In the annotation of pictorial elements on ancient seals, machine-supported systems are useful for detecting recurring shapes and visual patterns. What they don’t provide is context: ambiguity, wear, iconographic convention, or cultural meaning.
Annotation is not a neutral technical step.
It is the moment where interpretation turns into structured data.
That’s why expert control is not optional, but essential.
