I've just removed all of my #worldcommunitygrid instances. I have been running #wcg on a number of machines for many years now but, since its migration from IBM, it has become increasingly fragmented and, not to put a finer point on it, thoroughly unreliable. I'm not prepared to continue to support an organisation that takes over 2 weeks to carry out a migration that was planned (if it was planned at all) to take an afternoon. Sad.

For any #BOINC users out there, I'm trying to reinstall it on my desktop. I think my antivirus messed it up. I'm neither able to uninstall or install it properly, getting the same error in both cases. So clearly, I'm missing something somewhere. Anyone have any ideas?

Hmm, I see that the #WorldCommunityGrid website is finally actually reachable again, but completely borked. Still nothing doing on its #BOINC services, either. I guess their very prolonged maintenance outage is overrunning? They sadly really do seem to have #relentless bad luck ever since IBM transferred the project… A real shame as many of its distributed computing projects do practical useful research. #WCGrid #WCG #SNAFU 😢

I've been lamenting the tremendous waste of resources dedicated to cryptomining, but I finally got around to installing BOINC and signed up for tasks from Rosetta@home (protein folding.)

The trailblazing SETI@home project is no longer/currently active, but World Community Grid (ex-IBM), and Science United (NSF/UCB run) offer plenty of opportunities to use CPU/GPU cycles for good.

Now, to keep a lid on my resource usage...
