On my way back from an interesting #WBF2024 with the wonderful #RhätischeBahn through #Graubünden. Now heading towards Lake Constance with #SBB. Let’s see how the connections then in Germany will be with #DeutscheBahn.

Impressive review on #alpine #soil #biodiversity across the globe presented by @m_steinwandter with many colleagues of the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment #GMBA

Don't beat it with your feet. But it seems that Michael is more happy to study sites off the beaten tracks.

This morning at the @worldbioforum 2024 in #Davos --> small excursion day with a team of #SoilBiodiversity researchers @EisenhauerLab, #AlpSoil_Lab, #ScheuLab)

We climbed up the Büelenhorn (2512m) and Büelenberg, a quite lonely mountain ridge above Davos.
A lot of nice biodiversity to see in the #alpine zone! (and sahara sand)

David P. Shrag (Harvard University) says in his plenary sesssion that behavioural changes are unlikely to combat climate change, but we need technological changes. The largest behavioural change we experienced, the Covid-19 pandemic, caused only 5-6% of decrease in CO2 emissions.

Nice informal meeting of #GMBA members at the @worldbioforum 2024 in #Davos, #Switzerland.
There are quite some people working with #MountainBiodiversity globally 🍹🫒

Thanks to Davnah and Mark!

The dutch artist Thijs Biersteker made the point that we scientists do not reach the hearts of the public, because we do not communicate properly, whereas artists address feelings. He turns scientific findings into art and then emotions.

Bringing data to decision making for conservation and biodiversity

Translating conservation and biodiversity research from the field into the real world is a complex problem. This collection discusses issues around economics, policy, and how to do research that answers the questions that decision makers have.

Koen de Koning from Wageningen University presented the very first #DigitalTwin in ecology ever: the Crane Radar. Using real time crane observations from birders plus environmental information and past crane routes, it predicts well the track cranes take during migration.

Bird watcher alert! The crane migration is about to start. With the Crane Radar we’ll show you in real-time where and when you can see them flying.

1000s of birders are using Waarneming.nl to record crane sightings. We built a model in which we combine these observations with the weather forecast, historic data and ecological knowledge. The result is a real-time radar on which you can see the expected routes they will take. Are you on this ro
