i'm working on the "agricultural engineering" portion of my industrial ag mega-zine, so i'm deep in the guts of "agricultural marketing", a USDA publication about getting food to market (not the same as today's definition of marketing).
it turns out that USDA had a whole research division just for marketing, where they investigated all kinds of stuff and did R&D that would make the movement of food from farms to markets more efficient. it included research on processing, refrigeration, grading, inspection, sorting, packaging, shipping, and lots more.
i'm overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of things that they were improving. let me tell ya, they didn't have anything like that back in USSR (where my family is from, and where i'm constantly comparing things to as i research).
they also cover things like food stamps, school lunches, and overseas food aid. and it is very weird to see statements like "president nixon is determined to get more food to the neediest americans." i guess nixon was woke according to the standards of today's right wingers. 🙄
