This week's Short Stack is live -- a mix of moments, reads, and things I made that stood out before the week slips away. Highlights from this edition:
- Celebrating a life cut short
- Celebrating two lives coming together
- Book clubs and pen clubs
- A YouTube milestone

The Weekly Short Stack for December 12, 2025

Each week, I pull together a Short Stack of the things that stood out – something I made, something I read or watched, an experience that left a small but noticeable impression in the week. Not a grand unifying theme, not a comprehensive recap. Just the bits that felt worth pocketing

So many books, so little time. But still, we’d rather be reading.

Here’s what we read this week. (Not all titles were finished.)

What did you read?

Confronting. Complicated. Compelling.

There’s so much to unpack in #Yellowface by #RFKuang. Plagiarism, racism, cancel culture, online trolls, and completely unlikable characters. And let's not forget its critique of the current state of the publishing industry...

Did I enjoy this book? I'm not sure.

Can I stop thinking about it? No.

Do I admire R.F.Kuang for writing it? Definitely.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think? And if not, do you plan to read it?

With the way that many don't do analog writing these days, a lot of y'all would be branded as evil.

Edward Oscar Heinrich created much of what we consider to be forensic science...and popularized some of the bad (like graphology). 😔

It's interesting that for all the advancements in AI, we aren't that far from the pseudoscience that brought on harsh sentences. Or...given how AI hallucinates at times...

In terms of books I read, it's mostly SF/Fantasy, some detective, some other stuff. In terms of books I listen to, I tend towards memoirs.

Today in Writing History December 15, 1905: The Pushkin House was established in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to preserve the cultural heritage of Alexander Pushkin, (6/6/1799–2/10/1837). Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist of the Romantic era. He was influenced by Enlightenment writers and thinkers, like Diderot and Voltaire. He spoke out in support of social reform, and wrote poems, like “Ode to Liberty,” leading to the government exiling him from the capital. In 1920 the Pushkin House was renamed the Institute of New Russian Literature, with the main objective of preparing authoritative "academic" editions of works by Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and others.

Everything I read in November. A good reading month. I am enjoying working my way through Ruth Rendell and Ngaio Marsh. Bibliomaniac by Robin Ince was funny and resonated with me a lot.
