Donald RoyThere was a period - a few months on both sides of #ukgeneralelection2001 - when #newlabour did look as if it was metamorphosing into a recognisable centre-left government - along the lines of those headed by #attlee or #wilson . However the events of 11th September 2001 provided an opportunity for #blairite #ultras to stop this process in its tracks and indeed reverse it to some extent. We have yet to see which part of the story will repeat itself.
There were two really distinctive election wins. In #ukgeneralelection2001 #putney was the only seat to return a #labour #mp while having no #labourcouncillors while in #ukgeneralelection2019 it was the only #conservative seat #labour won. Which meant the #wandsworth #civicsuite - where the count - was held was the only happy place for anyone #labour to be on the night of 12th December 2019. Quite something to have swum against the tide so spectacularly !
