worried for your students, and your scholarship sits in the nebula of disability, marginality, HCI, design, ethics, policy, and politics, you can sign up here:

Help to Support Maui Fire Relief – CHI 2024

I've already said in January that I won't be submitting to, reviewing for, or attending #CHI2024: https://hci.social/@floe/109658352678581278

Now after the #Maui fires, there's renewed discussion about #whychi - read below for a very thoughtful appeal for not supporting CHI this year.

Florian 'floe' Echtler (@[email protected])

I really need to cut down on my work commitments, and I've reluctantly decided I won't do any volunteer work for #CHI 2024, also because I think it's a bad decision to fly 1000s of people to Hawaii while the climate is crashing and burning all around us. 😬
