🕹️ Archaeogaming isn't all fun & games.

At #CAA2026 in Vienna, Aris Politopoulos & I are co-organizing a session on the promises and problems of play in archaeology.

⚖️ Topics: accessibility, ethics, inclusion, critical storytelling, AI tools, XR platforms & more. Whose past gets played? Who gets to play at all?

🛠️ Exploring the Past Through Innovation
Join us at the HKU InnoWing Carnival 2025 for a special talk on how technology is helping us better understand the ancient world.
🗓️ September 25 | 14:30–15:30
📍 Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing One, HKU
📌 LED Wall & Brainstorming Area
At HKU, archaeology meets engineering in a unique way. Each summer, our team runs a fieldwork project in Armenia, excavating a 3,000-year-old fortress. This work is also a chance for testing new tools — from 3D recording and AR/VR to machine learning and AI.
The talk will highligh t how these technologies are shaping the way we explore the past, and how students can get involved in meaningful, hands-on research experiences.
Whether you're curious about archaeology, passionate about innovation, or simply looking to learn something new, you're warmly invited to join us.
🎙️ Speakers: Prof. Peter Cobb, Ms. Navya Gupta, Ms. Shuya Lu, Mr. Hayk Azizbekyan

Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing One
📌LED牆及Brainstorming Area

Back in December (https://notacult.social/@carbontwelve/113605555389780617) I went looking for a lost #TUI game from 1999.

I'll eventually publish the essay I wrote on this hunt but it's suffice to say it's truely lost to time.

Recently this week I begun upon a similar venture, this time seeking a MMO I played back in 2003-2005 that had 3D graphics and was set in space.

It was very nice to see several people come to my assistance in this chapter of my delve into #DigitalArchaeology

I once again went looking for the lost Smiley ASCII programs from 1999. I got a little closer this time, finding yet another early website of mine that had hosted the files but alas the IA indexer couldn't collect the files because they were behind a cgi-bin hosted script. I'm now digging out old hard drives of mine to find my physical backup of these 25 year old files. It's going to be here somewhere! #DigitalArchaeology
